Chapter 1
It was the perfect spot for someone who didn't want to be found, so they could stay hidden there. A destination that should be on the bucket list of any person who is passionate about marine life.
Stella Julian abhorred being in close proximity to the water.
When she got to the top of the hill, she stopped the car and turned off the headlights. After that, she continued down the road. She felt as though a heavy blanket had been placed around her, and the darkness was suffocating her in exactly the same way. She was used to the city, with its glittering skyline and the dazzle of lights that turned night into day. She had become accustomed to the city. She was able to readjust really easily. On this desolate island off the coast of Georgia, the only visible objects in the night sky were the moon and the stars. There are no people in the area, no automobile horns can be heard, and there are no towering structures in the vicinity. There was nothing there but the smell of the ocean, the sound of seagulls, and rocks that had been beaten down by the seas.
She would have administered a medicine to herself while they were on the very brief ferry passage if it weren't for the child who was secured in the car seat that was located in the backseat of the vehicle.
The young girl's eyes were still closed, her head was turned to the side, and her arms were tightly wrapped around a worn-out teddy bear. She appeared to be in a deep sleep. It seemed as though she was experiencing sleep paralysis at the time. Before continuing, Stella slipped away from the conversation to open the car door and get her phone.
Please, I beseech you, do not open your eyes.
Before calling the number, she went a little distance away from the vehicle to give herself more privacy. The call was sent over to the voice mail operator for processing.
“Sophie? I'm sending you positive vibes in the hopes that your trip in Turkey is going swimmingly. I just wanted to let you know that I arrived at my destination without any problems. A heartfelt thank you goes out to you for giving me permission to use the cottage. I'm actually quite... I'm—" Grateful. That was the correct definition of the word that she was looking for. Grateful. She took a long, slow breath in, and then closed her eyes as she tried to calm her anxiety. "I'm panicking. The devil is aware of the reasons for why I continue to be here. Water is one of my least favorite things, but there doesn't appear to be any way to escape it. While she was speaking, she cast a quick glance over at the kid who was sound sleeping and lowered her voice "This is—Well, it's difficult to say. While we were riding the ferry, she attempted to exit the vehicle, but I wouldn't let her because there was no way that I was going to get out of the vehicle myself. It was required of me to keep her buckled in." Also, that scary harbor guy with the big eyebrows probably thinks I'm crazy, so when you go home, you should probably act as if you don't know me and pretend like you don't recognize me. It's probably best if you don't act like you recognize me. Because there is no other choice, I will have to hold off till tomorrow, but as soon as the next ferry becomes available, I will board it and head out. I am travelling to a different location. Somewhere landlocked like...Wyoming or Nebraska."
The wind brushed her hair as she hung up the phone, and she could smell the sea and discern a hint of its brine in the air around her.
It was the second time she tried to call, but this time she dialed a new number. She felt a flood of relief wash over her as soon as the phone was answered and she heard Luna's trembling voice on the other end of the line.
"Luna Tempest."
“Luna? It's me."
"Stella ? What, exactly, is taking place at this location? This is not the telephone number that you provided.
"I have upgraded to a more recent model of my cell phone."
"Are you worried that someone may overhear the conversation or listen in on the call? Holy crow, we are in the midst of a very exciting time right now.
"It does not offer any exciting experiences. This is a nightmare of a predicament."
"How are things going for you at this very moment?
"Feeling as though I have to throw up yet am aware that I won't be able to. My stomach is completely knotted up, and the only thing that can be found there is a tight knot induced by anxious strain.
Have anybody from the media been successful in locating you?
”
"I don't believe that to be the case at all. I paid with cash for everything and drove all the way from London to be here." She spun around to take another look at the path, but all she could see was pitch blackness. "How individuals can spend their lives like this is beyond my comprehension. I feel like a criminal. I've never hidden from anyone in my life before."
"Have you been attempting to throw them off by driving different cars? Have you also lately acquired a new bottle of purple hair dye and a new pair of eyeglasses?
“No. Have you been drinking? "
"I spend a significant amount of time in movie theaters. There is no one who deserves your confidence in this world. You need a disguise. Something that will make it simpler for others to accept you as you are."
"In any location that has a shoreline, it will be impossible for me to blend into the scenery and become unnoticeable. If you need to find me, I'll be the one wearing a life jacket in the middle of Main Street. You can find me over there.
Sophie gave her close friend the assurance that everything was going to be all right, but it was obvious from the way that she said it that she wasn't really sure of what she was saying.
You stated, "I'll be gone first thing in the morning," and that's exactly what happened.
"There is no way that could work!" We were all of the same mind in thinking that the cottage would be the most effective spot to seek shelter. You are not likely to draw anyone's notice on an island that is so crowded with tourists due to the sheer number of people there. It's the kind of vacation destination you'd expect to see in a movie, yet it actually exists.
Someone else's words were, "It's not a dream place when the sight of water makes you start hyperventilating," and they were spoken by the individual.
