Chapter 15. Keira’s POV There was heavy silence in the air for moments—counting on hours— after Jasper had rebuffed my offer of assistance and left the house in a fit of rage. Mrs. Hawthorne settled into her seat at the dining table and drank some water. There was a mess on the floor where Jasper’s plate had fallen down from the table. I didn’t realise I’d been sitting on the floor in the same corner Jasper had pushed me to when rejecting my help earlier. I moved over to the mess and tried to pick it together. “Leave it. Finish your meal,” Mrs. Hawthorne said with a cold firmness that left no room for questioning. I found myself standing to my feet to do her bidding — like I’d been enchanted. We ate in silence until she finished the food on her plate. I hadn't been able to eat much. “
