A Grandfather's Time Travel Tale

1782 Words
"Why are you here, Grandpa?" "How come you're still alive?" she wondered. Her grandfather's face is exactly the same as before he died, only a little younger. Her grandfather looked around, scanning the street for any signs of danger. The police were still searching for Lily, and he didn't want to take any chances. "Lily, dear. I'll explain to you everything but I think we aren't in the right place, it isn't a safe place to talk." he looked at the place where he could still seen the police were looking for her. Lily assented and accompanied her grandfather to board the bus. "Come with me," he said, taking her hand, leading her to a nearby bus stop and boarded a bus a As they rode, Lily's grandfather tried to put her at ease. Her grandfather took her to a diner that had brick walls and red paint on the sides, with glass windows. When they arrive at the place, Lily noticed the vintage cars parked outside the diner. Various models and manufactures, ranging from Cadillacs to Mini Coopers, each with its own distinct design that seemed to tell its own tale. The door had a small bell that rang when they entered. The air was filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Except for a few patrons at the bar and a couple in the corner, the diner was deserted. Her granddad escorted her to a window seat. They chose to sit by the window because the sky was turning a vivid blue as the sun sank. "Well, take a seat, Lily dear," his grandfather said as he observed her eyes darting about the room. "I just can't believe it, grandpa," Lily exclaimed, her eyes wide with wonder as she gazed out the cafe window. "All these cars are so old and vintage. Her grandfather chuckled, also staring out the window. "Ah, yes, these are our time's cars, Lily, and it's amazing to see them again, isn't it?" Lily nodded, her gaze fixed on the scene outside. "Look, there's a Cadillac and a Mini Cooper over there, and that one is a Chevrolet Bel Air." "Indeed, grandpa, indeed," she said, a little smile on her lips. She then turned her attention to the diner's interior. Framed photos of classic movie stars and vintage advertisements adorned the walls. Lily was charmed by the jukebox in the corner, which was playing vintage songs from the 1950s and 1960s. " Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone Let's pretend that we're together all alone I'll tell the man to turn the jukebox way down low And you can tell your friend there with you, he'll have to go...," as the music plays. Contributing to the homey and friendly mood of the diner. Lily's curiosity grew as the food was served on their table. She couldn't take it any longer and had to ask her grandfather what was going on and how he could be living again from that year. "Grandpa, I can't take it anymore. How is this possible? You died on my time, and now here you are, looking exactly the same as you did before. Can you explain what's going on?" she pleaded, clearing her throat. Her grandfather took a deep sigh as he gazed at her with a sad expression on his face. "Lily, my dear, it's a long story, and I'm not sure if you're ready to hear it, but since you're here, I guess you'll have to listen." His hesitancy can be shown on his face for various reasons. It could be emotionally difficult to tell. "It all started when my father was the subject of an experiment. The goal of this project was to aid those who wished to forget the past. Science wished for people to live at present and to forget any negative memories from the past. " His facial expression seems to be a mix of contemplation and sadness. "He volunteered, hoping that it would help him forget his past experiences. He was a veteran of World War II, and he had gone through a lot, struggling to adjust to family life after the war." Everyone initially believed that the experiment was a success when it was declared successful. Due to the numerous deaths it resulted in among the human participants, the government ultimately decided to put an end to it. The effects of the vial produced a variety of delusions in the participants. "My father began to have strange experiences and claimed that he could travel through time. My mother suspected that he was losing his sanity. My father tried to find someone else who had a similar experience, but he was unsuccessful because the experiment was kept confidential." My mother pleaded the doctors to assist my father because she thought that he was experiencing delusions and that his trauma was getting worse. His eyebrows are furrowed slightly as he recall his father's involvement in the experiment, and his lips are slightly down turned. He appears to be deeply affected by the memory, perhaps even troubled by the implications of the experiment and its aftermath. His eyes appear distant, lost in thought as they continue to recount the events that led to their current situation. "Despite these difficulties, my