Chapter 1: A Turning Point Amidst Confusion
Chapter 1: A Turning Point Amidst Confusion
In the early morning city bustle, Li An walked towards the company with his head down, his ears filled with the sounds of bus brakes, street vendors calling out, and the hurried footsteps of passersby. Moving through this busy and indifferent city, he felt like just another grain of sand—small and insignificant. Despite working at the company for three years, Li An still hadn’t found a sense of belonging. His colleagues, who spent their days flattering the boss and fighting for credit, seemed to never pay him any attention.
The office air was thick with the scent of coffee and the copy machine. Li An sat at his workstation, turned on his computer, and began his day of monotonous work. His supervisor, Brother Huang, walked by, giving Li An a dismissive glance, and said with a tone full of disdain, “Li An, can you finish these files today? Stop holding us back, everyone’s waiting on you.”
Li An raised his head, suppressing his frustration, and nodded slightly, “Okay, Brother Huang, I’ll handle it as soon as I can.” Brother Huang snorted and walked away. Watching his back, Li An couldn’t help but mock himself. He understood that in the company, he was just an insignificant character, never worthy of any recognition.
However, this day was different, thanks to the arrival of a newcomer.
At ten in the morning, all employees were called into the meeting room to announce the arrival of the new project manager. Her name was Cheng Yiyi, thirty years old, young yet full of energy. She stood on the podium, her gaze firm and her voice strong, “Hello everyone, I’m Cheng Yiyi. I’m very happy to join this team. I hope we can work hard together to complete every project and overcome every challenge.”
Li An sat quietly in the corner of the crowd, secretly observing the new project manager. She was different from the others in the company who only knew how to flatter their superiors—her words conveyed genuine passion for the work and the team. This attitude was like a breath of fresh air, clearing some of the gloom in Li An’s heart.
After the meeting, Cheng Yiyi walked over to Li An’s workstation, smiling as she extended her hand, “You’re Li An, right? I saw your name earlier, and I wanted to get to know you. I hope we can work well together.”
Li An was a bit surprised. It took him a moment to react, and he quickly stood up to shake her hand, “Oh, hello, Manager Cheng. I’ll do my best to cooperate.”
Yiyi smiled, “No need to be too formal. We’re a team, and only by helping each other can we complete the project well.” With that, she turned and left, leaving Li An standing there, overwhelmed with emotion. The feeling of being acknowledged, something he hadn’t experienced in years, suddenly surged through him. It left him at a loss, but more than anything, it filled him with a newfound motivation.
During lunch break, Li An went up to the company’s rooftop, a place he often came to relax. He stood quietly in the corner, looking at the distant skyscrapers and the endless flow of traffic, feeling something changing within him. He remembered what Yiyi had said to him, “We’re a team, and only by helping each other can we complete the project well.” Those words echoed in his mind, like a light in the darkness, showing him the possibility of change.
“Maybe, I really can make a difference,” Li An said softly to himself.
That night, Li An returned home and, as usual, brought dinner to his bedridden father. Watching his mother busy in the kitchen, he suddenly felt a deep sense of responsibility. He could no longer live aimlessly like this; he wanted to be someone his family could be proud of, someone who could take control of his own destiny.
Li An opened his computer and started searching for the company's training programs. The high-difficulty training program had strict requirements, but it could help employees improve their professional skills and provide an opportunity to work on important projects. He knew it would be a huge challenge, but he decided to sign up. He wanted to prove himself—to prove that he was no longer the humble and helpless Li An.
At the moment he submitted the application, it felt as though he could see a whole new version of himself waiting for him ahead.
