CHAPTER ONE _The Replacement
The first time Kai stepped into Adrian Vance’s house, he understood two things immediately.
It wasn’t a home.
And it wasn’t meant to feel like one.
Everything about it was precise.
The walls were too clean. The floors too polished. Even the silence felt controlled — like it had been designed to exist exactly as it was, without interruption. Nothing was out of place. Nothing was accidental.
Kai stood just inside the entrance, taking it in.
This wasn’t his world.
It never had been.
“Don’t stand there too long.”
His mother’s voice broke through his thoughts, quiet but firm.
Mara Reyes stepped past him, already moving with familiarity. She had worked here long enough to understand the rhythm of the house — when to speak, when not to, when to disappear into the background.
Kai followed her, slower.
“You’ve been here before,” he said under his breath.
“Not like this,” she replied.
There was something different in her tone.
Something he didn’t fully understand yet.
They stopped in the main hall.
It was bigger than Kai expected — tall ceilings, wide spaces, light spilling in from glass walls that overlooked the city below. Everything was open, but nothing felt inviting.
He crossed his arms slightly, uncomfortable without knowing why.
“You don’t have to do this,” he said quietly.
Mara didn’t look at him immediately.
“I do.”
“You’re sick, not—”
“I’m fine,” she cut in, sharper than usual.
Kai frowned.
She wasn’t fine.
He had seen the way her hands trembled when she thought no one was looking. The way she sat down slower than before. The way her breathing changed after small tasks.
He knew.
She knew.
But she wouldn’t say it out loud.
“You’re not staying here permanently,” she added after a moment, softer now.
“I’m just filling in until I recover.”
Kai studied her.
“…And if you don’t?”
Mara finally looked at him.
There was a brief pause — just long enough to say everything she didn’t want to.
“I will,” she said.
Simple.
Final.
He didn’t argue after that.
Footsteps approached.
Measured. Steady. Unhurried.
Kai noticed them before he saw who they belonged to.
And when he did— everything in the room seemed to shift.
Adrian Vance didn’t look like someone who needed to prove anything.
He walked into the room like it already belonged to him — like every decision, every movement, every breath in that space was something he had already accounted for.
Tall. Composed. Impossibly calm.
His presence wasn’t loud.
It didn’t need to be.
It was the kind that settled quietly… and stayed there.
Mara straightened immediately.
“Mr. Vance.”
Adrian’s gaze moved from her— to Kai.
And stopped.
Kai felt it instantly.
That attention.
Sharp. Observant. Unreadable.
Like he was being measured without a word being said.
He held his ground anyway.
“She’ll be away for a few weeks,” Mara explained. “My son will take my place in the meantime.”
Silence followed.
Not long.
But long enough to matter.
Adrian didn’t look away.
“Your son,” he repeated.
It wasn’t a question.
Kai stepped forward slightly.
“Kai.”
His voice was steady.
More than he expected it to be.
Adrian’s eyes flicked over him once.
Not obvious.
Not rushed.
Just… thorough.
“You’ve done this kind of work before?” he asked.
Kai shook his head.
“No.”
Another pause.
Mara shifted slightly beside him.
“He learns fast.”
Adrian didn’t respond immediately.
Instead, he looked back at Kai.
Longer this time.
There was something in his expression.
Not disapproval.
Not approval either.
Just… interest.
“Then you’ll learn quickly,” he said.
His voice was low.
Controlled.
The kind that didn’t need to be raised to be heard.
Kai nodded once.
“Yeah.”
Silence settled again.
But this time, it felt different.
Because now— Kai understood the second thing.
This house wasn’t just controlled.
It was built around someone who was.
And Adrian Vance was not a man who tolerated mistakes.
Kai exhaled slowly.
He hadn’t planned to stay long.
He hadn’t planned to get involved.
He hadn’t planned anything beyond helping his mother.
But standing there— under that quiet, watchful gaze— he had the feeling… that nothing about this situation was going to stay simple.
