Mira’s pov
Thrilled about how gossip spreads in this hospital. She hadn’t been here even a month and she was famous. Even women are drooling over her wishing she was a man. I could even see a few who were flirting with her even if they knew she was not a man, most especially Nurse Pat. This world comprises crazy beings for sure, I tell myself. I was lost in my thoughts when Ally knocked so loudly at the door. She is so annoying sometimes, she almost killed me.
“What do you want?” I was annoyed and she was there smiling.
“I want to know if you guys will stop ignoring each other and can you stop the staring competition that you guys have going on?” She said, taking a seat and making herself comfortable. Wow just wow, and here I thought I was the only one noticing everything, but of course, she was more curious than me and the number one gossip.
“Ally, please mind your business darling,” I wore a bored expression.
“I saw you today and….” Before she could finish, the office phone rang, and I waved my hand at her dismissively. Say being saved by the phone! I was in a hot seat, damn!
I looked as she walked away, noting mentally to be very careful with what I do. I didn’t want to be at the top of hospital gossip.
After a few days of seeing Jay at work, we finally had an encounter that brought us together. We didn’t have a lot of work since it was on a Friday. I got to work as early as usual and by around 10.00 am I was free. I had made it a routine that the moment I was free I found my way to Army's office to hang out with them. So it happened that day some political case was going on streaming live on our local channels. Being verdict day, the majority of people were excited to know what would happen.
Reaching Army’s office, there was no one there. Maybe she’s with her friends. Before I could check, I saw them following the live event in the waiting area. Walking up to them, the others don’t even realize my presence.
I take a vacant seat at one end of Army and I find myself glued to the screen minutes later. As I took a seat, I didn’t care to look at the seating arrangement to check who was seated where. Patients were watching too, so I didn’t bother.
When Army left on a call, I was so focused on the screen that I didn’t even notice who was sitting on the other side of her on the bench, s**t I even adjusted myself and occupied Army’s place, until I heard some soft voice talking to me thinking it was Army.
“Do you think this case is going to go through?”
She was so occupied with the case that she didn’t even realize the guys had left. I turned to look at who was talking and, to my surprise, it was none other than that fascinating lady. It was dumbfounding. I didn’t know what to say. I was a mess, too anxious for my liking. Hold yourself, Mira, she is not gonna bite. Please, God, don’t let her continue talking.
We just stared at each other without saying a word. By the look on her face, you could tell she wasn’t expecting me to be the one she had talked to, let alone even seated next to her. God, looking at her up this close got me thinking about how cute she is, she’s so adorable.
“I - - - I’ ’m-- I’m sorry, I thought it was Army.” From the way she stuttered, it was obvious she was in shock. Why is she apologizing? I took a few seconds to come out of my frozen state to gather the courage to talk back.
“Don’t mind, it’s okay, I’m good,” she said. Will she continue talking, or will she get lost now that we don’t even talk?
We sat there in awkward silence. I didn’t dare to continue talking to her. After a few minutes of silence, I guess she decided to talk to me, which caught me off guard.
“Do you think they will win this case?” I figured I should play along and be nice. Maybe the awkwardness between us will come to an end, and she won’t have to free Army’s office every time I get there.
“Mm, yeah I think so. Everything points to a win.” I said with a small smile.
“I rather they won, it was unfair in the first place.” So she likes politics huh?
“Yeah, it seems they are going to redo the elections again,” I replied to her in almost a whisper. I don’t like politics that much, but today’s case got me.
We exchanged comments about the case. We ended up chatting all through. I was shocked that our conversation went on smoothly. You can’t believe that we were the ones ignoring each other.
I found out that she was easygoing like my cousin said. You could tell there was some unease around, but I understood because it wasn’t like we were friends. This was the first time we had a real conversation.
The day moved along swiftly. She got off work earlier that day. I guess the weekend mode was already activated now that it was on Friday.
When I left work, I boarded a bus home, and on my way, my mind was all over. That woman is unique and makes me wonder if we will end up being friends now that we at least had a conversation. Will she stop ignoring me or was that it? I felt saddened by the thought of her not talking to me again. I wonder why I even cared about that. Curiosity was getting the best of me.
On Monday I get to work, I pass by my cousin’s office to say hi before I go get busy. Saying my greetings to them, I realized the strange lady was not in there. I went my way wondering if she would show up to work. I didn’t even get why I cared if she showed up or not. After I was done with my tasks, I headed back to the front office to chill as usual when I was bored.
As I walked in, I met her with my cousin. The look she had in those eyes almost got me glued to the doorway. Her gaze on me was so intense that I almost went back out, but Army had already seen me, and she called me to join them.
That is when she stopped looking at me and I finally had it in me to move toward them. My God, why does she look at me like that? It makes me want to run away. I think she realized the effect she just had on me. When I looked at her, she smiled at me so sweetly. Damn why is she doing this to me, she has a gorgeous smile though.
Army saved my ass from her intense stares when she asked me to go with her back to my office to give her some documents. I thanked God for that.
As I walked away, I knew back in my mind she was looking at my back. I was so curious to look back only to find her looking at my butt. She followed us outside only to stand and look our way. She’s crazy, isn’t she?
I turned quickly after I saw her checking me out and looked at Army to see if she saw anything, but she was busy talking about God knows what, because I wasn’t listening to her at all. That day we got time, and we sat, the four of us and we chatted a bit. This time she didn’t free when I joined them. Well, that is a nice start.
She even talked to me a few times. I was glad she was warming up to me. I somehow felt relieved. It takes 2 weeks for her to be comfortable with me. I also felt fine and even thought we could be friends and I hoped she wanted that too. I don’t have any friends around apart from the four now.
It was another day at work, and I was unsettled. I wanted to know her name. She hadn’t asked me mine, although she nicknamed me pretty. I was waiting for her to ask but she never did. I am one impatient person, so I had to do it myself. I waited until she was alone in the office and walked to her desk.
As soon as she saw me, she stopped whatever she was doing on her laptop and she sent me a dazzling smile which I never understood why because she rarely smiles. With me, she does a lot, most of which is for teasing me after she has made me freeze with her intense stares.
“Hi, stranger?” That was what I called her.
“Hello, Mira.” She smiled at me. I was taken aback by her knowing my name. I don’t remember telling her my name. Did she go asking about me?
“Are you busy?”
“No, not for you dear, what’s up?” She smiled wildly, knowing I was shocked she knew my name. You always do this to me, torture me with your smile, I see.
“I didn’t catch your name,” I asked shyly. It was crazy, I know.
“Yes, because I didn’t give it to you,” She answered, laughing softly. I swallowed hard because she caught me again. She is smart.
“I can see you already have mine. Do you mind telling me yours?" I smiled at her. My cheeks were burning from the embarrassing moment.
“Jaylin Fredricks at your service, but you can call me Jay,” She said, giving me a look. What was that about, I wonder?
“Okay Jay, it’s my pleasure to officially meet you, stranger.” I was grinning, I felt happy to finally know her name. Her name is unique too.
“The pleasure is all mine, pretty.” She was grinning at me.
We continued chatting about random stuff, her work. I even learned she hated to wake up early for work, but I girl gotta work right. I caught her more than twice checking me out as we were talking. It came to my realization that every day I was in a dress she was checking me out more than usual, or was I imagining my things? I was wondering why she was checking me out like that, and the way she stared at me.
Spending time with her brought me an understanding of why a lot of ladies wish she was a dude. She could have been a handsome and smart guy. I ain’t gonna lie because I would be easily attracted to such a person, smart, elegant, amazing, and gorgeous in one person that is perfect for me.
