A Day and Half

Hira walked out of Adarsh’s room with her mind repeating his words over and over

“Don’t betray Sanjay’s trust, you will never get it back if you did, never”

Why she felt an ache of fear with those words? Does she really care if she lost Sanjay’s trust?

But wait why would Adarsh warns her such a warning in the first place? Could it be that he sees her lies and knows she learned to care for Sanjay and wants her to come clean, no it can’t be; why would he leave her in the mansion and defend her to Marie, if he knows she is lying to them?

Then he cares for Sanjay and maybe cares for her as well

After all she did hear him defend her and take her side in front of Marie

Then unselfishly take the blame of Marie’s action to save Sanjay and Marie from losing each other

Do cold blooded murders do that?!!!!

Sonia: Ms. HIRA

Hira’s eyes widened and looked at Sonia who was looking at her with deep frown then she noticed few maids running upstairs

Sonia: I am looking for you everywhere, go to the third floor; there is a situation

Hira: Sanjay?

Sonia frowned: who else!!!

Hira rushed to the elevator and Sonia’s eyes widened...

Sonia: wait, do you know the password?

Hira entered the elevator and looked at Sonia’s terrified eyes as the door closed, she entered the password (Insanju) and while it went up she thought of the other person here with personal vengeance, did he hurt Sanjay already?!!!

Hira put her hand over her chest till the elevator opened and it reached to the third floor, she rushed out walking towards Sanjay’s room

(CRASH)

Hira gasped hearing the sound of a surface of glass shattering, she ran to Sanjay’s room and saw his siblings standing looking at the closed room door as Marie sobbing, sitting on the floor and knocking slowly and the puppy Insanju barking beside her 

Marie: please don’t hurt yourself, open the door, I will do anything thing you want, I beg you

Hira: what happened?

Marie looked at her with a frown of hatred and Hira took a step back

Eve: Sanjay is very angry, he locked himself in his room and the keys with us are not opening the door

Hira: Let me try my key then

Viola: there is no use; he put something heavy behind the door

(Then she gasped when the puppy sniffed on her shoe)

Eve: Ma, I guess it’s time to call the security to break the door and chain him so he won’t hurt himself

Jude: I will go bring the security and the chains

Marie nodded without thinking and Jude rushed towards the elevator, Hira turned and looked at them with a frown

Hira: no, no he promised me he won’t hurt himself again, he was happy; he can be happy, just let me talk to him

Marie stared at Hira with widened eyes and Hira looked at her nervously

Hira: it just...he is angry because of something related to me and...

Marie: fine (then she swallowed and looked down) just try

Hira nodded as Marie frowned faintly and wiped her tears then stood away from the door, Hira approached the door and knocked faintly

Hira: Sanjay, do you hear me, can you open the door please, I need to speak to you

A moment of silence then they heard a sound of something heavy being pulled then and the doorknob turned, Marie closed her eyes in relief and Viola smiled and looked at Eve who smiled as well as the door opened slowly, Sanjay stood in front of them sweaty, his face red and he was breathing heavily, Marie hugged him and sobbed on his chest as the maids entered the room and started to clean the damage

Marie: why are you doing this to me?! Why you hate me so much?

Sanjay hugged Marie tight and whispered: no  

And he kissed her head while his eyes on Hira as she was looking at the room behind him with widened shocked eyes.

the room seemed demolished by a tornado not a man’s bare hands, the window’s glass was broken and all over the floor, the bed is now with just three legs and the fourth is between the broken glass with the scar of the chains left on it visible and not a single bottle of medicine is not broken, the puppy Insanju entered and bit on the wooden leg of the bed

Marie: are you okay? You are okay, right? Listen your father is very sorry; he didn’t mean to hurt Hira, right Hira...?

Sanjay: Leave him

Marie’s eyes widened and looked up at Sanjay then at Hira, Eve and Viola who were as shocked

Sanjay strictly: Leave him, he is a horrible man, he doesn’t deserve your love

Marie covered her lips then sobbed and ran away and he closed his eyes

Hira frowned: you hurt her feelings

Sanjay nodded and sat on a chair in the corridor and held his head, Viola put her hand on his shoulder

Viola smiled: I think its great idea, Insanju; we all don’t deserve Marie, she should leave us

The puppy suddenly barked and ran towards Viola and she screamed and ran away

Viola: NO I HATE DOGS

Hira chuckled and Sanjay smiled half smile

Sanjay: good boy, he learned his name so quickly

Hira: that is why you named it Insanju?! Because she hates dogs and you know when she says Insanju he will come to her?!! You are not easy, are you?

