Chapter 1
I walked into the house carrying groceries when I heard voices coming from the living room, maybe John my husband was back I thought to myself as I went to drop the grocery bags in the kitchen before going to welcome him.
As I walked into the living room, I saw John standing beside his first love, Gina Jones. Her hands were wrapped around him in an intimate way, which made me nauseated. I wondered what she was doing here in our home. We haven't seen each other since she dumped John in high school.
"John, what is going on here?" I asked as my gaze moved to John, who was avoiding looking at me
"You're back, Anne. I need to tell you something," John said, his gaze finally falling on me
"What is it?" I asked my voice tight with worry about what he was about to say.
"Gina is going to be living with us from now on," John said as shock washed over my face
"What are you talking about? You are joking right because I can't believe you just said she would be living with us now, " I said as I tried to make sense of what John had just told me
"You heard right, Gina would be staying with us," John repeated as I stared at him in shock
"Why is she staying with us? Why are you doing this to me?" I said as I turned to Gina. She had a smug look on her face
"Gina is pregnant with my child," John revealed. The room spun. I gasped loudly. It couldn’t be true. I had seen the signs, but I hadn’t wanted to believe them. Now, it was all too real.
"You were cheating on me with her? How could you do this to me, John? I've loved you for years," I said, my eyes filling with tears.
John sighed and looked away from me. "Anne, I never loved you. All these years, I’ve still loved Gina. The only reason I married you was because you helped me out with money. That’s it." When he finished talking, it was like my heart was breaking into a million pieces. After so many years of dedicating my life to him, he does this to me
"You never loved me?" I whispered, my voice breaking with emotion. Tears streamed down my face as I tried to wrap my head around what John had just revealed. He never loved me. He was just using me for the money I was giving him.
"Please, John, we can work this out. Don’t throw what we've built for years away, I love you, please don't do this to me, I beg you" I begged, reaching for his hand, but he pulled away, turning a deaf ear to my pleas.
As I cried, John's mother and sister stepped forward. His mother’s face twisted with disgust. "Anne, you’re nothing but a burden. You’ve been married to John for two years and haven’t given him a child. You’re just a barren i***t," she spat out as she glared at me, her disdain evident in her tone and gaze.
"We’ve always preferred Gina over you. She’s not a poor orphan like you." John's sister Amanda said as she glared at me. I stared up at them, not believing my ears, I worked like a dog to please their family, and this was how they repaid me by supporting their son's infidelity.
"Do you support him? He broke our marriage vows?" I said as John's mother laughed in my face
"Please, I never supported this marriage in the first place. Now that Gina is pregnant, he can send you away," John's mother said, her voice filled with disdain towards me
Their words stung each one a sharp jab at my heart. I wanted to scream that they were wrong, that I wasn't barren, that I was pregnant right now, and was planning to surprise John today. But now, the surprise was the least of my concerns as he had dropped this time bomb on me. How could he do this to me? After everything we've been through.
"Do you expect me to accept this joke? Do you expect me to welcome her with open arms?" I asked, my voice a mixture of pain and anger
"You have no choice, this is my house and whatever I say goes, if you don't like it you can leave, the door is that way" John retorted as I stared at him in shock, how could he just tell me to leave? Did all the years we spent together mean nothing to him?
"You want me to leave? Where do you expect me to go?" I asked as he avoided my gaze Gina spoke up
"John, dear, don't kick her out, I need someone to help me with the baby when it's born," Gina suggested, and I had to hold my anger.
"You don't want her to help you? What if she hurts your baby to get revenge?" Amanda said as she glared at me, "Mother and I will help you, Anne can leave, no one wants her here"
"If that's what you guys want, I'm sorry, Anne, it just happened between us, don't break John and me up, we love each other and the baby needs a father," Gina said as fake tears welled up in her eyes
"Gina, Don’t shed a tear for that brat. She doesn't deserve it. Think about your baby," John said as he placed a kiss on her temple, " I won't let her break us up. "
"Wow! What about me? What about my feelings? You don't care about me, " I said as John turned to glare at me
"Stop being selfish. The baby needs his father and mother," John said, his voice tinged with anger
"I see, it seems like I'm not wanted here," I said as I stood up, my gaze never leaving him and Gina, I took a deep breath, trying to steady my voice. "John, I want a divorce," I said, my voice trembling with so much pain as I stared at John.
I thought he would be sad, but John looked relieved at my request. "Fine, but leave everything I bought for you, including the wedding ring," he demanded, and I couldn't help but feel hate towards him. He has broken by heart, and he doesn't have a care in the world
"I see," I took off the cardigan I was wearing, the shoes, and finally, the wedding ring on my finger, "that's everything you owe, but just know this John I will make sure you regret everything you've done to me," I said as tears fell down my ears.
Then suddenly I felt a sharp pain in my stomach, then liquid sliding down my legs, I looked down at the bottom of my trousers to see blood. No, I can't be losing my baby, I felt weak as I slumped to the ground
"What is wrong with her? She is just being dramatic." I heard Amanda say as I struggled to stay awake then I heard the front door open and close, and then footsteps followed before I saw my elder brother Sam standing at the entrance of the living room.
As soon as his gaze fell on me, he ran to my side, concern written all over his face, "What's wrong, Anne? Wake up!" He said as he shook my body. Then I remembered that he wanted to come visit John and me to introduce himself. I guess that's not happening now.
"Hospital," I managed to say as he picked me up in his arms but was stopped by John blocking his path.
"Who are you? Where are you taking her, too?" John asked
"Get out of my way!" Sam yelled, his anger evident in his tone but John didn't move, “Men, get him out of my way" The guys that came with Sam did as they were told and moved John to the side.
The last thing I remember before passing out was John yelling something and Sam putting me in the car.
