It had been four days since Bobbi Herschfelt was admitted to MICU. Her condition had worsened. She remained vented and never showed any signs of waking up. Her EEG showed diffuse activity, and she was fully dependent on the ventilator with no spontaneous respirations. Her kidneys were shutting down, and the medical staff had been discussing options with her ex-husband, who was her next of kin and legal health care surrogate.
In light of their strained relationship, he no longer felt any emotional tie to her. He had remarried and moved on and was only there because he had to be. The sad truth was, there was nobody else.
