It's 5 oclock, I got 2 hours before I gotta pick up Kandis. I had offered her to move in with me before I purposed, but she didn't like where my apartment was. But I figured she'd move in after we were engaged, but shes still living at home with her parents. Caliming my place is in an “unsafe part of town.” Que the eye roll.
Unlocking my front door I head to the bathroom to shower and get ready. I text Kandis when I'm done getting dressed.
Me- hey babe, hope you had a good day, I'll pick up you up in and hour or so.
No response.
I still have an hour, so I make my lunch for tomorrow and start a load of laundry.
The alarm on my phone sounds, and now it's time to go pick her up for dinner. She still hasn't texted me back, which is weird. But without giving it a second thought I head to her parents house. I'm a little early as I pull on to her street. There's a truck parked on the street in front of the house. I can't help but wonder whose it is.
The passenger door opens and Kandis gets out. She laughing and pulling her skirt down and she turns around and blows a kiss to the driver of the truck.
I swiftly pull over and watch as the truck pulls off the crib and heads my way. The driver is a man I don't know. He's got lipstick kiss marks on his neck, and his shirt is unbuttoned. I immediately get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. Is Kandis cheating on me? The f**k?
After he turns the corner I pull up to her house. She barely made it to the front door. She turns around at the sound of my engine. A look of horror on her face. That's all the confimration I need. My heart sinks as I cut the engine and get out of the car.
“Baby!” She says, her voice shaking a little bit. “ You're early.”
“ No, I think I got here at the exact time I needed too.”
I sit on the hood as she starts walking towards me.
“I don't understand what you mean?” She says shifting her weight between her feet as she stands in front of me. Her lipstick is smired. Her hair is messy. There's a hickey on her exposed collar bone.
“Who was that?” I gesture down the road with my head, my arms crossed on my chest.
“Who?” She tries to sound so innocent.
I just raise my eyebrow. She can't be serious!
“Oh! He's just a friend, he gave me a ride home.” She says playing with her hands, amd avoiding eye contact. Her tell tale signs she lying.
“Kandis. I watched you get out of his truck. I can see the hickey on your neck. I saw your lipstick on his face. Try again.”
“I'm sorry Jude!” She starts crying. “Please forgive me!”
Can't believe this. All the s**t I've done for her. Her ridiculous demands for our wedding. I can't even look at her.
Without saying anything else. I stand up and walk back to the driver's side door.
“ Good bye Kandis.” Is all I say as I open the door and get in.
“Jude! What?!” She's sobbing now. She runs to my door as I shut it.
“Let's talk a out this! It was an accident! It didnt mean anything!” She starts banging on my window. “Jude! Please! We can still get married! It won't happen again! I promise! Jude!” She starts screaming when I start the car.
“No! Jude! Don't do this! She cries, slamming her hands on the hood of the car as I back out.
I don't even look back. I would of never thought it would end like this or end for that matter.
I drive home in silence.
I walk into work the next morning basically a zombie. I didn't sleep last night. I'm not one to talk about feelings, but f**k my chest hurts! Who would of thought Kandis could do so much damage.
“ Good morning.” Comes a sweet voice from behind me as I clock in. I turn around to find Victoria looking as good as ever standing behind me. She's got her hair in a bun today, my sweatshirt drapped over her arm. It looks like Johnnie came through with a bigger shirt for her. Shocker.
“Morning.” I say trying not to grumble. It's not her fault my fiancee was a w***e. I offer a smile I know doesn't reach me eyes.
Her face immediately falls with concerned. “Are you ok?” She asks.
“Not really, but it'll be fine.” I reply, I didn't plan on being that honest.
“Oh?” She says a frown on her face. “Would a hug help?” She offers holding her arms out.
“well, alright.” I say holding my arms out too and she steps into them. She squeezes me tight. And I actually feel better. I give her I smile as she steps back.
“So. Johnnie said Jamie called in again” She informs me, “He said to work with you again today.”
That is actually good news, I like Victoria, not only she she pretty she's funny and smart. She can start a conversation about anything. This might not be too bad of a day.
“Did you get a locker?” I ask her.
“I did!” She smiles wide.
