Chapter 6: Close Call

Josh's POV

After talking to Harmony the other day I planned on going out with my dad. He had taken me to a hunters meeting for a few weeks but I had never seen one of the wolves.

We walked silently through the woods. "Josh are you loaded" my father asks and I now. I had silver 450 caliber bullets. They were rather larger around 4 inches long and almost half an inch in diameter. My rifle was slung across my shoulder but facing forward. I knew if we ran into a wolf that I would have to act fast.

We walked for a while until we got to the edge of Emerald Forest pond. I was admiring the beautiful pond when I felt a tap on my shoulder. Looking up my mouth dropped open. I always thought that these wolves were normal size but I was very wrong. These wolves stood almost 5'5 at the shoulder. I froze watching them. There were two in front of us. They were less than fifty meters from us. I pull my rifle around and start to shake slightly. What if I shot and one attacked us. It took a second to reload and I had heard these animal had supernatural speeds.

I shallowed as I hit the safety on the rifle and looked down the barrel at the wolves. My heart was racing, I had shot deer before but this seemed different then deer. I lined up to the larger of the two and pulled the trigger. The gun echoed around the pond. I looked out and saw that I had missed. "Joshua you MISSED" MY dad screamed as we shot his own missing ats well. Both wolves had took off without attacking us which was great. My dad was cursing under his breath as we walked forward.He inspected the ground and then yelled "YES".

I took at him then the ground. There was blood so either we did hit one or both. It wasnt a lot so i was starting to think it was maybe just a graze from the bullet but my dad was happy.

"Joshua you got your first one. If it was a direct hit they will die soon if not qe will be back tomorrow." He said smiling he was acting as if I won the biggest game or election in my life. I sighed hoping that I really didnt harm either of them.

Soon I could hear several growls coming towards our location. "Run son" my dad yelled as he threw a smoke bomb of sorts behind us. He claimed that it was a detour them so they wouldnt follow us. We ran as fast as we could out of the woods, which was a good distant. We were probably about two miles in. Once we arrived at the car my dad sped off quickly. "Why didnt they attack?" I ask and my dad chuckles. "Son they didnt attack because we caught them off guard" he said as we sped down the road. I couldnt help but feel really bad for the two wolves.

Harmonys POV

After the other wolf had circled me a few times we sniffed each other. It nuzzled my neck to follow. I followed the wolf for a little while and we came to a big pond. It was really pretty here. I had never been here before and I planned to come back. I leaned my head down to take a drink of water when I heard the shot. I felt something graze my shoulder and I let out a whimper. It burned almost like I was on fire. I felt the hot liquid drip down my leg. The other wolf pushed me to the side as another shot rang out. The other wolf took off and I followed them. We ran for a few mintues before I couldnt anymore.

Harmony that was silver. You need to shift.

Lola said in my mind. I shifted to my human form and fell onto the ground. I looked for the other wolf but they were gone. I curled up slightly as the pain over came me. The light started to fade as I drifted out of consciousness.

Embers POV

I had been given the opportunity to go for a run by myself and I took it. As I was exploring my old pack territory I came across her. She was a very pretty wolf and I knew by smell that this had to be my daugther. She smelled like chocolate just as she had when she was a baby. I circled her checking out her wolf. She was so pretty and I knew her dad would have loved it. She looked almost just like him. After I nuzzled her a little she followed me to my favorite place, Emerald forest pond. It hadnt changed in all the years I had been locked up. Watching my daugther take a drink of water I heard a shot.

Hunters! My wolf Elsa screamed. I nudged my daugther before taking off as another shot rang out. I could hear her following me. The pack house was a mile and half up the way and I wanted her to come to it. I knew the Alpha wouldnt care because my daugther happened to be his mate.

Since I hadnt joined his pack yet I couldnt mind link him. Then the smell of blood filled my nose. She must have gotten hit by one of those bullets. I raced faster hoping she would follow me to the house before shifting. I heard her go down before we reached the house. I shifted and the alpha met me. "She has been hit alpha. Hunters snuck up on us" I say trying to keep calm.

"Show me" he said racing after me towards where my daugther fell.

Upon finding her she is bleeding out rather heavily. Which is weird because that kind of wound should have started to heal, unless it was silver. Alpha immediately took off his shirt and laid in on her to cover her up. He was going to be great with her, it warmed my heart.

