Pearl Gem The loud thud startled me. I looked up to find the personal assistant standing at the door of my office, his eyes filled with naked contempt as he dropped a pile of files onto my desk. “Fix them,” He said coldly, then walked away without another word. I watched him approach His Majesty’s desk and lean in to whisper something. Kade King, focused on the computer before him, nodded quietly. The personal assistant retreated to his own office without further acknowledgment. I recalled His Majesty’s words. Only Riven was truly loyal. It was clear this assistant worked for Her Grace. Turning my attention to the computer on my desk, already booted and ready, I glanced at the wall clock. Ten minutes past ten. Time to work. I picked up the first file and reached for a pen. The report detailed the fund assets of a bank account under the House of ThronCrest, likely media tabloid-related. I entered the figures and began typing, the rhythm of the keys like a melody in my ears. I corrected the ledger and set it aside, then grabbed the next file, another audit. More corrections, more fund reconciliations. Maybe this is part of His Majesty’s work, watching over every coin spent. That thought was cut short when the telephone on my desk rang unexpectedly. It took me a moment to register the sound. My gaze flicked across the room. The personal assistant was watching me again. His Majesty, however, remained focused, glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. I picked up the receiver. “Hello, Miss Pearl. Is His Majesty around?” A female voice asked. My heart skipped. She knew my name. “He is.” “Good. I’d like to speak with him right away.” I hesitated, then looked at Kade King still buried in work. Why hadn’t she called the personal assistant instead? Maybe because I was the secretary now. “I’m sorry, His Majesty is currently occupied. May I have your name and the reason for your call?” “Very well. Thank you. Mrs. Tonia, from the Majesty Orphanage Home. Tell him it’s urgent.” “I will, ma’am. Please hold on while I notify him.” “Thank you. The Moon Goddess bless you.” The words stunned me. A prayer? For me? An Omega? No curse, no insult? Somehow, her words warmed my chest and cleared the fog in my spirit. I smiled, then stood and walked toward His Majesty’s desk with the firm steps of someone owning her place. “Your Majesty?” I said softly. No response. His fingers danced swiftly over the keyboard. Impressive, focused. I stood patiently. A few seconds passed before he paused and looked up at me, his expression neutral and professional. “I received a call from a Mrs. Tonia. She says she’s from the Majesty orphanage and wishes to speak with you urgently.” Kade King stared at me for a moment, then returned his gaze to the screen. “Put the call through,” He said. I returned to my office and picked up the phone. “Ma’am?” “Yes, Miss Pearl?” “I will connect you to His Majesty now.” “Oh, thank you so much.” “You are welcome.” I forwarded the call and turned just in time to see Kade King pick up the receiver. “Hello, Mother,” He said. My eyes widened. Mother? So, Mrs. Tonia from the Majesty Orphanage Home… was his… relative or family? Thank the stars I didn’t get on her bad side. The time passed quickly after that, minutes rolling into hours. At five minutes to noon, I completed the last file and rose from my chair, carrying the stack to the personal assistant’s office. “Here, sir. All done,” I said calmly. He looked up from his computer and scoffed. “An Omega who can use a computer? What a joke. What did you even do in these files? Go back and redo them. Better still, you can quit and…” “Marce?” The sharp sound of Kade King’s voice cut through the room like lightning. The personal assistant froze, eyes wide, and spun toward the King. Kade’s eyes were locked on him. “Come. Sit,” Kade King said, rising from his chair and motioning to his own seat. The personal assistant’s face paled. “No, Your Majesty. I couldn’t possibly…” “Oh please, don’t be shy. Since you are calling the shots now in my corporation, you might as well take the crown and throne. Sit.” “I meant no disrespect, Your Majesty. I only wanted the job done right…” “So you think I brought an illiterate into my corporation?” “Your Majesty…” Kade’s eyes blazed. “You will review the work. All of it. Top to bottom. Twice. If you find a single error… then maybe you are right. Maybe my Omega doesn’t know office work.” His words were a direct challenge. Marce returned to his seat, visibly shaken. He began reviewing the files. I returned to my desk but couldn’t help watching him. Eventually, my gaze wandered to Kade King again. Back at his desk, focused. The glasses gave him an even more refined air, like a scholar. Or a model. But no, he was something more commanding than either. A small smile tugged at the corners of my lips. Just then, I noticed him glance up from his screen. Our eyes met. My heart fluttered. “I’m done, Your Majesty,” Marce said at last, stepping forward. “And what errors did you find?” Kade King asked, gaze still locked on mine. Marce glanced at me, uncertainty creasing his face. Then he turned back to the King and slowly shook his head. “None, Your Majesty.” Kade didn’t respond with words. He looked at me instead, and in that moment, his eyes lit up with unmistakable pride. Pride in me. It was a feeling that gave me strength. That added time to my life.