parents managed to pull through, and I was born." A small, melancholy smile spreading across his face. "Unfortunately, my father passed away due to a heart attack. Following his death, my life took a strange turn. I found myself waking up on a crowded street with soldiers marching around me. At that point, I was only 16 years old and had no idea what was going on. It was the first time I traveled back in time, then I heard my mom's voice. It seems her voice is a bit older than in my present time. I believed, it was the voice of the future." His expression softens slightly, suggesting a glimmer of hope or wonder. "You'd better get ready for it because one day you'll hear the voice of the future, and that voice, will guide you to use your ability, my dear Lily." His facial expression conveys a sense of gravity and importance, emphasizing the significance of what he's saying. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you about this, Lily. I just wanted you to live your life without the burden of this ability." Lily was paying close attention as her grandfather told her the story, and she couldn't help but see the profound pain in his eyes. "Grandpa, please don't worry. You couldn't have done anything to change the situation, but I can't believe it! I am currently in the past, and...," Her expression appeared pained as she locked eyes with her grandfather and then embraced him tightly. Tears streamed down her face as she exclaimed, "I've missed you so much, grandpa." "Grandma has missed you terribly too," she added. He smiled trying to lighten the mood, "Has she won the lottery with those numbers?" "Grandpa, she did, she did! She wiped the tears from her eyes and laughed. "She was too excited to tell it to you..." Lily face got serious and tears flowed in her eyes again. "but when she went to the bathroom, she found your body lying on the floor lifeless." She kept on sobbing and crying. "I apologize, my dear Lily. Please promise me that you will always be there for your grandma," he said, clutching her hands tightly and pleading with her. "How can I keep that promise, Grandpa? I am here, in the past," she replied with a tinge of sadness in her voice, biting her lip in concern for her grandmother's loneliness. Lily's grandpa tried to reassure her, "You don't have to worry about it Lily, you'll get back soon." However, Lily's response was tinged with doubt as she sighed and acknowledged the possible consequences of being stuck in the past. "I hope so, grandpa, I hope so," she said with a hint of sadness in her voice. As they sat in silence for a few moments, Lily suddenly remembered something and asked, "By the way grandpa, are we still waiting for someone?" She had finished her drink. Lily's grandfather looked around the diner and then turned to her with a smile. "Oh, I forgot to tell you one thing," he began. "This is the place where I met your grandma." He pointed to a table in the corner of the diner. "You'll see the table over there? That's your grandma's favorite place." Lily's eyes widened with surprise. "Really?" she asked. He nodded. "I really love to go back to this time, seeing her on the first day I met her." He looked off into the distance, lost in thought. Lily was touched by her grandfather's sentimental words. She had always known that he loved her grandmother deeply, and hearing him speak about their love story made her feel even closer to both of them. Sure enough, a couple of minutes later, Lily's grandma entered the diner with a colleague. They headed straight to the corner table where Lily's grandpa was seated across the other table." Lily's grandfather began to relate their story to her after seeing it firsthand. They were watching the action from the other end of the diner when he said, "I was about to light a cigarette when I saw her. She was the most beautiful woman I've ever seen." "I was so enchanted by her beauty that I didn't even continue smoking. I was just staring at her, and before I knew it, the ember of the cigarette fell on my hand, and I let out a loud 'Ouch!'" He chuckled as he narrated the incident. "I shook my hand and tried to blow it, and that's when I noticed her. She was smiling at me from across the table, amused by my clumsiness." Lily and her grandfather observed the younger couple exit the diner, and her grandfather remarked with a grin, "That's how our love story began." He gazed fondly at his younger self and his beloved as they left the establishment. He pulled something out of his pocket and handed it to Lily. It was a key to his apartment and some cash. "Take it and you'll need them" he told her not to worry about the rent because he had signed a two-year lease. When Lily opened her mouth to say something, her grandfather took a step back and walked away. "I have to go now, Lily. I can't explain everything yet, but you'll figure it out. Remember, the voice in the future will guide you on what you need to do."
