“So, he didn’t think I could protect you?” Everly asked as she swirled her straw around in her drink.
“I didn’t say that,” I said.
“But he was thinking it! I’m going to kick his ass, just like I did when he was younger,” she growled.
I took a sip of my own alcohol-free drink before reaching out and touching her arm. “Easy now! He did let me go, after all, so he must think you can protect me.”
“He let you go, reluctantly!”
“So? He did let me go in the end,” I said.
“Yeah, yeah.” She waved her hand in the air, amusing me. Yet as we fell into silence, with Everly glancing around the bar, I couldn’t help but watch her. There was something about her—like she’d lost a bit of her spark—and it made me wonder.
“What?” she asked, her eyes meeting mine again.
