Chapter 1
“Serena! Wake up!” mom yells from down the stairs.
It’s 7:00 in the morning. Ugh, GREAT I’m going to be late for school, if I don’t hurry up. I rush to jump in the shower, brush my teeth, and get dressed. As I make my way downstairs, my older brother, Alex, and my younger sister, Jasmin, are impatiently waiting on me. It’s Friday which means tomorrow there’s no waking up early. YES!
As Alex and Jasmin rush me out the door, grab a banana off the table. Hopefully this will hold me off until lunch time.
We jump in Alex’s 2024 Toyota Tacoma. Alex will drop Jasmin and me off at school on his way to the packhouse. See, Alex graduated two years ago and has been training to be the next beta. Next month, the day after the homecoming dance and my birthday-which are on the same day, he leaves for a year to go to full beta training with Xavier, the Alpha’s son. Xavier is the next in line to be alpha of our pack. After they will take over as Alpha and Beta of the Moonstone pack.
My parents are the current beta couple. My dad, Beta Mark oversees security of the pack. He is like the right-hand man to the Alpha, Alpha Samuel. My mother, Jacqueline, is the beta female, and she helps the Luna with all the parties and running of the pack house. My mom and Luna Mary are best friends. My mom also likes to help at the daycare on pack lands on her free time.
We have our own house away from the packhouse. My parents wanted to raise us under their own home, so we have a house about two streets down from the pack house. Our school is about a street up, that is why Alex is bringing us with him.
Finally, we reach school. Once Alex parks, Jasmin jumps out and runs to her friends. Jasmin is about nine months younger than me. Werewolf pregnancies last 6months. So, it makes sense as to why we are so close in age. Due to Jasmin’s birthday, she is a junior. I get out of the car after thanking Alex and saying goodbye. As I walk into school, I meet up with my two best friends, Jayda the alpha’s youngest daughter, and Marlena, the gamma’s daughter. We have known each other our whole lives and have been thick as thieves growing up. We know everything about each other.
Ugh Moonstone High School. Named after our pack because it sits on pack grounds. All of the teenagers in our pack go here. So, everyone knowns everyone!
“Good morning!” Jayda says loudly as I walk towards them.
“Do you have to be so loud? It is still REALLY early!” I groan out to her. Jayda just chuckles.
Marlena comments “Well not all of us stay up all night like you Serena.”
“And not all of us wake up before the sun comes up like you Marlena.” I smirk to her.
Jayda looks just like her mother. She has long blonde hair that is currently styled in big beach wave curls. Her eyes are an almond shaped that are a rich forest green that shine against her soft porcelain skin. She is about 5’ 8” and has a slender build. All the guys at are school are infatuated with her. Marlena has long curly auburn hair, that she keeps tight in a pony tail most days. She trains a lot with her dad. Marlena is about 5’ 9” with a muscular build, with brown honey looking eyes. Her sun kissed skin makes her eyes pop when the sun hits it just right.
Me on the other hand. I look nothing like my family. I am the shortest female in our grade. I have long straight black hair that runs past my waistline. I am curvy in all the right places with a bubble butt. My eyes are what makes me look the most different then everyone. They are almost a snow-white color that shines silver in the moonlight and my skin is pale with no hope of tanning. I should know, I have tried tanning and burned like a lobster.
“Earth to Serena!” Jayda yells at me while waving her hand in front of my face.
“Ummm…yeah what’s up?” I replied trying to sound confident.
“I was asking if you wanted to go to the mall this weekend to pick out dresses for homecoming next month?” Jayda says.
Next month before Alex and Xavier leave for training our pack is throwing the homecoming dance. It usually is just for the high school seniors, but since this year the next alpha and beta are leaving for training, the alpha decided to combine it as a going away party for the boys.
“What time because you know I am NOT a morning person” I reply. I prefer the nighttime, and everyone knows this.
Marlena chuckles saying “You remember last you asked her to go shopping? We waited two hours just for her to get up! And we still didn’t get to the mall until 4pm.”
“This beauty doesn’t just happen on its own you know! I need lots of rest to make it all come together!” I reply.
We all begin laughing, just as Luke, Marlena’s twin brother walks over to us. Luke is in line to be the next gamma like their father. As gamma he will be in charge of warrior training. After graduation, Luke will join Alex and Xavier in training since he is two years younger than them.
“What are you guys laughing at?” he asks as we all make our way to first period.
“Oh, just how much Serena sleeps!” Marlena exaggerates while giggling.
“Oh well that is true! I remember when I stayed over when we were little. Me and Alex would always take bets on how long it would take them to wake her up.” Luke chuckles, while joining in on picking on me.
“Haha you are all just regular clowns” I say fake pouting.
“So, are we going?” Jayda asks again, more seriously this time.
“Yeah, pick me up at 2pm.” I respond quickly as the teacher walks in.
Here we go with the school day. UGH! I much rather be back in my bed sleeping. It is still way to early for all this.
“Me too.” My wolf Luna says.
“At least you get to go back to sleep, while I listen to this teacher discuss theme of poetry.” I sigh back to Luna.
My friends and I are all 17 and seniors in high school, well except Jayda. She is 16 but is super smart so she got to skip a year. Now we are all in the same grade level and get to graduate this year together. This will be our last homecoming. Fortunately for me my 18th birthday is the same day as the homecoming this year. After I turn 18, I will shift for the first time and hopefully meet my mate. I am excited to meet my mate. I have dreamt of it all my life. Your mate is supposed to be the other half of your soul. Your mate is supposed to compliment you in every way and make you the happiest person alive. My parents are fated mates and I can always see the love in their eyes when they look at each other. I want a love like what my parents have.
Though I am unsure he will accept me due the way I am different than everyone else. Pack members tease me because of my eyes and skin color. When I was younger, students use to call me ghost and tell me that I do not belong here because of how different I am. Though my friends always stuck up for me, I knew they were right. I do not belong, and I am different then everyone else. I can feel how different me, and Luna are.
“Mate will accept us! We are prefect!” Luna says.
“I just don’t believe that. We are so different from everyone else.” I tell her the truth. I know that she doesn’t want to hear it, but we are different. I can feel it. Luna retreats in the back of mind and returns to her daily nap.
Finally, the bell rings and we all get up to leave to the next class. After saying our goodbyes, I head to history class. I will meet them at lunch later.