Sanjay: I am not

Eve frowned: SANJAY, we were terrified out here, but apparently you don’t care for us, you broke your room then insulted Papa and broke ma’s heart and now you are all okay and making jokes with Hira too 

Sanjay: I am sorry, you are right

Eve frowned and walked away and Hira ran behind her

Hira: EVE

Eve stopped in her place and turned to her with a frown

Hira: Eve, please excuse Sanjay (then she smiled) you know it’s really a progress that he can express his feelings fully, he is been for years locking his emotions inside him and that wasn’t healthy (then she nodded) yes we will face the problem of that his emotions will be extremely raw and stronger than ours, means he will be very angry or very happy or whatever, and will go from emotion to other rather quickly but I believe that is better than when...

Eve angrily: didn’t I tell you to change this old black saree? Are you provoking me?

Hira’s eyes widened: what?!!!!!

Then she looked at her saree then looked back at Eve  

Hira: no I just didn’t have time to do so and didn’t think it’s such a big deal for you

Eve took a deep breath: I am sorry Hira, I am just so nervous from all what is happening; I think I need to have some sleep

Hira nodded: I understand, it was a hard day

Eve smiled and nodded then walked away and Hira walked back to Sanjay

Sanjay: don’t worry, Eve can’t be angry for too long

Hira: is my Saree so ugly?

Sanjay smiled: not at all, you look great

Hira smiled and sat beside him and looked at the room as the maids cleaning it

Hira: Where are you going to sleep now? I don’t think you thought about that

Sanjay: I did, don’t worry (then he took a moment) Hira, I am sorry, I was there but I wasn’t there for you, my father hurt you and I couldn’t stop him

Hira: Oye (hey), it’s okay; don’t blame yourself, you didn’t know this will happen, how could you stop it

Sanjay: but you did, you knew with the exact second!!

Hira’s eyes widened: what?!!

Sanjay: the phone with your uncle the recent caller and before the countdown in the timer end, which means that the timer wasn’t for that, instead the countdown ended in a proper time for your disappearance, not to mention your fear Hira, your fear and how you wanted us to run, you knew the timer is for some kind of pain, your uncle was punishing you for something, isn’t he?

Hira stood and looked at Sanjay in disbelief, and shook her head and he stood as well

Hira: no, why are you...?

Sanjay: but if you knew it’s my father who will hurt you then you would have not be so worried on me, you didn’t know the source of your pain, didn’t you? Your uncle tortured you by the unknown pain and the seconds counting for it to begun, what a punishment!!

Hira shook her head: that...that is not true, my uncle is kind, it’s all coincidences (then she smiled a nervous smile) you miss movies I see, your imagination is so high

Sanjay frowned: it’s not an imagination Hira, my mother received a message with our address as well as the place of the spare key, who else but your uncle and Jagdev knows about this?

Hira covered her lips and felt her pulse in her chest getting higher 

Sanjay: he knew my family will act savage when it’s me in the equation and he must also knew about the interrogation from my uncle that happens to everyone nurse that take off my chains, he used us to make break you (then he frowned more) and I know what the cruel punishment was for Hira, it’s for thing he wants you to do for your family and you can’t do, isn’t it?

Hira shook her head nervously and tears crowded in her eyes, and he took a step closer to her and put his hands on her shoulders

Sanjay: what this cruel man wants you to do, Hira? Tell me so I can protect you

Hira frowned with teary eyes: he is not cruel and I don’t need protection, he cares for me, he is just angry and he has the right to.

Sanjay angrily: he doesn’t care for you, he is using you, how can’t you see that?

Hira angrily with teary eyes: you don’t know anything, if it wasn’t for him I would have been in an orphanage or in the street, I have no one, no one, you don’t know what happened to me after my parents died, the hellish days I lived before he give me a home and a kind woman that took care of me, my whole life I am dreaming of the day that I will get to meet him and feel the warmness of the fatherly hug again (then her tears flow more over her cheeks) if I believed you...if I believed (then she said in low tone) then I have no one

Sanjay hugged her and she hugged him back and he caressed her hair

Sanjay: okay, don’t cry (then he smiled) I am not even angry that you said you have no one when I am here in your life, it’s been like ...a day and half

Hira chuckled and tried to break the hug

Hira: thank you for the hug (then she wiped her eyes and smiled) I am okay now

Sanjay pulled her head again to his chest and her eyes widened

Sanjay: shush, don’t cry (and he patted on her head)  

Jude came with security and looked at the room and Sanjay with widened eyes

Jude: you...how...they got you out?

