Scarlett POV
I had woken up in my bed a little confused as to why Dr. Grace was in there let alone why she was waking me up. I didn’t remember passing out down at the pack hospital. She explained that I had insisted on going further with trying to heal Alpha Nolan and had fallen asleep seconds after agreeing with Carter that I needed to stop. After Dr. Grace gave me a quick once over, she had confirmed her suspicion that overusing my gifts was causing a deep exhaustion in me. It made the most sense to me. The biggest surprise had to be when she told me about the test results on the Alpha. Apparently, I was in fact using my gift to heal his injuries. She told me that while his head injury needed to be monitored that at this point, he was healed enough that they no longer needed to keep him in the coma like state. I couldn’t have been happier to find that out. I had helped. Deva had known all along that we could help. I just wished that stubborn wolf of mine had been clearer with me from the get-go.
I had spent my morning quietly researching in the library. Surrounded by piles of dusty old books in search of some prophecy or legend that might explain further into what exactly I was. Everyone else was doing the same in their own ways. We needed to know more to understand why I was being hunted. As long as someone was after me the pack itself would be at a constant risk. I scanned through the pages of yet another musty smelling book before getting frustrated and standing up to stretch.
“This is useless, Dev, I’m not finding anything!” I growled to my wolf.
“Everything happens in its own time. “She answered eliciting yet another growl from me.
Deciding to give up for the time being I decided to take a break and head to the hospital to check in on Alpha Nolan. I had rested thoroughly and eaten already. Maybe I could try to use my healing again to help him mend quicker. At least then I’d feel useful.
Once I arrived at the hospital, I was surprised to see Alpha Carter, Warren and his mother all standing in the waiting room. “Hey, what’s going on?” I asked nudging Warren slightly.
Warren glanced at me with relief in his eyes. “He’s awake.” He said in barely a whisper.
My eyes shot open widely as I looked over towards Carter who was speaking in rushed whispers with Dr. Grace and his mother.
“How long?” I asked Warren.
“Dr. Grace linked us a few minutes ago to get here at once. From what I’ve overheard it sounds like he’s been in and out a few times this morning.” He nodded over towards Carter and his mom.
“He’s going to be okay?” I asked hopefully.
“I’ve only caught bits, but it sounds that way. I’m trying to be patient so they can get all the information and relay it to me.” He said sounding almost a little hurt. He was an alpha too, it made sense that being excluded from the conversation would bother him. Even if he was younger than his brother. I gave him a half side hug.
“It’s okay to be bothered.” I reassured him nodding in the group’s direction again. “Just know I’m sure they’re just trying to protect you.”
“Yeah.” He said still sounding defeated.
Carter POV
I had been in the middle of a call with the elder’s discussing further research into prophecies when Dr. Grace had mind linked us to come down to the hospital. I had allowed my mother to stand in on the conversation because a mate should be there but had asked Warren to wait on the other side of the room. I needed to know exactly what all of this was about before getting my younger brother’s hopes up.
“So, he’s waking up periodically? Does that mean he’s healed? He’ll be able to leave soon?” I asked Dr. Grace in rushed whispers.
“Essentially, he’s waking on his own. So, it’s safe to assume that soon he’ll be able to stay awake for longer periods of time. After Scarlett healed him all the test results indicated he was in much better condition. However, Alpha Carter, I would advise not getting too excited. We’ve still not seen exactly how much mental damage will be there if any at all.” Dr. Grace explained further.
My mother couldn’t hide the smile on her face. “I’m going to go in with him. Carter, you need to fill your brother in. Alpha or not, this family doesn’t do secrets. Especially not anymore!” She scolded me before pushing passed us to head to my father’s room.
I hung my head for a moment. She was right, I shouldn’t have told him to wait on the outside as if this conversation didn’t pertain to him. I nodded to Dr. Grace indicating she could leave and walked towards my brother, who now stood next to Scarlett with her arm around him. Evan growled for a moment in my head uncomfortable with the scene before him.
“She’s not ours, remember?” I reminded Evan in a scold of my own. “Relax. We’ll find our own mate like you said yourself remember?”
“I know, but you must remember I feel and remember all the same things you have.” He countered scolding me back in turn.
“Let’s just drop it okay. She’s not our mate, no matter how much I had wished for it as a kid. We’re the Alpha now, we need to act like it. She’s probably just comforting him anyway!”
Evan refused a response and simply retreated to the back of my mind. It was hard not to roll my own eyes at my wolf in that instance.
“Warren, he’s waking up periodically. We don’t know for certain if he’ll fully regain consciousness, or if there will be any deficits.” I said summarizing the rough idea of what Dr. Grace had told me.
Warren looked up at me with an annoyed look. “I should have been a part of that, Carter, Alpha or not, I am an heir as much as you are!” He snapped angrily. Scarlett stepped away from him at this point.
“Warren, you’re still only 16, a child by technicality. I was doing my job.” I countered.
“He’s my father too. There was no reason to exclude me, jackass!” He snapped back.
He was right. I had been a jackass. I shrugged reaching my hand out. “You’re right. I’ll remember next time.”
He hesitated and took my hand in his squeezing it before shaking it as if accepting my veiled apology.
“Can we see him?” Warren asked letting the subject drop.
“Yes, but not you Scar, we don’t need you getting any bright ideas just yet. Dr. Grace believes using your gifts too much is what’s causing you to randomly pass out. That is an order.” I added it firmly staring at Scarlett.
Scarlett rolled her eyes at me. “I just came for an update.” She threw her hands in the air. “I’ll stay away, Alpha.” The annoyance was heavy in her tone, but she bowed her head respectfully.
Warren laughed at Scarlett’s annoyance and bounded off down the hall towards my father’s room. I raised an eyebrow looking at her as though I expected her to attempt to defy me.
“Back to my research.” She said simply turning her head up as she walked off towards the library not giving me time to say anything else.
