CHAPTER ONE
It was a beautiful Summer morning. Everyone was busy going to work, going to markets and stalls, going to the mall, some exercising and driving with their families and so on. Max was on his motorbike with headphones on. He was going home from the grocery store after getting groceries for his grandmother, Tess. He was enjoying the cool breeze and the music coming from the headphones. He didn't notice a young guy crossing the road with headphones on as well. He opened his eyes immediately and pressed his horn loudly, the other guy seemed not to have heard as he kept walking. Max immediately swerved, making him crash to the ground, spilling all the groceries on the ground. The guy looked at Max and kept walking. Max stood up immediately and went to the guy. He grabbed his hand and pulled the headphones from his head. He yelled, "Are you not going to apologize or say something?" The guy looked at him and yanked his headphones from him saying, "There is nothing to say." He looked at the floor and back at him, "You should watch where you are going cause I'm not leaving this damn road for anyone....and pack your groceries. " He adjusted his shirt and walked away. Max groaned and packed the spilled onions, tomatoes and tin products on the floor. He winced in pain as he had hurt his arm as he fell. He got up on his bike and rode home. He entered the house and dropped his helmet and the groceries on the kitchen table as his grandmother entered. Tess noticed the bruise on his face and stopped him asking, "What happened Max? Did you get into a fight?" Max took the first aid box and said, "No Tess, I didn't get into any fight, I fell while trying to save someone's life." Tess collected the box from him saying,"Come with me...let me help you." He followed her into the living room and sat down. She put the cotton wool into the Methylated Spirit and dabbed the bruise on his face. Max winced in pain as it stung a bit. Tess looked at him, "You have always been a good child and always putting people's safety first before yours." Max touched her hand, "I guess it's something I enjoy doing Tess." Tess stood up and went to the drawer and brought out a box. She handed it to him saying, "From your father." Max opened the box and saw a pair of white sneakers with folded paper in it. He took the paper and read what was in it. "I know how much you love sneakers and I'll keep sending them to you every month. " Max sighed and put the sneakers back in the box, " I'll just give it out Tess. He keeps bringing it every year, same size, same letter, what does he think I am? Sending sneakers would not change anything. I just wanted two people as my parents." Tess touched him, "He's really trying, I know what my son is capable of Max. Just keep accepting it and don't give it out yet."  Max didn't say anything and Tess asked, "I know you are about to start your last year at Adams High, how do you plan to spend your last year?" Max shrugged, "It's not like high school is interesting to me though, all I plan to do is to study and graduate. " Olivia, his twin sister came downstairs gasping with her mouth wide open and her hand on her chest, "Oh what did I just hear you say Max? You want to throw away your last high school moments just to study. You didn't even think about Prom and Basketball."  Max folded his arms, "Olivia how many times have I told you not to eavesdrop whenever I'm talking with Tess?" Olivia sat down, "Oh please Max, I wasn't eavesdropping. Besides I was coming downstairs and guess what....I have ears."  Max rolled his eyes and Olivia asked him, "Seriously Max, please tell me you are joking around. I mean you are popular Max and if you use this last year to study alone, it would ruin your reputation." Max shook his head, "You are just concerned about a reputation that isn't there Olivia. I didn't ask to be popular, you made me popular by tweeting on your i********: or whatever about me and Charlie." Olivia smiled, "Come on Max, you know Charlie has had a huge crush on you since, you just keep pushing her away." Tess kept looking at both of them and asked, "Since both of you wouldn't involve me in the conversation, I have a question. Is Charlie the girl that has liked Max since kindergarten?" Olivia clapped her hands, "Yes Tess...that's her. Max, Tess even knows her. Don't be a bully and give her a chance." Max stood up and said, "No matter what you say Olivia, I am not interested." Olivia shrugged and crossed her legs, "I'm sure that's not what the date tonight would tell you." Max looked at her, "What did you do Olivia? What date?" Olivia smiled, "I set you and Charlie on a date tonight to prove herself to you. School is resuming next week so this is a good chance." Max was already getting angry and looked at Tess then back at Olivia and yelled, "What in the world is your problem Olivia?! Are you dense?! Why on earth would you set me on a date with Charlie?!" Olivia stood up, "Relax Max, I was just trying to help her emotional self and besides with what I did, it would help me win a spot in her VIP list this year for her party." Max blurted out, "This is for a party and a VIP list?! I thought you knew better, Olivia! Cancel the date, I am not going!" He was about to leave when Tess stopped him saying, "Listen Max, I understand if you are pissed about what Olivia did and I'm coming to her later, but you can't just cancel on a planned date especially if it's about someone that is very interested in you. Go for the date Max and you don't have to talk about it anymore." Olivia smirked, "See Max, even Tess gets it." Tess frowned at her and said, "It's the right thing to do even if I'm mad at you for what you did. Yes, you are trying to look out for someone in emotional distress, but you need to consider other things as well, Max is your brother and you need to have asked him before you did that. Be warned." Olivia went to Tess and hugged her, "I'm very sorry Tess. Max is just a big bully." She looked at Max and said, "I'm very sorry Max, but I'm still happy you are going for the big date. It's by 7pm anyways so go get ready." She gave Tess a kiss on the cheek and went to her room. Max took his helmet and Tess said, "It'll be fine Max, I'm sure of it. Just be cool with her." Max nodded and went to his room with the box of sneakers.  His room was like a normal high school kid's room but he was more mature. He had a few posters in his room and his room was very organized and neat. His clothes were neatly arranged and his shoes were also arranged. He had a reading table with a lamp. His laptop was already on the table. He went to his shoe rack and opened the box of sneakers and put the shoe with the rest. He looked at the rows of sneakers he had because his dad keeps sending them every month since he was five. His father, Liam and his mother, Zora had been involved in an argument which led to their separation but not divorce. Each of them wanted custody of the child, but since they were twins, Tess stepped in and decided to take care of them saying that the children should not be separated, so he had been living with his grandmother since age five. He went to his bed and took out his phone. He called his best friend, Bob and told him to come over. Bob came in some minutes later as they lived close to each other. Bob sat on his bed and Max sat on his reading chair. Bob threw a folded paper playfully at him and asked, "Come on bro, what's the matter. You look lost....earth to Max." Max shook his head, "Olivia set me up on a date tonight with Charlie." Bob burst out laughing, "Oh wow, she finally got you there Max." Max shook his head, "Not helping Bob." Bob sat up, "Come on Max, everyone at school knows Charlie has a crush on you and she's popular as you. I mean in other high schools, you guys would have been dating and both of you will be the king and queen of high school." Max sighed, "You of all people know that I'm not interested in popularity." Bob shrugged, "Well, you've found yourself there, you can't do anything about it." Max closed his eyes and Bob stood up, "Stop sulking and let's get you ready for your big date. You can't undo what Olivia has done Max. You just need to follow and make the best out of it." Max stood up groaning and Bob yelled, "Let's get this date started!!"
