Scarlett POV
Carter joined me as we walked back to through the pack house towards the hospital. I was beyond ready to be done with all of this and move forward to uncovering exactly what the goddess indicated. Somehow my pack was special, and I needed to figure that out to fully understand my history or the meaning behind my relation to her.
“We should reach out to the elders about any prophecies. “I mused to Carter.
“I’ve had some looking into it already, but it appears even our fathers had no idea about the motive behind the attacks towards your mother’s pack. Let alone why they seem to be targeting you now. “He responded.
“It’s not right.” I muttered shaking my head in frustration. We had just turned 18, and while we were supposed to eventually take over our roles as Alpha, Gamma and so on, this was not the way it was supposed to happen. It was weird to think that just literally days ago we were essentially carefree young adults.
“I know.” He said agreeing with the unspoken sentiment.
As we approached the door Carter slowly opened the door, knocking as he did so, almost as if Alpha Nolan would even be aware that he had visitors. I remained quiet as I followed him in. Alpha Nolan looked fairly healthy if you ignored the bandages around the external fixture that were aiding in his healing process. It was odd to see such a strong intimidating man in such a weak state. I stepped closer to him feeling almost drawn to his injuries.
“I think I can help. “I spoke softly almost surprising myself with my own words. I was not entirely certain, but I had an instinct to reach out and lay my hand over the fixture on his leg. As I held my hand there, I began to feel flushed and moments later a pale glow seemed to leave my hand and envelope the Alpha’s leg.
Carter’s eyes went wide. “Scar, you’re healing him!?” He exclaimed in complete shock. He stood almost frozen in place as I moved from one injured spot to the other repeating the process of holding my hand just barely over the injured location. I continued this process almost as if I were in some kind of dazed state. Finally, I placed my hands on either side of his forehead. The white glow emitted from my hands again.
“Dr. Grace get in here, quickly!” I heard Carter’s Alpha voice boom from the open hospital room door. My body began to feel heavy, it felt as if I was giving the Alpha my energy. I allowed myself to fall into a sitting position next to him on the bed, all while keeping my hands firmly placed on the sides of his head.
Carter POV
I could not believe what I was seeing. One second, we were both acknowledging how ridiculous and unfair this situation was. Forced to step up to our roles before our time. And the next moment Scarlett is standing before me giving off this soft white glow and apparently healing my father. If I hadn’t been sure previously, I was now. Either Scarlett truly was this gifted wolf, or I had gone off the deep end straight into a pool of lunacy.
I couldn’t help myself as I called out for Dr. Grace. I hadn’t intended to use my alpha voice and command her, but she needed to see this. I couldn’t tear my eyes away from Scarlett as she moved from one injury to another. She seemed weaker as she moved on, apparent even more so as she landed on the bed next to my father.
Dr. Grace appeared beside me a moment later. “Yes Alpha, what can I….” She trailed off when her own eyes fell to Scarlett. Her mouth hanging open in disbelief much as my own.
“Is she?” I asked.
“It would appear she is in fact healing the Alpha, sir. “Dr. Grace said quickly answering my question. She moved forward gazing intently at the many monitors attached to my father a look of pure curiosity graving her face.
“How can this be?” I mused to Evan.
“She is a blessed wolf it would appear. There are rumors. “Evan insisted.
I continued to watch the scene before me as Dr. Grace bounced around checking the fixtures in my father for any sign of improvement. Scarlett continued to look weaker but didn’t move from her stance at his head. I felt frozen in place as I watched. It seemed like I had been standing there for hours before I stepped forward instinctively standing directly behind Scarlett.
“You’re fading, Scar” I said acknowledging the very apparent exhaustion growing on her fast. “You just got out of one of these beds yourself, you need to stop.”
Scarlett pulled her hands from my father and turned to face me with a look of stubborn pride. “I’m fine, Carter. He on the other hand is not. I don’t know how exactly I know this, but his wolf wasn’t healing him fast enough. The swelling was increasing.” She waved towards his head indicating the brain swelling that had them keeping him comatose. She didn’t wait for a response before returning to the position she had been in previously.
I grew up with Scar, I knew without commanding her as her Alpha, there was little I could say to stop her when she was determined to do something. It was a fact about her that I admired. She never seemed to give up on things no matter how tough them seemed.
“Dr. Grace, are there signs of improvement? Is this actually healing him? “I asked.
“I would need to run some more tests, maybe imaging, but it would appear our future Gamma here is correct. His vitals have leveled out to normal ranges, especially in areas that were previously running higher than considered normal. “She spoke with a sense of awe, obviously uncertain of what was happening herself.
I looked to Scarlett again watching her work, mesmerized for just a moment at how focused she was. Our pack took her in, but she was determined to take care of all of us. There was no doubt in my mind. I reached out placing my hand firmly on her shoulder.
“Scar, you need to stop before you wear yourself out too much. You can continue after you’ve eaten and gotten some rest. Please, listen to reason and don’t make me force the issue with an order.” I said firmly.
The soft glow disappeared as she turned to me, blinking heavily, like a child that’s overly tired. “Okay.” She said softly, suddenly leaning back into me as if her body had just given up. She had pushed too far. I wrapped my arms around her supporting her weight for the moment looking to Dr. Grace for guidance.
“Get her to bed, my best guess would be that her gifts are still not controlled and if she pushes them too hard, she’s exhausting herself completely.” Dr. Grace said simply. “We have a lot to learn about Scarlett still.”
Scarlett at this point had closed her eyes and snuggled into my chest breathing rhythmically indicating she was sound asleep. I shifted her in my arms before nodding towards Dr. Grace. “I’ll get her to her room, please check in on her in the morning. We need to be certain she’s okay.” I said realizing all too well that I was stating the obviously.
“I will do so, Alpha. In the meantime, I’m going to have some scans ran on your father. From what I can tell without them is it appears as if the injuries to your father’s limbs are completely healed. I need the scans to know more about what Scarlett has accomplished here. “Dr. Grace nodded offering a slight smile full of pride towards Scarlett. “Get our Gamma to bed.”
I nodded and walked out of the room still utterly confused by what had just happened. She felt really warm again, but now I was convinced her temperature elevated with use of her powers. I couldn’t help being drawn to her. Scarlett was special before we knew of her gifts. She wasn’t like the other girls we grew up with. She was always confident in herself and wasn’t obsessed with the mate bond or a need to impress really anyone. It’s like she had always just been one of the guys, and while she had been adopted into our pack, she really was one of us. I would be lying if I said I hadn’t wished dearly that we would wake up with our wolves and find that we were mates. But that wasn’t what the goddess had planned it seemed.
We’ll find our own mate and she’ll be just as wonderful as Scar. Evan said reassuringly. Our Luna will be everything we’ve ever wanted. Our perfect match. He finished.
“I hope so, Evan, I really do” I answered back as we reached the gamma’s floor.
My mate was out there. And I had the greatest gamma I could ask for in Scarlett. Even before we discovered her gifts. For now, though my focus would need to be on my father and my pack. It was time for me to truly be the Alpha of Shadow Moon.
