The sun, my worst enemy

443 Words
Zeran kept a fearful eye on the slowly lightening sky, his heart pounding as he dodged bullets and people, he darted back towards the sand dune, knowing that for now, trying to get back into camp without getting caught was useless. The boy darted off into the sands, praying that he would find a cave to hide in until nightfall. He could hear a veichle following him but it was easy for him to hide from it, one good jump 5 feet down a 20 foot dune and he was well hidden behind a rock with no footprints to lead the way to his hidingspot. Once behind a rock he continued moving in that direction, escaping the humans who though Vampires were too stupid to ever think strategically. Zeran hissed softly in pain as a ray of sunlight caught his hand and instantly sent his skin into bubbling blisters, he jerked it away at top speed, clutching it to his chest as the bubbling slowly slowed down but never really went away. It would take over a week to heal this burn, any longer in the sun and the burn would of gone much deeper and would of been much harder to heal, not to mention more damaging and painful. Most people with normal skin wouldnt of understood the Vampire's need to stay out of the sunshine, perhaps if they had a sever allergy they may understand. Pure blooded Vampires lacked a certain element in their body, one that in humans helped them resist the suns effects and instead of being burned, got a tan. Since a Vampire'd body didnt produce this element naturally they needed to absorb something that contained that that element in high doses, they had tried hundreds of things, until they found one that worked. Traditionally, to survive the suns light Vampires had fed on Hell Fruit, these fruits contained elemental magic that when mixed with the Vampires own, produced a strong sun resistant blood. Unfortunately there wernt many of these trees on this new planet that they had come to call their own, the ones that were here were guarded over fiercely by the small Covens that had found them. The Hell Fruits wernt hoarded by any means, they were given to every Vampire that asked for them however as there were so few trees there was also a limited number of fruit they could produce. Over time their yields had been increased, but still they didnt produce enough to feed every vampire and give them the life saving magic. It was often saved for children and the younger Vampires. Sadly however, Zeran was no longer a child.
