Six months later…
In the meeting room.
The weather outside was sizzling hot and everyone in the meeting room could see it through the luxurious glass window. But in contrast to the temperature inside, it was obviously second to zero degrees.
The room was filled with executives, head managers, and project representatives. But they were suppressed with a deafening silence and mentally pressured by a certain person's gaze.
Everybody's head was hung low and no one even dared to breathe loudly. Their knees were shaking under the table and they felt their palms getting clammy. The air conditioner was on, but everyone's forehead was covered with perspiration.
The certain person sat in his very own President seat in the middle at the topmost edge. His expression was void of emotions. His gaze was cold but sharp, enough to make everyone in the room fear him. As if his eyes were daggers and would kill them at any time if they weren't careful.
His aura was too strong and oppressive. It was dark and cold. He swept his eyes each of them like a mighty God and even if they didn't look at him, they could feel the ferocious tension of his gaze that landed on them. It again made them shiver.
As he wasn't talking, he was strikingly a beautiful big devil. He was clearly poisonous but everyone couldn't ignore how flawlessly pretty he was.
They feared him but also admired and envious of his genius mind and heavenly beauty.
Only his EQ has some problem. Well, indeed, God created humans with fair attributes.
Chen Lei pursed his sexy pinkish lips and frowned as he spared another glance at the documents lying dead in front of him. And after some time, his countenance became colder.
Everyone in the room thought that there was some problem with their sense of feeling. The room was cold and they also felt cold, but how come they were sweating profusely all over.
A 'plop' sound suddenly heard inside the room and everyone looked at the source. It was actually quite funny to see a pearl of sweat dropped on the document from one among them, but no one could bring themselves to laugh. Instead, they were choked in terror.
It was doomed. How could he get the document dirtied with his sweat?
Everyone silently and subconsciously wiped their forehead with their sleeves. Even though it was embarrassing, apart from Chen Lei and Arthur Jose, no one noticed how they looked as they did it.
Arthur Jose, who occupied the seat next to Chen Lei, chuckled internally: Damn these people, how could they be so funny? They are professionals but behave in front of the President like peasants.
Arthur Jose cast a sideways glance to Chen Lei, trying to read his expression. Indeed, the latter's thick brows knitted as he leaned elegantly on the backrest.
Chen Lei played on his expensive limited edition fountain pen by hitting his right palm with it. He swept his daggers eyes around once more and stopped to the one who unintentionally wetted the document with his sweat. "Is it hot here? Do I have to call someone to adjust the temperature of the room?"
"No! No, President!" Everyone embarrassingly shook their heads without meeting Chen Lei's deep eyes that were clearer than the blue sea.
Chen Lei's jaws tightened. He halted his hand striking his pen, leaned in, and picked the documents in front of him.
"Then anyone should explain this to me!" Chen Lei tossed the documents at the center of the table, and they slightly jerked their bodies with that abrupt action. "Is everyone's brain made of s**t? How can you not notice the problem with the report with the Sunshine project?"
Everyone grabbed the documents that were scattered on the table and went through the pages and gathered them together before handing them to Executive Marlon Agustin.
One of them who glanced through the documents boldly asked, "President, what specifically is the problem of the report?"
Chen Lei's brow curved up as he stared at the speaker. "Did I hire you here to become an idle employee? What's the use of you?" He looked around. "What's the use of all of you? Do I have to tell you about this and that everyday? If that's the case, you tell me, do I have to keep you here?"
Everyone lowered their heads in shame.
Chen Lei landed his cold stare to the one who held the wrong reports. "Mr. Agustin, I remember that you are the one who is the main-in-charge of this project. After working for so long under me, how can you neglect such an important problem?"
Mr. Agustin's face turned pale and his body trembled. He hurriedly wiped the sweat on his face that was threatening to fall again and stuttered, "President, I am indeed responsible for this project. But—"
An abrupt rang of an incoming call cut off the suffocating tension in the room. Everyone turned their heads around to look for the bold one who was afraid of death. They clearly knew that cell phones weren't allowed inside the meeting room. Worstly, interrupting a meeting, whether it was very important or not, meant courting death.
Who was bold enough to bring his phone and even forgot to put it in silence mode?
They were about to make a fuss when a familiar cold and almighty voice was heard. "Hello, you disturb me in the middle of an important meeting. You better give me a satisfactory report. Or else, you go hide."
Everyone in the room exchanged glances with each other. Although they were aware that their very own president broke one of their rules, who would dare to reprimand him?
The other person on the other end of the call flirtatiously laughed. "Come on. Calm down, bro. You are still as bad-tempered as before."
"Cut the chase." Chen Lei said in a threatening tone.
The other person coughed. "Fine. I have indeed some super good news for you."
"What is it?" Chen Lei stood up and went to the window. He looked down on the crowded ground outside as he slipped his right hand inside his pocket. The sleeve of his custom made black suit slightly rolled up and the Graff Diamonds watch proudly greeted the other's sight who watched the back of the owner.
"Well, I finally found her."
"Did you disturb me just to boost your new girlfriend?" Chen Lei's voice has a hint of anger. "You are really enjoying your life, huh?"
"Hey, listen to me first."
