Chapter seven

730 Words
SOUTH DAKOTA, 8:30 AM It was a cool morning, a couple were inside the bedroom. It was a Saturday. "Where should we go for breakfast? Adriel asked, looking straight to his wife's face. Deborah smiled and said, "I have made preparations for breakfast, I will cook pods." "Pods? Cmon, you don't have to stress yourself. We will go to the restaurant for breakfast." "Alright," Deborah said, rising from the bed. Some few minutes later, she returned to the bedroom, only to meet her husband wearing his wrist watch. He had just entered the bedroom a few minutes ago. "What is the time?" "9:58 AM!" Adriel briskly replied and stood up from the bed. He waited for his wife to dress up so that they could go to the restaurant. When Eva got home, she couldn't find anyone. She left home very early in the morning only to return and find the house empty. She moved in the direction of the left and picked up the earrings on the floor. "Mum, must have misplaced this. I will ensure that she pays me before I give them to her," she muttered and left for her room. She took a nap. Mr. And Mrs. Adriel had just returned from the restaurant. They were both dressed in red as if they were celebrating an American festival. Mrs. Adriel hurried to Eva's room to check if she had returned. She returned back to the sitting room. "She is there," she notified her husband and sat down. "Only God knows where she had gone. She would have to explain herself when she wakes up," Mr. Adriel said with ego. Eva stood from the bed and wore her blue slippers. She got them three days ago from the market. She exited the room. "Good morning, dad. Good morning, mum." "Good morning, my beautiful daughter," Mrs. Deborah said, looking at her daughter's intuition. "And where are you coming from? Why did you leave the house earlier than us?" "You are too strict a gentleman. Please take it gently with her," Mrs. Deborah cut in. "Deborah, you have to stay out of this. This 24th generation of children needs a strict hand. "Strict hand. Remember this is South Dakota, not Nigeria. We need to take things easily with our children before we do what could take us to detention." "Detention you say?" Eva stood for a while, looking at her parents banter like elementary school pupils. Could the banter turn into a fight? She knew her father to be a Nigerian who doesn't tolerate nonsense. She often called his dad a Nigerian principal. Recently, she learned that the Nigerian principal doesn't tolerate nonsense from any students. "Enough of all these, dad. I went to visit my friend," Eva said, sitting down. She was as outspoken as ever. She was a witty young lady and every man's dream. "A friend, who?" Mr. Adriel said. "No worry, dad." "You better tell me before I pounce on you." "You won't do such. I will personally tell the police about your shenanigans." "Are you referring to me?" "Yes of course." As a university lecturer, Mr. Adriel would not watch any students insult him and go scot free. He had wanted to handle Eva like his students in school, but Mrs. Deborah wouldn't allow him. "I am out of this nonsense," Mr. Adriel said and stormed out of the sitting room. He would have let heaven fall, but his arms fell because he didn't want to have a police case. "Where were you earlier today?" Mrs. Deborah said with seriousness. "Mum, you are frowning, it doesn't even fit your beautiful face. Alright, alright. I went to visit him." "Rowan?" "Yeah," Eva said with a nod. "That American monkey. What do you see in that commoner? You better wake up and don't let any man sweetcoat you." "I love him, mum. I want to marry him." Mrs. Deborah looked at her daughter with surprise. She knew she gave birth to a disciplined child, but she didn't like that decision. "We won't close our eyes and let you marry a poor man. You will marry barrister Chris." "Then he will marry my dead body," Eva said and stormed out of the sitting room. "It's a blind love, but it will never come to reality. That thing has bewitched my daughter," these were Mrs. Deborah's last words.