A few medical wolves came and lifted her up onto a stretcher to take her to our hospital. I could hear Alpha growl when they touched her. He was already getting a little possessive of her.

A few days had passed and I woke up in my daugthers room in the hospital. My daugther woke up during the night screaming in pain. The nurse came to sedate her so she could be comfortable.

"Ember why dont you go get some sleep. I would like to sit with her" Alpha said as he entered the room. I got up and walked over kissed her forehead gently before giving a head bow to Alpha. "Thank you so much" I say and he nods to me. We were on good terms and I hoped to stay on them.

Alphas POV

I watched Ember leave and then sat down by my beautiful mate. Her light brown hair was falling over her shoulders. As I touched her hair allowing it to wrap slightly around my fingers. Her face seemed to relax. I kept my hand on her shoulder hoping soon that she would wake up. A nurse came in to examine her and check her vitals. I let out a soft growl while trying to contain myself.

"Alpha can I speak with you" the doctor said as I stood and walked away from her. I didnt even know her name.

"Alpha there are traces of silver in her wounds" he says as my blood boils. "Silver" I managed to grunt through my teeth. "Hunters" I say and the doctor nods. "Once she is awake I think its gonna take several weeks to heal. If she had a mate Mark her then she would heal faster" he commented and I nodded. "I believe she is my mate but she isnt a pack member. She has been living with humans for over 18 years" I say looking thru the glass to her sleeping form. "Do you have a name I can put on her board?" He asked me. I thought for a few minutes then said "Luna". He nodded and put it on her papers.

I went to sit down in her room and dosed off. Ever since I had found her I had been checking her house nightly. I just hoped that those hunters didn't find foot prints around her window.

Joshuas POV

It was about 8:30pm when the phone rang. My mom cursed as she walked over to answer. "Josh have you seen Harmony today" my mom called to me and I shook my head. "I saw her the other day" I say as my mom looked worried. She kept talking on the phone. Once she hung up she looked at me. "Get dressed we are going over to the Johnsons house. Harmony is missing".

My heart skipped a beat hearing that my best friend was missing. I raced around and met my mom in the drive. My dad came staggering around the corner. "Where you going women" he slurred as he grabbed my mom. He wasn't violent, normally, but he was a pretty bad drunk. "Leave her alone we are going over to Harmonys" I say firmly pulling his hands off my mom.

"Boy I didn't ask you" he slurred and tried to throw a punch towards me. I side stepped and threw a punch knocking him to the ground. Mom and I climbed into the car and I sped off before he could yell at us. "Josh you cant be doing that. He will only fight you back" my mom said rubbing her arm. "I'm not gonna let him grab at you mom. You mean more to me then that jerk any day" I said as we pulled into her drive. Two police cars where outside when we pulled up. The one officer stopped us but Mr. Johnson said we could come though. We all gave statements and then the police left. "We will find her. Come morning I will go out and look in the woods. Harmony is very resourceful, I'm sure she will be home in the morning" I say to them hoping to convince myself maybe even more then them.

Alpha POV

'Alpha' my beta linked to me. I stirred and realized I was holding her hand still. She was still out and Ember never came back. I'm assuming she was probably tired from the night before.

'Go ahead Alec' I link back yawning and stretching some.

'Well there are some humans in the forest over by that house you watch' he linked and it dawned on me why.

'Alec, I need you to type up a note.' I say giving him instruction to say that they cant look in the forest due to high bear sighting and other dangerous animals. I looked back at her before touching her cheek. "Beautiful I hope you wake soon. Your family is looking for you but will never be able to find you" I say softly. She began to stir some and I froze. Her eyes opened a little when closed. I could tell she was drifting in and out of consciousness.

Harmonys POV

Black kept coming and going as I attempted to open my eyes. Everytime I opened them I couldnt move like I was paralyzed. Trying to focus on my hand I managed to move my finger slightly. "Where am.....I" I managed to slur. I couldnt focus to talk or move.

"Emerald Forest hospital" a voice said softly as I felt the sparks shoot up my arm from his touch. The deep voice didnt have a face yet as I couldnt move my head to look at him.

