Chapter 1
It was a rainy day, cars sped past, sending muddy water flying everywhere.
Cross Davis instinctively pulled the girl beside him back out of harm's way, and the filthy spray splashed all over Camilla instead.
He quickly offered an explanation, "She's younger than you. If her dress gets ruined, she'll definitely burst into tears."
Camilla Ellison fell silent. Slowly, she reached down and tried to wipe at the brand‑new white trousers she had bought specially to meet Cross' mother. But no matter how hard she dabbed, the fabric only grew darker and more stained, until a large, ugly blotch spread across the leg.
A hollow feeling suddenly washed over Camilla's chest. She lifted her head and said calmly, "Let's not go today after all."
Cross' expression froze for a split second, but soon Juliette Snow tugged at his arm. "Cross, let's hurry, it's coming down even harder now," she said softly.
Just as Camilla thought, Juliette's pretty pink dress, slightly damp now, clung faintly to her figure. Cross immediately tilted his umbrella further over her side.
He looked at Camilla with a hint of helplessness. "It's just a little mud. Are you really not coming?"
"No," she replied firmly.
He frowned, then simply took Juliette's hand. "Fine then, if you won't come. Juliette, let's go." Without hesitation, he moved the umbrella completely away from above her head.
Behind them drifted Juliette's soft, delicate voice, "Is this really okay? Won't she be upset when we come back…?"
Cross wrapped his arm right around her shoulders. "Let her be. It has nothing to do with you. Stay close to me, don't get soaked."
Camilla tilted her face upward. The rain was indeed falling heavier by the minute. But there was only one umbrella.
Ever since Juliette had joined them, there was simply no longer room enough for three beneath them.
