EDNA
My meeting with Malrick had gone as planned, we’d finalized the Delvin-Parker deal and Malrick had left almost immediately.
Malrick was a great businessman. He’d pushed every other thing aside when it came to business and it was alluring to watch.
I was 10 minutes early for the conference and as I walked in, I bumped into the last person I’d wanted to see.
“Watch where you’re going…” When she raised her eyes, recognition hit her.
“Edna..” she rolled her eyes.
“Stacy,” I called, unamused by her presence.
“What is a w***e like you doing here?” Stacy’s furious gaze checked me out.
“Excuse me,” I didn’t have time for her drama. I moved aside and headed straight to the front where my seat was reserved but I was stopped halfway by Colin. Why in the name of God was I bumping into them?
“Are you following me around? What? You cannot get it into your thick skull that we are done?” I never realized how full of himself Colin was but today I realized and it was disgusting to watch. How had I even been married to a man like him?
“Get out of the way, Colin. I am not here for you.”
“Then who are you here for? These men?” He pointed around the big conference hall as people chatted with each other while waiting for it to start.
“You no longer have me in your life so you need some rich man in your life and you’re here?” Colin was disgusting. The mere glance at him caused some kind of irritation on my skin.
“Now move.” When he stood still, I moved past him only for him to grab me by my arm.
“Where do you think you’re going to, this place isn’t for lowlifes like you.” His voice was loud enough for everyone to hear and they all had their attention on me now.
Stacy concurred.
“She’s a b***h and a gold digger. People like her will only cause trouble. I’m sure she’s here to find some rich man just like how she’d tried to exploit my darling here and take advantage of him.” She rubbed her hands on his shoulder slowly caressing him.
To say I was embarrassed was an understatement, anxiety had crawled up my skin, and fear that people were going to call me names had made me wish that the ground could swallow me.
“She doesn’t deserve to be here, take her out,” Stacy commanded the security by the door to take me out and as they matched towards me, it felt like a cat had caught my tongue.
People didn’t recognize me because they’d believed for the last four years that my father didn’t have a child.
“I’m Edna Parker and the Parker group of companies organized this conference for all upcoming organizations. Unfortunately, you don’t know who you’re speaking with.” On hearing my name, the guards had stopped.
“Edna Parker, you wish! You think you can just lie about your father. I bet your father is a lowlife just like you and you're faking to be a billionaire’s daughter.” Stacy commented, causing me to roll my eyes.
I was so done with them.
“Get out now.” She commanded. When the guards had stopped trying to take me out, she’d taken it up herself to pull me out of the hall.
She grabbed me by my arm and Colin did too and they both pulled me towards the huge door of the hall.
“Let me go, Stacy! Colin!” I was not about to beg them. I was not about to plead to be let go of.
All the guests looked and could barely do anything. How could they do anything? They didn’t know how I was.
“Ms. Parker.” A calm voice from the back called. It was a tall man with blue eyes. He was my father’s assistant. Harvey Green.
“We apologize for the inconvenience caused.” I was more than glad that he had come right on time.
“What’s going on here,” the organizer turned to face Colin.
“Do you know who you’re messing with? Edna Parker? Mr. Parker’s daughter. Who do you think you are?”
“What?” I had watched the look on Colin’s face and I was so satisfied. He looked disheveled and confused.
“She can’t be a Parker, she's a whore.” Stacy mouthed while Colin watched in disbelief.
“Ms. Parker, what do you want me to do with them?” I closed my eyes and took in deep breaths. I wanted to watch them crumble. I wanted to be satisfied just by their confused look so I let them say.
“Let them stay, if they cause another scene, do not hesitate to throw them out.”
I loved the look in his eyes. The company he’d so badly wanted to partner with was my father’s company. I’ll watch him try.
The conference had started and was soon over and I had given my speech on the importance of
I grabbed my bag and headed to the exit. I had an important meeting by 3 pm and it was currently 1pm.
My car was ready and waiting and I had enough time to prepare for my next meeting.
As I reached the exit of the hall, a hand pulled me swiftly and dragged me to the back, into the tiny store room filled with some equipment.
It was Colin. How pathetic.
When he’d shut the door behind him, I took a step backward.
“What do you want now?”
“I want us to talk.” He retorted.
“ I don’t want that.” I pushed past him and tried reaching for the door only to realize he’d locked it. The room was dimly lit and dusty.
“You owe me this conversation, Edna.”
“No, I don’t. I stopped owing you things when we ended our marriage a week ago. When you and your mistress killed my baby a week ago.”
“You were never pregnant, Edna.” My lips shut in anger. He still didn’t believe me.
“Yes, I was and you’d left me on that cold floor to die.”
“Why did you not tell me that you were a Parker? Your father is Edmond Parker and you never told me about it.”
“Open the door, I want to leave. You disgust me.”
“I will not open the door until we talk. Until you tell me why you lied about your family.” His jaw tightened and he folded his fist.
“Open the door! Someone help me, please.” I banged hard on the door and he grabbed me, his hand on my neck, slowly tightening it by the second.
“You knew how important a deal with that company was to me and yet you lied.”
“Yes, I lied. What can you do about it? We are over now.
“No, we are not until I say it’s over.” His voice was in a whisper, his face very close to mine as his grip on my neck tightened.
The door burst open and behind the broken door was Malrick. Grey eyes at alert. He reached for Colin, sending a tackling punch to his face.
He fell hard on the floor and I ran to Malrick’s arm. Soft, tender, and careful. He whispered that I was now safe.
“I’m here, Edna. You’re safe now. He cannot hurt you.” He held me for a while and then slowly led me out of the venue and into his car waiting for him.
I followed without hesitation and when we were alone in the car I finally broke down.
Tears were streaming down my cheeks and ruining my makeup.
It could have been worse, he could have hurt me like before. He could have touched me without my consent like before but Malrick was right on time to save me again.
“Thank you for saving me. If you hadn’t come, I don’t know what would have happened. Colin is a madman and he would do everything to get back at me.”
“I’m here now and he would not come close to you.”
“Thank you.” Only now did I realize that our hands were locked. He looked me in the eyes, like he wanted to make me confess.
“I will never let him come near you. That’s what I’m here for. To be by your side.” Malrick always had his way with words but I knew he never went against his words.
He’d always done as he said.
“Thank you.” I sniffled another cry.