Finally after what seemed like an hour or two I finally opened my eyes. I was shocked to see a man sitting next to me. It was the man from the night Josh and I got lost. "Who are you?" I asked softly looking at the gorgeously handsome man. He smirked and looked at me. "My name is Alpha Jayden. Now who are you?" He asked still gently rubbing my arm. I didnt pull it back because the feeling was making my shoulder hurt way less than before. "Harmony Johnson" I said swallowing slightly. I remebered the wolf I followed who left me. I woundered if that was him or not. "Alpha" I say softly letting the words almost tingle on my lips. "Well that's my name" he said with a small chuckle. I laughed but winced causing him to jump up. I flinched as he stood up. I had never been hit but the way he moved startled me. "I won't hurt you" he said softly sitting down next to me.

Lola why am I drawn to him. All I want is to have him hold me. I dont even know him

I say to my wolf but she doesnt respond. A worried look spreads avross my face. "Can I ask you something that might seem crazy" I say gently knowing how Josh had reacted when I had mentioned wolves to him.

"I have this voice in my head. Her name is Lola. I tried to talk to her but she isnt listening or responding to me." I say trying not to hyperventilate. The alpha puts his hand on my good shoulder and I start to calm down. "Would it be weird to ask you to hold me" I say before throwing my hand over my mouth. His face lit up at my second question. "Not really I just want to hold you but I didnt want to scare you" he said as he sat on the bed next to me. My heart started to race some as his arm rapped around me. My head felt dizzy as I took in his smell. Cinnamon and chocolate. My brain seemed to frizz out because all I could focus on was him. Nothing else seemed to matter. I felt like I was on cloud nine and I was enjoying the feeling until a knock brought me back to reality.

Suddenly a women walked in. She stood about 5'8 with medium dark brown hair. She had a curvy build with hazel eyes and full lips. I couldnt place where I had seen her before. Her eyes seemed familiar and so did her scent. "Do I know you" I asked resting my head on the Alphas clothed chest.

"Yes and no" she said with a small sigh. "Can I ask you a question first" she said and her voice was like honey. I nodded looking her over trying to place her. "By any chance where you adopted" she asked and I sat put pushing away from the Alpha slightly. "Yes why do you ask " I say looking at her with a confused expression. "Found by the firehouse just as a storm was rolling in?" She asked and I simply nodded. How could she have known this unless.

"Are you my real mom or sister" I ask feeling tears form in my eyes. Alpha Jayden stood up as this women walked over to me. She put her hands on my cheeks and I started to cry. "Yes" she whispered as she gently pulled me into a hug. I gripped her as tight as my shoulder would allow me too. I couldnt believe I found my birth mom. "Why.." I asked wiping my tears "Why didn't you want me" I whisper while sniffling some. She looked off into the distance "I always wanted you. I never wanted to give you up, but you couldnt stay with me. You would have been killed" she said as she whispered the part about being killed.

"Ember please she will find out the story sooner or later. Preferable later after she has healed" Alpha Jayden said before coming over by me again. The women who he called Ember nodded and moved back.

You could have hear a pin drop and it was making me uncomfortable.

"Alpha can you tell me more about wolves?" I ask looking at him.

"What do you want to know?" He asks as he takes my hand. Those sparks make me loose my train of thought. I just stared into his eyes. It was kind of scaring me, how could I be falling for this man I just met.

"This mate thing" I mumble as he touches my cheek gently. Ember sat in the chair on the opposite side of the bed.

"Well the mate bond is a complex thing to explain" she says and the Alpha nodded.

"Pretty much your mate makes you feel anchored to the ground. They take your breath away, make you heat up and make you feel an immense pull towards them. They are suddenly the only person you want to always be around. The longer they are gone the more your heart seems to ache. You feel sparks at their touch even the slightest touch spends them up your arm and down your spine. The world seems to revolve around them like no one else really matters as much" Ember said with a longing in her eyes. "If you lose them your world seems to end. You go into a deep depression that make you feel like your in a hole. Like nothing will ever be the same. Like your world will never turn again" she said as a single tear cascaded down her cheek.

"But you wont have to worry about the loss. This man he will take care of you. He is strong and really great" she said causing my cheeks to heat up. My face lit up causing me to look away. "Your blush is cute" he comment before kissing the back of my hand. How could I have lived never knowing a man could make me feel this way. It made me want to give him everything and to never leave him. Where have you been my whole life Alpha Jayden.