"Then tell me straight and I still have matters to do!"
"I found your woman."
My woman?... Did she appear again? What does she have to do with me? Why are you telling me this? Chen Lei wanted to say these to him but unknowingly blurted out something else. "Where is she? Is she doing fine?"
The person laughed teasingly. "Bro, you are really something. You are pretending not to care for her and pretending you had forgotten her, but how come I detect some excitement in your voice? Well, even if you didn't tell me, I know you are looking for her personally."
Chen Lei rubbed his temples. "So you call me just to tell me you found her? Are you that idle? If you don't tell me the main point, I will send you to South Africa right away. Do you believe me?"
"She is pregnant!!!" The other person finally couldn't hide the discovery anymore.
"Pregnant— wait, what??" Chen Lei unexpectedly raised his voice and he remained unaware that everyone was looking at him with shock. Then they turned to Arthur Jose, with the face asking him 'who is that mysterious person talking with the President?'
Arthur Jose only gave a glance to his boss and shrugged, pouting to indirectly telling them a silent 'I don't know.'
"Carl Martin, are you serious? Did you verify it?" Chen Lei's voice trembled.
Carl Martin sighed. "Don't you trust me? I just arrived at the Green Garden to drop off a friend. I was about to turn to leave when I caught sight of a familiar face walking slowly because of her big tummy. At first, I wasn't sure if it was her so I followed her out of the garden. I honked at her and she looked back. God, I was too shocked to confirm it's her."
"She… Did she get married?" A trace of sorrow suddenly filled his voice. "Was she happy? She must be even more beautiful in pregnancy clothes."
"What she was married are you talking about? She is single and more than seven months pregnant. Look at how sad you are. You are smart. You can tell it's yours."
"How did you know?"
"Did you forget who I am?"
"Yeah, you are the gossip king."
"Hmmp, I am a genius detective, okay?" A short silence occurred at the other end. "Chen Lei, what exactly happened to the both of you? That fiancè Princess girl, do you really plan to marry her— Oh wait, she is coming back. Wait, bro, I think something is wrong with her."
"What's wrong?" Chen Lei pressed the window anxiously. "Where are you now?"
"We are near the Green Garden's gate. Bro, she fainted. I can't talk to you anymore. I have to send her to the hospital. I'm hanging up."
"Hey, which hospital are you going to bring her to?" Only a tot-tot sound replied to Chen Lei.
Chen Lei nervously turned to Arthur Jose. "Hurry and find which hospital is Carl Martin right now. We have to go there!"
Arthur Jose pointed at the people in the room. "But they—"
"Hurry up!"
"Okay." Arthur Jose hurriedly left without any more questions.
Chen Lei loosened his tie as he walked over and braced his arms on the table. "The meeting is adjourned. You can all leave." Chen Lei was about to storm out first when he remembered something. "Mr. Agustin, go investigate the project on sight and send a detailed report to me. The sooner, the better. Clear?"
"Yes, President." Marlon Agustin nodded dazingly.
"Good." The single word he uttered before he left made everyone lost for words. He was clearly badly angry earlier, so why did their President suddenly become considerate?
If it was just a normal day, they were sure the meeting would end badly or someone would get fired, but how come the trail of events didn't follow the script?
What exactly happened?
What kind of call did he receive?
Who is that mysterious Carl Martin who made their President immediately end the meeting out of the blue?
…
Chen Lei stood pale in front of the morgue. He was on cloud nine earlier with the thought of becoming a father. Who would have thought that it would be gone all of a sudden?
Geneva gave birth prematurely and the baby was born breathless. There's no sign of life of the boy and he was so small when he came out.
Geneva was still inside the ward and was given the best treatment. She was still in trauma. She couldn't accept the death of her baby. Not only was she chasing him away and loathed him, she also didn't want to see her dead baby. She was holding her flat stomach while crying as she told him that her baby was still in her womb— well and healthy.
It pained him to see her like that. She was initially a cheerful and sweet lady but now she lost all of these. She looked at him with deep hatred.
He couldn't blame her and couldn't hate her either. Though he was confused to the point his brain stopped working from racking it to think of an explanation why she hated him.
It was already torturous for him to accidentally hear her say she didn't like him. But how come she still has the nerves to hate him?
Shouldn't he be the one to hate her?
Shouldn't he be the one to blame for the loss of their child?
She kept it from him. It was his right to know as a father. He hasn't even blamed her. But she already did for him. She blamed him to the point she wished him to just die.
How miserable and pitiful he was.
He continued to love her although it's pointless, but she reciprocated it with deep hatred.
Chen Lei was caught with laughter and sobbing as he rooted in front of the morgue. His shoulders were shaking terribly in pain and despair. Not only did he lost his son, but also found out how pathetic he was.
If Arthur Jose and Carl Martin weren't caught up with very important matters and needed to leave him alone, and let him personally handle the baby's corpse, if they saw him with this condition, they would certainly look down on him and mock him for the rest of his life.
Chen Lei was in the midst of grieving when he suddenly heard a sound of a baby crying inside the morgue. The cries of the baby warmth his broken heart for some unknown reason. He didn't think much about it and he just rushed inside the room to check.
