Prologue
My dreams always start the same and end the same, my father King Alford laying in our favorite meadow next to the river on his back laughing about some silly face I made at the thought of becoming Queen one day.
" Now Vivi, you know that you are your mother and I's only heir. Leila is in line to the second kingdom. We've talked about this a million times." My father said smiling, tucking a stray piece of hair that escaped my braid, behind my ear.
" Ugh I know, but why can't Leila take over this kingdom? I can take over the second one." I say, pouting and crossing my arms. My father laughed and shook his head.
" You know she is not yet old enough to take over her responsibilities. Furthermore you have been in training to handle this kingdom. You will be an amazing Queen, you make your mother and I more proud every day. Just remember your mother and I will always be there to guide you and help you with your decisions once you take the throne." He said smiling, he patted my shoulder with his hand and went to stand up. He extended his hand out to me and I giggled placing my hand in his.
" Dad, I can stand on my own. Besides aren't you getting to old to be hoisting me up from the ground?" I asked laughing, taking in our surroundings. My father was around 75 years old but didn't look a day older than 25, perks of being a werewolf we had aging on our side. We never grew old, he had dark brown hair with striking features. His eyes were light green they always seemed to stare straight through me. He always knew when something was wrong. His hands were rough from the many fights he had endured during his time being King. The meadow was always beautiful this time a year, birds chirping and every flower you could ever imagine grew wild here. The smell was so sweet, the flowers mixed with the smell of the river to create a lovely get
away, a place to clear your head when needed.
" What are you thinking? You look lost in time, darling." My father asked, he always knew when I was thinking to deeply by something. I smiled and looked at him and shook my head.
" Nothing important daddy, are you ready to head back? Mother will be wondering what is taking us so long, you know how she worries." I said laughing, our mother was constantly worrying even though the royal army was always around when my father and I went anywhere by ourselves.
" Well I guess your rig-" He started to say, my head snapped to him and my eyes widened in horror. There was a huge arrow sticking out of his chest, my father fell to his knees the veins in his face and neck were visible which only happens when we come in contact with silver. My father looked at me and I saw a tear run down his cheek. " R-un" He choked out, as I saw a small bit of blood running down his chin. I stared at him, I could feel the tears running down my face.
" Guards!" I screamed, I took off running away from my father looking for the 7 men that accompanied us. The metallic smell of blood and silver hit my nose like a ton of bricks. I gasped when I saw our 7 guards laying in their own puddles of blood. They all had an arrow sticking out of their chests, their veins were all visible. My wolf was whimpering in the back of my mind.
' Something doesn't seem right Genevieve, we must go back to our father. Now!' Ariel my wolf yelled. I winced from her yell.
' I'm going! We have to mind link the royal guard!' I said back to her.
"Guards are needed immediately in the south meadow of the kingdom by the river! My father has been shot by an arrow, the 7 guards that accompanied us have all been shot. They are dead. My father doesn't have long please hurry!" I mind linked the royal warriors. I ran back through the trees to my father only to see him laying on his back next to the river. He veins still visible, his skin looked much paler than it had when I left. I heard the thundering of paws, I knew the royal warriors were almost here but it was to late. I fell to my knees by his side, he looked at me and I saw the tears in his eyes, his normal green eyes were almost white.
"I-I'm s-sorry, I l-love y-you." He said struggling to speak from the silver. I heard his heart stop and I couldn't hold back the sob that escaped my lips. I smelled my mother before I heard her.
" No! Alford no!" My mother screamed, I felt her push past me as she jumped on top of him sobbing. I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up into the eyes of my best friend Ivor, he was a few years older than me. His light brown spiked hair was disheveled from shifting. His eyes were a dark grey color from crying. I let out the breath I hadn't realized I was holding. I felt my lip tremble and the tears were falling harder as I stood and wrapped my arms around Ivor and held on for dear life. Life as I knew it was never going to be the same.
