Chapter 14 Eight-thirty, time for the weekly property managers’ meeting. We drift into Caruthers’ boardroom. This is in our sales office at the other end of the retail strip, giving us an excuse to be late. ‘Boardroom’ is a very grand name for this cream painted office. In the centre is an oval table made from laminate in a pale-wood colour with uncomfortable grey chairs dotted around it. A screen for presentations covers one wall; a couple of large display trestles like those used by portrait painters are on the other side. A high, oblong window runs along the fourth wall. At the moment, this window is giving a view of a large construction site that will eventually become an apartment complex. I have wondered if, when it’s finished, we’ll be lucky enough to peer into someone’s apartment
