She barely had time to flatten herself against the wall she stood next to before someone emerged into the hallway. She could only hope they had not seen her hair as she whipped her head back around the corner to hide. Luckily, whoever it was seemed far too distracted to notice, and she heard some muttering she couldn’t quite make out. Then, there was some shuffling and scraping. She heard sounds of effort, low grunts and sighs coming from someone still in the drawing room. Then the sound of heavy footsteps, weighed down by what Diana could only assume was the mysterious box. She knew that the staircase to the basement was in the opposite direction to where she was hidden, so she could only hope there was no reason for anyone to head toward the east wing. She held her breath as she listene
