Chapter Five: Descent into Chaos
21st August 2020
9:00 am (CLASS A)
The warm sunlight streaming through the windows highlighted the dust particles dancing in the air. The scent of freshly brewed coffee wafted from the cafeteria, mingling with the sound of murmuring students.
"Good morning, class," Mr. Tim, their geography teacher, greeted, his voice booming through the room.
"Good morning, Mr. Tim," the class chorused, their voices echoing off the walls.
Mr. Tim's expression turned somber. "I'm glad to see you all today, and I'm here to plead with all of you: if maybe by coincidence, you see or know the whereabouts of Lucas Brown, please notify the school authorities or any lecturer."
Stella, a short, fair girl, asked curiously, "What happened to Lucas?"
Mr. Tim's eyes clouded. "I don't know, but his parents have filed a complaint towards our school, claiming he didn't return home last week and is nowhere to be found."
The class erupted into whispers and discussions. Concern etched on their faces.
After the lecture, Jane and her friends gathered at the cafeteria, discussing the missing student.
"Did you guys not remember that I made mention of his absence some time ago? I knew something was definitely off back then," Beauty said, her brow furrowed.
"I know, and I'm also thinking that there's something strange going on," Jane said, her voice laced with unease. She recounted the strange person she used to see lurking around their school.
"Jane, what are you even saying? How can a strange person be in our school? The school security system is very tight," Kate said, skepticism etched on her face.
"Then perhaps the person is in our school," Jane countered.
"But Jane, this is not a fictional world. All these ghosts, spirits, masked persons don't exist... I think you're hallucinating things," Beauty said, rolling her eyes.
Jane's face reddened. "I'm not hallucinating! Just check this out: Julia went missing after the competition, and Lucas went missing after Beauty's rebuke... I think it's not an ordinary occurrence."
Beauty scoffed. "So what are you saying? A ghost came and spirited them away? That's what you're saying?"
Jane stood up, anger flashing in her eyes. "It's fine if you don't have common sense to figure out what's going on, but that doesn't mean you can open your mouth to say what I'm reading is rubbish... I thought friends were there to support each other, to understand each other, but I can see none of it here, so please excuse me."
Jane stormed off, leaving her friends dumbfounded.
"What's up with her?" Kate asked.
"Not sure... she's just overreacting. Let's give her some time; maybe she'll calm down," Beauty suggested.
Meanwhile, Jane sat alone at another table, her mind racing. Two girls, Cherish and Thelma, approached her.
"Hi Jane, can we sit with you?" Cherish asked, smiling.
"Sure," Jane replied, sighing.
"You seemed moody; what's going on?" Thelma asked.
Jane explained her observations, and Cherish's eyes widened. "So you mean that there's someone who wears a mask in our school?"
"Yes," Jane replied.
Thelma's voice dropped to a whisper. "And the person might know what happened to Lucas and Julia?"
Jane nodded.
Cherish's face turned serious. "That's really serious. So what are we going to do? Should we tell our vice principal about it?"
Jane hesitated. "I don't know... but wait a minute, during the quiz competition, did you guys notice anything?"
Thelma's eyes sparkled. "Apart from Julia storming out angrily?"
Cherish added, "Or the vice principal leaving suddenly?"
Jane's eyes locked onto Cherish. "Wait, what?"
"I saw the vice principal leaving just shortly after you were announced as the winner," Cherish said.
"To where?" Thelma asked.
"I don't know... I just thought he had an emergency call," Cherish replied.
Their conversation was interrupted by screams from outside. The three girls rushed out to investigate.
On the field, they found a body lying face down.
"Is that not our classmate?" someone whispered.
Jane approached cautiously, her heart racing.
"Hey... wake up," she called, kicking the person softly.
No response.
"This isn't funny... get your lazy ass up right now, or I'll spank you real hard," Jane yelled, kicking again.
Still no response.
Jane squatted and turned the person's body toward her.
Jane screamed loudly and shifted backward in fear. "What is it... what do you..." Beauty didn't complete her sentence as she screamed loudly the moment she looked at the bloody eyeless body with his chest wide open, revealing a missing heart.
Beauty fainted briefly while the other students screamed and ran in different directions. They rushed to their class to grab their bags and, in a panic, discovered that the main door was locked.
"What's happening?" Ashley from Class B asked, frightened.
"I don't know, but I know something is wrong somewhere," Jane said, her voice trembling.
Panic set in as students realized they were trapped. The school's usual calm atmosphere had descended into chaos.
"Find another way out!" someone shouted.
The students rushed to the emergency exits, but they were also locked.
"This can't be happening!" Kate exclaimed.
Jane's eyes locked onto the lifeless body. "It's Lucas... oh God."
The reality of the situation sunk in. Lucas was dead, and they were trapped.
Suddenly, the school's intercom crackled to life.
"Attention students and faculty," the voice said, distorted and eerie. "You are in lockdown. Do not attempt to leave the premises."
The voice paused, and an unsettling silence followed.
"Welcome to your worst nightmare."
The intercom fell silent.
Jane's heart sank. What was happening? Who was behind this?
The students' screams and cries filled the air as they realized they were trapped in a desperate fight for survival.
As the intercom fell silent, the school descended into chaos. Students screamed and cried, desperate to escape. Jane's mind raced. Who was behind this? Why were they locked down?
"Find another way out!" someone shouted.
The students rushed to the windows, but they were sealed shut.
"We're trapped," Kate whispered, tears streaming down her face.
Jane's eyes locked onto the lifeless body. "We need to get out of here, now."
Cherish and Thelma nodded, determination etched on their faces.
Together, they joined the frantic search for an exit. The school, once a sanctuary, had become a prison.
As they navigated the chaotic hallways, Jane spotted a ventilation shaft.
"Here!" she shouted, pointing.
The group rushed toward the shaft, desperate to escape.
But as they reached the vent, a voice echoed through the hallways.
"You'll never leave this place alive."
The voice seemed to come from all directions, surrounding them.
Jane's heart sank. They were running out of time.
With newfound determination, Jane climbed into the vent, followed by Cherish and Thelma.
As they crawled through the narrow space, the voice continued to taunt them.
"You'll never escape."
But Jane refused to give up. She pushed forward, fueled by adrenaline.
Suddenly, the vent dropped into darkness.
Jane's stomach plummeted as they fell.
Time seemed to slow.
They landed hard on the floor, dazed.
As they struggled to stand, Jane saw a glimmer of light.
A door.
"Come on!" Jane shouted.
The group sprinted toward the door, freedom within reach.
But as they burst through the door, they were met with an eerie sight:
The school's parking lot, empty and deserted.
The students exchanged fearful glances.
Where were they?
And what lay ahead?
How will they survive this bizarre happenings?