Sanjay: never mind, everything is fine now

And he walked towards the elevator with Hira in his arm, the security man looked at Jude and Jude looked at him back then he rushed behind Sanjay and held his arm, Sanjay stopped and frowned to him

Sanjay: I can’t fight now, can’t you see, Hira is crying!!

Hira looked at him confused as he patted on her head

Jude: I have to chain you back in the room so you won’t hurt yourself

And he signaled to the security who approached near Sanjay with chains but Sanjay said strictly and calmly

Sanjay: get these chains near me again and I will chain you in it  

The security stopped and Jude looked at Sanjay shocked and Hira smiled widely looking at Sanjay

Sanjay: I don’t want hurt myself anymore, Jude therefore I can’t let you hurt me or even disrespect me (then he patted on his broken shoulder’s arm) get well soon

And he walked towards the elevator that opened and Sonia got out of it and stopped

Sonia: Mr. Sanjay, Mrs. Marie asked me to open your old room since your current room...

Sanjay: I know, prepare the guest room for Hira, she will stay there from now on, we will take a walk in the garden till you are done

Sonia’s eyes widened: the guest room?!! For the nurse?

Sanjay frowned: does it look that I need a nurse?!!

Hira smiled and they entered the elevator with her still in his arm

The next morning 

Marie:...I don’t know Sonia if I should feel happy that my son is returning back to life or get scared of how much she have influence on him, something wrong with this girl, I don’t like her, I don’t like her at all

(And she took the last sip of her tea then put the cup on the table)

Sonia: you need more tea, ma’am

Marie looked at her with widened eyes then she looked around

Marie: no one else in the Kitchen Sonia, call me Marie, we are like sisters!

Sonia frowned: really?!! So now I am not your servant, because you need to talk, you know Marie ...I quit, I don’t know how much I can stand this

Marie angrily: it’s me who had enough of you (then she stood) quit and this time I won’t run behind you, I don’t need you, not as a friend or as a servant

And she walked out of the kitchen and hit Hira’s shoulder, Hira stopped and Marie looked at her with a frown

Hira: good morning, Mrs. Marie; how is Mr. Adarsh?

Marie just walked away and Hira looked at her going then she nodded

Hira: okay, we won’t pretend to like each other, I can do that

Then she entered the kitchen, closed the door and sat in front of Sonia with wide smile and Sonia wiped her single tear and frowned  

Sonia: make your own breakfast

Hira smiled: Sonia, I am not coming for breakfast, I came because I want to ask you couple of questions, you know the Singh Khatri, they keep their lips shut but us, the employees, we should stick together

Sonia: I am not going to answer anything for you

Hira said in low tone: uncle told me everything, Sonia, I am with you

Sonia frowned: uncle?!!! (Then her eyes widened) you mean Marie’s brother Johnny (then she frowned) what he told you is not true, I don’t love him and I hate Marie

Hira whispered: okay, that didn’t work well

Sonia: what?!!

 (Hira filled to herself a cup of tea)

Hira: I still have couple of questions that needs answer from you

Sonia: I said I won’t...

Hira smirked: you will answer because you don’t want me to tell Mr. Adarsh and Marie about the elevator’s password (then she whispered) insane Sanjay aka Insanju

Sonia gasped: Marie is right, you are evil 

Hira: a little ... (and she took a sip of tea)

Sonia smirked: anyway your blackmail came really late because first of all Mr. Sanjay named his dog Insanju, so the password will appear as if it’s the name of his dog...

Hira’s eyes widened: that is right (then she frowned) damn it, Sanjay

Sonia: second of all I already quit, so do whatever you want, I don’t give a damn

And she was about to stand and Hira held on her hand, and Sonia frowned to her

Hira: Please, please sit down, you are my only hope to understand this family (then she smiled) If I can’t blackmail you then I can bribe you, I have money

Sonia frowned: I don’t get bribes, I am respectable person

Hira sighed and looked down and Sonia looked at her with faint frown

Sonia: but we can be friends and friends gift their friends, I liked the fancy dress you came with when you came to the house, I think we are the same size

Hira smiled widely: okay, it’s yours friend

Sonia smiled: okay and as your friend I am obligated to answer your question, so ask

(And she filled her cup of tea and Hira leaned forward with wide smile)

Hira: what is between Sanjay and Uncle Adarsh, why Sanjay hates his father so much?

