I watched Ken stagger back. His hand flew up to his cheek, clutching the spot where I had just struck him. Shock widened his eyes until they looked like they might pop out of his head. He looked at me as if he were seeing a stranger for the very first time. He opened his mouth to speak, likely to shout at me or threaten me, but I did not give him the chance. I cut him off before he could say a single word.
“That slap was nothing, Ken,” I said. My voice was cold and sharp, like a winter breeze. “If I really wanted to hit you, I would do it much harder. I would make sure you did not get back up so easily.”