"You are not going to act in that manner at any point. You are going to relax while breathing in the ocean air and taking in the sights and sounds of the seaside.
"It is not appropriate for me to be in this structure. An excessive response is present in every aspect of this predicament. No one is keeping an eye out for me at this time."
"The child of one of the most famous movie actresses in Hollywood, who also happens to be your half sister, has been entrusted to your care, and you are the legal guardian of that child. If even just that one piece of information were to become public, the entire press corps would come seeking for you. You are going to need somewhere to hide, and Kiribati Island is the perfect site for that kind of thing."
Stella was gripped with a shivering panic, and she was shaking violently as a result. "What could they possible know about me that they don't already know? Anna spent her entire life behaving as though I did not exist, which turned out to be the most successful strategy for her given the circumstances. When Anna turned on the spotlight, she had never in her life had any desire to be the focus of attention, so she was completely unprepared for it. Stella kept her personal life very secretive and under wraps. On the other hand, Anna had, from the moment she was born until this very day, been seeking attention from her parents.
Stella had the thought that her half-sister, who had died in a plane crash along with the man who was rumored to be her lover, would have taken some satisfaction in the fact that she was still the subject of news stories even though it had been more than a month since the accident. Stella had the thought that her half-sister would have taken some satisfaction in the fact that she was still the subject of news stories.
"Reporters have the ability to dig up any kind of information. The premise of a decent movie could be something like this.
"It's not like that at all!" This is how I choose to live my life. Before finally pronouncing the words out for the very first time, Emily took a moment to stop. She continued speaking after the statement was abruptly cut short by saying, "I don't want it ripped open and exposed for the world to see and I don't." She reflected on the idea and concluded that she did not want to be responsible for a child. It was as if smoke were emerging from behind a closed door when memories from her past started to seep out of the shadowy crevices in her mind. "There is no way that could happen."
It wasn't proper or fair to do that to the girl.
And it wasn't proper to treat her that way.
Why did Anna treat her in this manner? Was there ill will? Is there a lack of thought? Some twisted need to extract revenge for a childhood during which they had shared nothing except their home space with one another?
"I am aware of what you think, and I can recognize the reasoning that behind it; despite this, you are able to do what you set out to do. You are compelled to do so. At this point, she has no other choice except to go with you.
The speaker added, "I shouldn't be all that anyone has" (all that anyone has should not be me). That is not even remotely fair. Even for a short period of time like five minutes, it would be inappropriate for me to watch over a youngster; let alone for an entire summer.
Despite the fact that in her past life everyone deferred to her, recognized her competence, and valued her judgment, she was unable to handle the circumstance that she found herself in now. She did not have any qualifications that would have made her appropriate for the post that was being offered to her. Throughout her childhood, she had always focused on doing whatever it took to stay alive. about how she had to teach herself how to care for herself and defend herself while living with a mother who was mostly absent — sometimes physically, but always emotionally — throughout her childhood. She spoke about how she had to teach herself how to care for herself and defend herself while living with a mother who was absent. And after she had moved away from her family, her life had consisted of studying and working for long, arduous hours in order to silence men who were determined to prove that she was inferior to them. She did this so that she could silence men who were determined to prove that she was inferior to them.
And now, here she was, thrust into a life in which all she had learnt to that point counted for nothing more than a waste of time. A manner of life that required a particular set of skills, which she was well aware she did not have, and which she was unable to perform. She was completely clueless on how to act in such a manner. She had no idea how to go with completing this assignment at all. And the thought of pursuing it had never even occurred to her in the first place. It didn't seem fair that she should now be in a situation that she had spent her entire life trying to steer clear of and doing everything she could to avoid.
Her forehead started to perspire, and despite the mist of fear that engulfed her, she was able to make out what Sophie was saying despite hearing it.
"If you can get past the idea that the fact that you now have her in your life means that this is going to turn out to be the best thing that has ever happened to you, you will be much better off. Stella, the events that occurred when you were a youngster are not your fault in any way, and you should not take responsibility for them.
"I don't want to go into any greater detail about it."
"You are not to responsible for what took place, and this does not change the fact that it was not your fault. And there's no need in talking about it since the decisions you've made about how to conduct your life already provide sufficient proof of how you feel about it.
Stella gave the toddler who was dozing off in the automobile a fleeting look as she cast a brief peek in that direction. "I am unable to meet her requirements in any way. Unfortunately, I am unable to fulfill her requirements in any way.
I then questioned, "So you're saying that you don't want to be?"
"The transition into adulthood has been the primary focus of my existence. I work a full sixteen hours a day, and my lunch is spent conducting business meetings with various clients.
"I am sorry that this happened to you. I have been keeping you up to date on this information for a significant amount of time now.
"I liked my life! I require that you bring it back to me."
You were living with a man who had the emotional compass of a rock, yet you continued to function like a machine? That's how you spent your life?
”
