EPISODE 1: Alaura (a-lore-uh)
Alaura’s POV
Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep.
I groaned and rolled over on my twin-sized bed and slammed my hand down on the blaring alarm clock on the nightstand beside me that was currently my number one enemy right now.
I felt like I had just closed my eyes, but I could tell from the sunlight peeking through my blinds that it was definitely time for me to get my ass up.
I glanced at my refurbished iPhone8 and shrieked as I noticed what time it was.
8:23am. My biology class starts in less than an hour.
“Damnit! I’m about to be late, again!” I yelped as I jumped out of bed and ran into my bathroom to give myself a quick shower while I tried to multitask and brush my teeth at the same time.
Hey, I was trying to be efficient here. So don’t judge me.
I quickly jumped out of the shower and threw on a pair of jeans that still looked and smelled clean, a black sweater that I got from Ross and a pair of sneakers that I bought from Wal-Mart last month.
I put my hair in a high ponytail and dabbed some lip-gloss on my full lips. Thankfully, my skin is acne free and looks decent enough that I don’t have to try and put on any makeup, especially on days like this.
I hurriedly grabbed my backpack, a banana from the kitchen and jetted out of the door as fast as my legs could take me without me falling on my face from tripping over myself.
I locked my door and looked around me to make sure no one was around me to see me leave. I didn’t have much, but in this neighborhood, people were known to steal from any and everyone that they felt had something that could be of any use to them.
I live in a very small studio apartment in a very rough neighborhood that allows me to hear sirens from police cars and ambulances almost every night of the week.
I jumped into my mom’s old Toyota, which still ran pretty well for it to be almost 11 years old, and drove as quickly as I could to my college campus.
As soon as I arrived and parked in the school’s parking lot, I made a dash for the classroom and managed to get to the door with, literally, seconds to spare.
I opened the door quickly but quietly, so that I didn’t disturb anyone and so that I wouldn’t bring any unnecessary attention to myself.
“Ahhh, Ms. Wright, you remembered to grace us with your presence almost on time today, I see.” Professor Asshole…I mean, Professor Norwood exclaimed loudly when she saw me enter.
I sighed, gave her a polite smile and nodded.
“Take your seat, so that I may begin my class. Some people actually would like to learn something today.” She continued.
Bitch!
I slightly rolled my eyes as I made my way to the back of the classroom, where my study partner, Ashton, was sitting.
He looked at me with a smirk on his face and shook his head.
“You know, you truly have a gift for pissing her off early in the morning.” He whispered so that only I could hear him.
“It wasn’t my fault this time.” I whispered back as I sat in the seat next to him. “I actually got here on time today.”
He scoffed and raised his eyebrows. “Barely.”
“And yet, I still did.” I countered back.
“Excuse us, Ms. Wright. Is our class interrupting your conversation?” Professor Norwood asked with a hint of anger in her voice.
I instantly looked up at her and shook my head quickly. “No , ma’am. I was just asking what page we were on.” I lied.
“If you actually look at the board, you’d know the answer to that. Don’t interrupt my class again, or you will be asked to leave, permanently.” She said with clear venom in every word.
It is safe to say that I am not this lady’s favorite by a long shot.
“Yes, ma’am. I understand,” I said in defeat.
I could see Ashton shaking his head with a smirk still plastered on his face in my peripheral view.
I decided not to say anything more and tried to pay attention the best that I could to her boring ass lecturing on mitosis.
I was adamantly engrossed in taking notes when I heard the classroom door open quickly, followed by the clacking of heels.
I wasn’t interested enough to even look up at our visitor because I’m sure that it had nothing to do with me.
“Ms. Wright!” Professor Norwood called out. “You are needed at the bursar’s office, right now.”
Bursar’s office? The f**k for?
I nodded and gathered all of my things before turning to Ashton, who was looking at me with concern, with a shrug.
I followed the tall brunette with the kitten heels to the bursar’s office and waited in the sitting area until my name was called.
I know my scholarship was paid this semester, so I couldn’t understand why they were calling me down here from class.
“Alaura Wright?” The receptionist called out to me as if she had no idea who Alaura was, even though I was literally the only one in here at the moment.
I fought the urge to roll my eyes and stood up.
“I’m right here.” I said sweetly.
She looked me over and I could have sworn she was looking at me with a bit of disgust. I had never seen this b***h a day in my life, so I assumed that I was wrong, she just may be one of those women with a resting b***h face plastered on her pretty tanned face.
“Mrs. Towers will see you now. Last door on the left.” She said dismissively.
Well damn. I thought you had to be hospitable to be a receptionist, but I guess not.