Sonia’s eyes widened: he hates Mr. Adarsh?!!! Do you think he has a hand in Sanjay’s depression?

Hira’s eyes widened: are you kidding me?!!! Don’t tell me you don’t know about what happened to him when he was 13

Sonia shook her head: I don’t, no one knows

Hira held her head: god, you don’t know anything

Sonia: who said that? I know a lot of things (then she whispered) for example I know Mr. Adarsh darkest secret; you won’t believe what he did

Hira swallowed: what he did?

Sonia smiled half a smile and whispered: his first wife” Eliana” mother of Eve, Viola and Jude is alive, not dead like he told them, she is alive

Hira’s eyes widened: what?!!

Sonia nodded: they are just divorced and he refuses to let her see the children, told the children that she died

Hira covered her lips: why would he do something horrible like that?

Sonia: nothing is like it seems Hira, you think he is horrible one but she is the one who cheated on him with another man

Hira gasped and Sonia nodded with wide smile

Sonia: I was there when she told him, she was like” I am in love with someone else, I always loved him, he is sick and his wish to live his last years with me, I want to be with him too, so bye, take care of our three kids on your own” and she left her children and Adarsh was completely broken

Hira covered her lips and Sonia nodded

Sonia: Eve was old enough to understand that her mother left them and don’t love them enough to stay with them, the twins were barely talking, he told them she loved them so much but went to heaven, two years ago I knew Eliana wanted to see her children and sent to him a letter at the old mansion, I found the letter in the trash, in pieces

Hira: oh my god, what happened next?

Sonia smiled: what happened next is unbelievable (then she leaned forward with wide smile) you see, the kids were a lot to take, so I gave him the suggestion to hire a nanny to help me, he asked me if there is someone I trust, I told him about the girl in my Village that is like a sister to me and need a job really bad because they are so poor and barely find bread and he agreed to hire her to take care of the three kids, guess who is the girl?!!

Hira smiled: don’t say

Sonia nodded: Marie back then was so innocent and so kind to the three kids and she fell for Mr. Adarsh instantly and her love was great to the limit that she cried every night on my shoulder that she is not good enough for him to notice her but he fell for her too and forgot about Eliana

Hira: but then the money made her change to the Marie we know today

Sonia shook her head: not at all, Marie was the same Marie for 14 years after, the three children adored her and she loved them so much and sometimes accidentally favored them over Sanjay in fear of becoming an Evil stepmother (then she smiled) also because Sanjay was a little devil, so smart and trouble maker, god he was so full of life, but out of sudden...

Hira impatiently: what happened to him?

Sonia sighed and shook head: we really don’t know, he stole his mother car the day before his birthday, like I said he was a trouble maker, he took his girl Nelly...

Hira frowned: his girl Nelly?!!

Sonia: yes she is the daughter of one of Adarsh’s work partners, the youngsters were totally fascinated with each other, that the two families arranged their marriage after college (then she chuckled) I remember the young devil fought with them that he don’t want to wait till college, you see the girl was so beautiful, blonde with green... 

Hira frowned: don’t care, what happened then?

Sonia: On Sanjay’s 13 birthdays, Sanjay asked his father to take him to buy his birthday gift which was a guitar I think, he went out with his father so excited, so happy and looking forward for the great party but hours passed and they didn’t come to the party then Mr. Adarsh called us and told us that Sanjay fell out of the driving car and in the hospital with some broken bones

Hira’s eyes widened: HE THREW HIMSELF

Sonia: that is what we knew later and when he healed enough to stand he tried to throw himself off the hospital’s building and he didn’t stop trying to end his life since

Hira put her hand on her chest: Sanjay

Sonia: what happened to our boy, he is not saying anything and no one able to do anything for him, that is when Marie changed to the Marie you know today and we told everyone that Sanjay left to study in another country, moved to another mansion with a third floor and hid Sanjay in it; and years passed we are in the same torture (then she smiled) till you came and changed the life we are living for years, in a day and half!!

Meanwhile

Marie frowned: ungrateful Sonia

Marie looked at the closed kitchen with a frown then she shook her head

Marie: no, no I had enough

And walked to the living room and looked around then she Lighted a cigarette

Marie: I NEED TEA, NOW

The main door of the mansion opened and Johnny entered with wide smile and threw his suitcase on the floor and Marie nervously put out the cigarette fast

Johnny: look who came to ruin your day   

Marie smiled widely: OH, my sweetie

And she rushed to him and hugged him and he raised her off the floor in the hug

Johnny: I missed you sis (then he broke the hug) so I decided to spend few weeks with you and not only me, those too

(Then he got out of his pocket four bars of white chocolate and she chuckled)

Marie: oh those are just couple of days snacks (then she sighed) as if you feel how much I need you, Johnny

Johnny: I am here for you Marie, tell me

She held his hand and they walked towards the couch, he looked at the cigarette and raised his eyebrow as they sat

Johnny: you returned to smoke again?!!!

