Jason came back

Chapter 21 Sophie POV My day at the office was well spent, and it's finally time to go home. "Do you mind if I drop you off?" I raise my gaze to find him standing inside my office and staring at me with a questioning expression on his face. "No, don't worry. I will just take a cab home," I quickly turn down his offer, and he slowly nods his head as he stares at me for seconds. "Alright. See you tomorrow then," He utters before he strides out of the office, not sparing me another glance. I just feel like going home by myself today. It has been a while since I last went home alone, and I think I want to give it a try today. I finally round up for the day and leave the office to go home. Strolling on the road and getting fresh air is so much fun, and I reached the bus stop before I know it. As I wait at the bus stop for the bus to arrive, many thoughts flood my mind, which includes Jason. I can't deny that I missed him so much over the years, but Xander is slowly replacing him and taking his place in my heart even without him doing anything. He is naive and doesn't even know anything about relationships, which should maybe make me lose interest, but I find myself loving him more. The loud honk of a car pulls me back to reality, and I raise my gaze to find the bus already pulled over in front of me, with people trooping in hurriedly so they won't miss it. Somehow, I feel like not going home yet, so why don't I just wait for the second bus? Yes, it's crazy, but I just want to stay here and have some fresh air before I go home. My phone suddenly beeps, and I check the screen to see a message from Xander. 'Did you get home early?' I sigh after I read the message, and decide to ignore it for now. I will text him when I get home later. Fifteen minutes after the first bus left, the second and the last one arrived, and I board it. It's fun riding on the bus after a while, and I feel relieved. It took me much more time than usual before we get to the bus stop near my house, where I alight and stroll down to my apartment. I finally arrive at the front of the house after walking for five minutes, and I wonder why Zara is not outside to welcome me as usual. Just when I'm about to head to the entrance door, my phone suddenly starts ringing, and I stop to check who the caller is. Lo and behold, it's my boyfriend, Xander. My heart wavers excitedly at the sight of his name, and I quickly answer the call. "Ba...babe..." He stutters, nervousness resounding in his voice. He seems to still be finding the pet name difficult to get used to, but he will be fine with it as time goes by, and that is what I believe. "Hmm? Did you get home early?" I ask him. "I'm not home yet. I had to attend to something somewhere, and I'm about to go back home now," He replies to me, and I slowly nod my head as I smile sheepishly. "What about you? Are you home now? You didn't reply to my message earlier," He further says, and I sigh silently. "I'm sorry. I just got home now," I reply to him. "Alright. What are you going to have for dinner? Has your friend made something for you yet?" He inquires, and I smile as I blush hard. "I think so. You should go back home early, and don't stay out too late. Text me when you get home," I say to him, and I hear him hum. Silence creep in the other end. "I love you," It's the first time I'm ever going to tell him that since we have been in a relationship. "Are you there?" I ask him when I can't hear anything, and his stuttering voice came on. "Ye...yes. I...I...lo...love you," His voice quivers, and I sigh as I shake my head. I still find him cute even with his naivety. "Let's talk later," I whisper before the call disconnects, and I smile excitedly. "Sophie?" A familiar masculine voice calls my name, and I freeze on the spot as I stare at the screen of my phone. I have heard the voice before, but I don't seem to remember where it's from, or maybe I know who it belongs to, but just deny it, because I don't think he is the one. I finally raise my gaze, and my mouth drops open in shock as the least expected person welcomes me. It's Jason. "Jason?" I whisper as I step back, and gulp down nothing. Is this a dream or am I the one hallucinating? What is he doing here after so many years of leaving me? As we sit by side in the living room later, I feel my heart beating rapidly against my chest as I stare into space. Turns out he was the reason Zara wasn't outside to welcome me earlier. Talking about Zara, she excused us minutes ago and went inside the room. "Uhm... It has been a while. How have you been?" He breaks the awkward silence, and I can only nod my head since I'm too nervous to say anything. I can't feel my voice at the moment "Hmm," I hum, and he sighs briefly. "I don't know what to say. Uhm... I just got back in the afternoon today, and I decided to come to check up on you. I have been here for hours... I wanted to come to your office, but Zara said you wouldn't like it," He explains, and again, I nod my head. "Sophie..." "I am tired after a long day at work, and I need to get some sleep now. We will see some other time, that is if you are not going back soon," I quickly stand up to my feet. This feels so awkward. You weren't expecting me to jump into his arms and hug him like nothing ever happened, yeah? H has been gone for three good years, and all those times, we never for once talked on the phone. "Good night," I say to him hurriedly before I turn and rush off to my room, and I slam the door close behind me as soon as I storm in...
