CASSY'S POV…..
The stranger embracing me had the most alluring gaze ever. His smell was intoxicating and I could get lost in it all day.
“You weren't planning to fall?” His deep baritone voice questioned with a playful smirk. There was something about his voice and the way he stared at me.
The soft gaze in his eyes melted my inside. I swallowed hard and shamelessly winked at him before pulling away from him.
“Not at all.” I replied, strengthening my skirt.
“Lawrence?” I turned towards the sound of Herman's voice and saw him frowning deeply.
“Lawrence!” I mouthed to myself. “His name is Lawrence.” I repeated within me.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Herman asked, coming straight to where I stood. Pulling me behind him, he went ahead to say. “You're not welcome in my pack and you know that.”
“Come on, old friend. Don't be harsh.” Lawrence shrugged off in a nonchalant manner and pulled out the seat I was going to sit on. “I only came to tell you why I didn't send you an invitation.” he said simply and winked at me. “Only for me to see a damsel in distress. And you know me, I'm always a knight in shining armor.” He added which I think fueled every resentment Herman had for him.
Having met this guy for like a few minutes, I liked him already.
“Back off, Dude. She doesn't like your type.” Herman said, sending him a warning glare. I chuckled and pulled a seat to sit down. “Speak for Carissa.” I veered and winked at my sister. “She might not like Lawrence but I do.” I shamelessly admitted which sent the dining hall into an uncomfortable silence. Herman had his eyes going wide in surprise over what I said while Carissa glared at me and looked away. And then Lawrence had his lips pulling up in a grin.
“You heard the lady, she likes me.” Lawrence broke up the silent. I was starting to feel foggy from the excessive tension in the air.
“I need a word with you in my office now.” Herman ordered and left immediately. Lawrence stood and walked to me. Taking my hand in his, he slowly kissed my knuckles with a fixed gaze. “I will be back, don't go anywhere.” He was gone after blowing me a kiss which I caught.
The dining hall suddenly went quiet with just Carissa and I.
“Anyone would think 10 years would add a little dignity to you.” Carissa spat out. “I shouldn't be surprised. You were never loved so if anyone should show you the slightest affection, your lowest self would mistake it for love.” She gagged in disgust.
I knew what she was getting at; to get me angry but she failed to realize that I wasn't the girl I was ten years ago. This Cassy now give no damn about anybody's f*cking opinion.
“I'm quite famished so please save your talk for someone who needs it.” I dismissed her with a wave of hand and dived into lunch, not caring a bit about her scary glares coming my way every now and then.
**********
Slamming the door of my car closed, I dragged myself towards the entrance of my parent's house. Flashbacks gliding through my mind one after another. Memories that were not worth remembering but I needed them for constant reminders of why I was back in Shadow Pack. Everyone who had participated in making me cry in the past was going to pay, my parents inclusive.
After lunch, I had decided to pay my parents a visit. I was sure Carissa had told them I was in town.
“Dia!” A voice threw me out of my thoughts. I blinked to see Lorina, my nanny staring at me with so much joy in her eyes. The middle aged woman pulled me into her embrace sobbing quietly. “I can't believe this. You’re back?” She whimpered and honestly I didn't know how to react. She had always cared for me, the only one who had but it's been ten years since the last time I saw her and I was pretty shocked to see that she was still here. Carissa and I were grown ups now so why was Lorina still here?
I battled in my mind, skipping many of the things she said to me.
“Nana, you're still here?” I asked the minute we broke off the hug.
With a nod, she took my hand as she led us inside.
“Stay here, let me get you a glass of water.” She disappeared before I could even approve.
I took a deep breath as I roamed around in the big-size living room. Many portraits were hanging around yet none had me in it. I didn't let the ugly thoughts spoil my mood as I chuckled to myself.
Funny how I was sitting on one of the couches, what I was never allowed to do. Carissa was the favored one and she could do whatever she liked. I was more like her shadow. I was unwanted, hated and treated like trash. My father made it pretty clear I was a piece of trash he couldn't get rid of.
“Cassy?”
My breath hitched in my voice as my father's voice startled me. His voice was cold as ice. I slowly looked up to see him and Mom at the entrance staring at me like I was nothing. The killer expressions on their faces had been flinching and stumbling to my feet.
“Greetings to you, Dad, M..…” I choked on my words as I couldn't bring myself to finish my greetings.
“Save it, you cursed Child.” My Mom declaimed, her eyes glistening in anger.
“I thought we made it pretty clear years ago that you're unwanted here.” She went ahead to remind me of their exact words 12 years ago after they found out I was mated to Herman. Dad stood and watched Mom say the most heart shattering words to me.
As I listened to her remind me why they could never love me, it made me wonder whether there was more to their hatred and it was just because I was born after Carissa.
When I couldn't bear her harsh words, I looked straight into their eyes and muttered, “it was nice to see you two again.”
Casting a second glance at both of them, I proceeded to walk pass but I halted after a few strides away from them. “I no longer care if you love me or not. Just have it in mind that I was not the Cassy you once knew and you both should be afraid of this new Cassy.” Having conveyed my message, I smiled and left.
“We don't want to see her here ever again.” I heard Mom telling Lorina on my way out.
“What the actual f*vk?” I exclaimed in anger as I roared my engine into life and drove off, feeling worse than anything in the world.
My parents surely hate me.