Marie: no, it’s Hira’s;  you can’t imagine how this girl is driving me crazy, I hate her and what I hate more than her, is that she was able to win Sanjay and Adarsh in a day and half, can you believe it!! They trust her and I am the bad guy!!!

Johnny: a day and half!!!! That is ridiculous

Hira got out of the kitchen then she smiled widely and ran to him 

Hira: UNCLE JOHNNY

Johnny smiled widely: gummy bear

Marie frowned: what?!!

He hugged her and twirled with her then he looked at shocked Marie and his smile vanished

Johnny: it took her couple of hours with me, she is adorable

Marie: ARRRGH

Sonia got out of the kitchen with her handbag and Johnny broke the hug with Hira and brushed his mustache

Johnny: good morning Sonia

Sonia strictly: good morning (then she frowned) Mrs. Singh Khatri, I will bring few servant to help me pack and I expect the cheque of my payment before the end of the week, thank you

Johnny: what?!!! You quit again?!!

Sonia: yes, good bye

And she walked out and Marie frowned and looked the other way but for her surprise Johnny frowned and picked his suitcase

Johnny: good bye Marie

Marie’s eyes widened: I thought you missed me!!

Johnny frowned: not that much

And he walked towards the door but then her stopped, turned back and pulled the chocolate bars from Marie’s hand and Marie gasped

Johnny: you don’t deserve them

And he walked out and Marie rushed behind him

Marie: wait, at least leave the chocolates

Hira chuckled but for her surprise she found a hand wrapping around her waist and carrying her, she gasped and looked behind her and chuckled seeing its Sanjay

Sanjay: good morning

Hira chuckled: put me down

Sanjay put her down and she smiled, and looked at him from head to toes, he was wearing a black shirt and blue jeans, and in his hand car keys 

Hira: you look so great

Sanjay: we are going out, I have a surprise for you and by the way your phone is with me

Hira frowned: why is my phone with you?

Viola descended the stairs fast and smiled widely and waved...

Hira frowned: and why is she so happy?

Sanjay: you will know, come with me

Viola: I will come too

And she rushed to the gate and Hira looked at Sanjay and he held her hand and ran with her out

Few hours later

Hira nervously stood in front of a gate in the airport and looked at Sanjay and Viola with widened eyes

Hira: okay, I am now very nervous

Sanjay: okay, I guess I have to tell you, your phone rang and kept ringing and ringing and Viola couldn’t sleep

Viola smiled widely: I couldn’t sleep

Sanjay: so she took the phone to me and we decided to just take the call for you

Hira frowned: what?!!!

Sanjay: and it was someone speaking in Spanish and I don’t know Spanish...

Viola: but I know Spanish so he gave me the phone

Sanjay smiled widely: and it’s Mateo, your carino (sweetheart), he is coming

Hira eyes widened and Viola chuckled and shook her head

Viola: your reaction is priceless

Hira: Sanjay, do you know what carino means in Spanish?

Sanjay’s smile vanished: Viola said it means brother!!!

Hira covered her lips and Viola chuckled and Sanjay frowned

Sanjay: what is so funny? What does carino means?

Mateo: HIRA

Hira turned and Sanjay frowned looking at Mateo, who was thin tall Young man with tall dark black hair, black leather pants and vest , white shirt that unbutton till his belly button and big tattoo for a cross over his chest

Hira smiled widely: CARINO

And she ran to Mateo and Sanjay ran to a small book stand in the airport and pulled from the shelf a Spanish dictionary

Viola held her smile and went to Mateo and he broke the hug with Hira

Viola: Hola, Mateo (then she said in Spanish) we spoke on the phone

Mateo smiled widely: Si, Hola Viola  

Hira looked at Sanjay as he flipping the pages then his eyes widened looking at her

Mateo in Spanish: I missed you my beautiful Hira, I have a surprise for you but a kiss first

And he held her hair and kissed her, Hira’s eyes widened and tried to break the kiss but a punch from Sanjay on Mateo’s cheek was enough to do that for her, she screamed when she saw Mateo on the floor and Sanjay over him throwing punches all over Mateo’s face
