Upon awakening, she was gasping for air and drenched in sweat. Her heart was pounding so hard, that she felt like she couldn't breathe. “Dammit,” she uttered, rising to her feet and entering the shower. She let the water cascade over her body, her hand unconsciously tracing the bite mark on her skin, a physical reminder that the events of that night were not just a dream. It resembled a tattoo of a wolf, half animal and half crystal.
She checked if the doors and windows were locked, then glanced at the clock. It was 2 am. “Jeez, I'd better get some sleep. It's going to be a long day,” she said to herself.
The following day, Nadia arrived with Hazel and a striking man who seemed to have come straight from a fashion magazine. His name was Rico, and he was Bailey's grandfather's beta and best friend. Nadia introduced him and Hazel to Chaya, who had to prepare various dishes for them to select from.
They nodded in agreement, the aroma of the food was mouthwatering. "It looks and smells amazing!", they exclaimed. She smiled and placed the dishes they wanted on the side. "Thank you!", she said.
The women were amazed by Rico's appetite and his appearance despite his large consumption. “Are you sure you can handle more?” one of them asked with a raised eyebrow. He smiled in response and said, “Hey, I'm a big guy.” His comment made her mouth drop open in surprise, and he laughed in amusement.
He couldn't shake the belief that the scent on her was Bailey's. Even after exploring all the possible explanations, he was unable to fathom how she came to have his scent. After they parted ways, he kept a watchful eye on her, following as she tended to other clients before moving on to the aftercare.
“Mommy!” She gave them a tight hug. “Look what we made for you.” She looked at them expectantly. “Out with it.” Her voice was stern.
Reed glanced at his brothers before speaking. “We got into a fight with those new boys. They were bullying the others, and we felt like we had no other choice.”
At that moment, the teacher arrived and verified that the children were simply protecting themselves and their peers. As they departed and returned home, she was reminded of the importance of instilling in her sons a sense of responsibility to defend the vulnerable and never to coerce or bully others into doing something they didn't want to do. She recognized that they possessed distinctive abilities and intellect that commanded admiration, like that of kings.
