Amanda pov
And just like that, I was now the new CEO of a multi-billion company. I glanced at my reflection in the mirror as I passed by and stopped to stare. My cheeks were red and flushed, my eyes almost puffy from restraining tears from flowing down. I sniffed and laid back on the bed.
I thought of Alvarez. There's something about him that's just off, strange even. From his look, to how I felt when he was around me and when he shook my hand. The spark I felt was too strong to deny.
Why did that happen? I can't be getting sparks for a stranger I just met. Yes, he's handsome but I've never lost control like that ever before.
My phone pinged from a text.
Get your things ready. Your new boss, Mr. Alvarez is giving you a new accommodation. Gilbert texted, and beneath it was a wink emoji.
I shook my head, not quite believing what I read. But an hour later, a room attendant came calling me. I grabbed my packed bag and went downstairs.
"Are you sure it's here?" I asked the driver as he stopped in front of a mansion.
I was expecting an apartment, not a mansion. What's going on?
"Yes, ma'am." He replied.
I was dazed as I kept staring at the mansion.
"Ma'am, you need to come down."
I muttered an apology and walked over to the building. There was a gate and it opened before I got close to it.
Was someone in there? Perhaps, Mr. Alvarez. Or did this driver drop me off at the wrong place?
"Hello, Miss Amanda." Gilbert called out with a smile on his face.
He was standing in the middle of the compound next to a row of beautiful flowers.
"What's going on?" I asked as I rolled my valise towards him.
"Your new home." He said and spread his hands around.
"But why?"
"It comes with the job. You're the new CEO of BAP Group."
"But it's too much." My voice dropped in a whisper as I stared around. The building was white and the balcony was enclosed with glass. I could see the chandeliers, shining and giving a warm ambience to the beautiful furnishings.
"It's not much for our new CEO." He said with a wink. "Come on, Alvarez is inside and he wants to speak with you."
I shivered at the thought of close proximity with him again. We both walked inside and I gasped as I took in the view and interiors of the living room. Everything was classy and expensive. White furniture, white wall, black floor, a mini aquarium and is that a 3D wallpaper ceiling?
"Hope you like it."
I turned towards where the voice had come from to see Mr. Alvarez in grey pants and hoodies. I haven't pictured him in anything other than suits but this looked good on him too. It's crazy, but I know everything will always be good for him. He had a body designed for a model. With just a hoodie on, I could see how large his muscles were and a peak of his chest too.
"Yes, but…"
"No buts, come with me."
I swallowed and followed him as he led the way.
We got to the balcony and I looked around in admiration. The view here beats what I had glimpsed earlier on. He sat on a black sofa and gestured for me to take the seat next to him.
I waited for him to speak but all I got was silence. My heart had taken a rhythm and it kept beating fast.
He cleared his throat and I jumped.
"It seems like you're scared of me." He said and placed a hand on mine. The skin contact led to an eruption of butterflies in my stomach.
"I'm not." I lied.
"Good. I don't want you to be. I don't bite." He said and removed his hand from mine.
Well, that sounds like the opposite of what you truly mean.
"BAP Group is my brain child and one of the largest conglomerates in the city. We went through your portfolio and I believe you would take my company to the next level."
"I will."
"Good."
Silence enveloped us again and it was beginning to get awkward.
"Your parents…" he began, breaking the silence.
"Foster parents." I corrected, wondering why he was bringing it up again.
"Right, foster parents. How did the first one get you? What happened to your biological parents?"
"I was told they were killed in an accident."
"But you grew up with them, right? How were they?"
Okay, this is now getting strange.
"Why are you asking all these questions?"
"I need to know who's working for me, the kind of upbringing they had. Sorry if it offends you."
I stole a glance at him, surprised that he apologized.
"I can't remember anything with my biological parents. I must have been involved in a ghastly accident because I lost my memory. My first foster parents were nice but they moved out of the country and I was transferred to another home."
"Okay, that's all I wanted to hear. Make yourself comfortable at home." He stood to his feet and I caught a whiff of his cologne.
I resisted myself from inhaling it in order not to add to the list of crazy things I was beginning to indulge in.
"Amanda," he called out just as he was about to walk away.
My name sounded different coming from him.
I stood to my feet, sensing what he had to say was important.
"To do well in the company, you need wits. We have so many rivals and insiders as rivals too in the form of board members and that's why I opted for employing someone with experience in the field to train in place of picking a new CEO from within."
He turned around and stared at me in the eyes.
"Kick asses when it gets to do that because it sure will and I hope you can do that well."
I smiled, "they are going to be amazed and wouldn't cross me again if it ever gets to that."
"Good." A small smile played on his lips. I watched his eyes go from my eyes to my lips and back to my eyes quickly.
"By the way, I live next door." He said and left the balcony.
He lives next door. Is that good news or bad news? Well, I'm going to find out soon.
A small part of me was elated and was looking forward to… to what?
"He's your boss, Amanda. He's your boss." I reprimanded myself. But it's not my fault that he's hot with a good s****l appeal.
I shook my head at the thought. This is getting worse, for real.