“Sweet!” I smile at her as we head for the locker room.
I help her find her locker and figure out the code. We get our stuff put away and head for my desk. She immediately gets to work, going through the orders that have already been completed this morning. I sit at my desk and start up my computer, I have reports to file since it's Thursday.
“ I just gotta do some paper work real quick” I tell her, as I log in.
“Jude. To the office. Jude to the office.” The intercom speaker calls out.
The f**k?
“ Ok, I guess I'll be right back.” I tell Victoria as I get up and walk back to the office.
Walking through the door, my eyes immediately set on Kandis standing in the office talking with Johnnie. She giggled and ran her hand down his chest.
“What the hell do you want?” I ask, making her and Johnnie jump. I can't believe I never noticed this s**t before.
“Jude! There you are.” She says giving me her best bullshit smile. “I came to talk to you.” She continues stepping away from Johnnie.
“Really? Not to flirt with my boss?” I say bored and over this entire thing.
“ Jude, how can you say that? We were just being cordigal”
“Right.” I stare her down, go on honey keep lying.
“There's nothing to talk about. We're done, the weddings off. Have a good life Kandis. Good bye.” I say turning around to back go to work.
“Jude!” She starts crying again, causing a seen.
“No Kandis. How dare you bring this s**t to my job! Have you no discretion? Then the cherry on top, shamelessly flirting with my boss. When you came here to talk to me after I busted you cheating yesterday?!” I'm losing my composure. I'm trying hard not to scream in her face, I'm failing as she cowards and takes steps away from me. She's no longer crying, but her bottom lip is trembling.
“But I love you.” She says. Looking up into my face.
“No you don't.” I say before storming out of the room.
I head for the locker room, I'm so pissed, I need to hit something, I need to scream at the top of my lungs.
I make eye contact with Victoria as I walk past. She has a look of shock and concern as her eyes follow me.
I kick the door of the locker room open. I walk over to my locker. My muscle are tense and I can barely breath. I slam my head against my locker a few times, Punching the locker next door.
“Jude?” Her voice floats from the doorway. “I'm not going to ask if you're ok, cuz obviously you're not. Do you wanna talk about it? I'm not great at advice but I'm a good listener.”
“She's a lying cheating whore.” I say, my forehead resting on the locker door.
“Your girlfriend?” She tries to clarify
“ Fiancee. Well…ex-fiancee.”
Deep breaths Jude.
“Thats awful.” She whispers. She takes a few hesitant steps towards me.
“Yeah. I was so blind, so stupid! ” I say turning and collapsing on the bench.
“Hey, don't say that. You're not stupid. Love does blind us, but your not stupid.” She says sitting next to me.
“Love!” I blow a raspberry, “love is stupid.”
“Sometimes.” She giggles a little bit. “But that's what makes it worth it. As much as it hurts, and believe me, I know how painful love can be. When it's good, it's the best! You'll find somebody else, somebody worth the pain of love.” She says patting my knee.
“Nah, I'm not one of the lucky ones, not like you.” I say, feeling pitiful, pathetic and maybe a little hopeless.
“Well I wouldn't say that,”she giggles with a sad smile on her face. “But you'll find your person.”
“If you say so.” I sigh, putting my hand over hers.
“Come on. Working will get your mind of it. I can offer mindless chatter to distract you, if you like?” She bumps me with her shoulder.
“Alright.”I sigh again, giving her hand a squeeze.
We stand up and head back to work.
All day she talked. She told me about movies, books, TV shows. She talked about her last job, she talked about her kids, she talked and joked and succeeded in distracting my mind. By lunch we're were joking together, she's quick with the come backs and more than once did she shock me with what came out of her mouth.
As the afternoon went on, I think she started running out of things to talk about. There were longer pauses between subject changes.
“Are you running out of mindless chatter?” I ask her a small smile on my face.
“Well, no, but my jaw hurts.” She laughs massaging the sides of her face.
I can't help but laugh as she pouts.
“Don waff at meee.” She says as she rubs her cheeks, squishing her mouth.
I can't hold it in as I bust in out laughing. She soon joins in, her eyes watering from laughing so hard.
