The utter hall went silent, and for a moment, everyone's eyes were on Alpha Cyrus.
I gasped. Did he just—
"ONE BILLION DOLLARS FOR NUMBER SEVEN, AQUILLA CALLIOPE, BY THE ONE AND ONLY ALPHA KING OF DEVAS! CONGRATULATIONS!"
My jaw dropped as I felt a sudden rush from my toes reaching up to my head. It's as if I am about to fall to my knees in disbelief and shock.
Cyrus? Why did he do that?
Momentarily, Cyrus's head dropped to the floor. Everyone went in his direction and his guards immediately took him out. He's drunk.
"This auction calls for an end as the Alpha King has already placed his bid. Congratulations to Aquilla Calliope! After a few days, the Alpha King will come and fetch you to your abode. Congratulations to everyone!"
I was still flabbergasted by what just happened. Am I dreaming? Aren't all of these part of my hallucinations?
"Hey, Aquilla, are you okay?" I heard Mom's voice from my right. I turned to her and saw dad and Everlee behind. Everlee isn't looking at me, but rather, at the guards who were taking Cyrus out of this large hall.
I nodded my head and smiled. "Is this all real?" I asked.
Mom smiled with tears forming in her eyes. She nodded her head and pulled me for a hug. Dad joined the hug—but Everlee just glared at me.
I never saw her glare at anyone before. At first, I thought what I was seeing wasn't real, but she was really looking at me with contempt. Why is she being so petty? Is it because of Cyrus?
I rolled my eyes and buried my head in Mom's shoulder. I cried as I thought about what was going to happen a few days later. I can finally bring my family out of poverty.
...
"You probably cheated during the auction, huh?" my bratty cousin Candice said as I was fixing my clothes in my room.
I took a deep breath and looked at her with disbelief and a sluggish position. "Really?" I asked.
She rolled her eyes at me and continued licking her strawberry-flavored lollipop, gliding it all over her lips covered in a hundred-layer lipgloss.
"You're so disgusting. Could you please leave my room? Why are you here anyway?" I said in frustration as I finished placing the last batch of clothes inside my rusty luggage. It isn't that bad, though.
"I won't leave until the Alpha King comes and fetches you here. Maybe he just didn't see me quite well during the auction. Who knows he might change his mind and take me instead of you?"
This blithering brat.
I stood up and pulled out my luggage. I didn't bring many of my things because I would still come back home every once in a while. I'm going to miss my family a lot. A bit later, we heard a knock on the main door downstairs.
Candice and I looked at each other. She took her lollipop out of her big mouth and we immediately rushed downstairs. Halfway down, I realized I had forgotten my luggage, so I went back to my room and frowned as I carried it. It's too heavy!
"Need help?"
I raised my head and saw Everlee standing in front of me. Her hands were already gripping the handle of my luggage. I missed her voice. I missed how she asks me if I need her help.
Everlee and I always had petty fights and arguments, but this recent misunderstanding we had was the worst. I will never forget how she glared at me during the auction as if I didn't deserve to be with Cyrus. However, I couldn't help but wonder if Cyrus really still has feelings for Everlee. I know for sure that my sister loves him. We both want the same man.
She smiled at me with her usual bright smile. She's always pretty and blooming, and she'll always be my sister, no matter how cruel this world gets.
I smiled back at her and nodded my head. We ended up carrying my luggage together with small giggles and trips as we went downstairs.
As much as I wanted to ask Everlee more details about her relationship with Cyrus before, I couldn't. Maybe because I don't want her to remember those moments, or probably just because I don't want to feel hurt.
I palpably know that Cyrus won't make me his Luna. The chances aren't zero because I'm finally living in the royal castle with him; however, there are lots of other better women out there than me. I bet he wouldn't even recognize that I was the lady he bought at the auction. If I end up being his maid just like what happened to all the other omegas before, it would be fine, as long as I get enough money to take my family out of this village of poverty. I don't want them to experience hardship anymore just because we're omegas.
As we arrived at the main door, I saw an approximately thirty-five-year-old woman standing there in a very fancy, floral, blue dress. I can see the disgust on her face as she peered at our house and at the dirty ground. She's pretty, yeah, but too much foundation is covering her face. Even her eyeshadows are thick and the colors don't even match. Her cheek is too red and her plum lipstick is even worse than Candice's. She frowned and fixed her blonde curly hair as she looked in my direction.
I searched my eyes behind the woman to look for Cyrus. I thought he would be the one fetching me here?
"Tsk. Cyrus ain't here to pick you up. My bad. Maybe he regretted the auction as soon as he got sober," Candice muttered beside me.
I just ignored her. I was about to raise my hand and wave hello, but I instantly arched a brow as the fancy woman signaled Everlee to come to her. The woman's frowning face turned into a delighted one as soon as she saw Everlee.
"Hi, Madame Butterfly," Everlee greeted and respectfully bowed down as she stepped closer to the woman.
"Goodness gracious heavens! You look so lovely as ever, my dear Everlee! Come with me now and I will take you to your lover," the woman uttered.
Everlee glanced at me and at mom, then back to that woman. "Sorry, Madame Butterfly, I am not the omega Cyrus bidded for," Everlee calmly claimed.
Madame Butterfly's face morphed back into a frown and disappointment. She knows about Everlee and Cyrus? Did Everlee meet this woman before?
Knowing Everlee, a shy rose on whichever bee lands on her, she can't meet nobles and those who are of high status. I wouldn't even doubt it because she dated the Alpha King behind my back.
I awkwardly looked at Madame Butterfly and she tried to smile at me; however, bitterly. I couldn't help but wonder if Butterfly is really her name.
"Not bad." I heard her mumble.
Does she mean I look ugly but not very ugly?
"All right. I ask for your permission, Mr. and Mrs. Calliope, to take your lovely daughter with me. The Alpha King wasn't able to fetch you here himself because, you know," she stops and chuckles, "he's a very busy body."
Yeah. Who am I to be so important to be fetched here anyway? Maybe if it was Everlee, Cyrus would have come here himself.
"Yes, Madame. Please take her with you," Mom replied happily. How can she be so happy knowing that I won't live with them anymore?
"Great." Madame Butterfly looked back at me and peered at me from head to toe, slightly judging my appearance. She sighs. "What's your name again?"
"I'm Aquilla. Aquilla Calliope," I calmly replied without trying to show a hint of annoyance. I feel so uncomfortable with a noble lady talking to me and judging my whole existence.
"Okay, Aquilla. I just want to remind you that the Alpha King won't make you his Luna. He is in love with someone else," Madame Butterfly said and took a glance at Everlee behind me, "so you will work in the royal castle and do whatever he tells you to do."
I nodded my head. "Yes. I am not expecting anything like that anyway. I just want to give my family a better life."
Madame Butterfly examines me for a moment and sighs.
"Okay. Right there is the royal chauffeur. He will bring us to the royal castle and he will be your personal chaperone whenever the Alpha King allows you to go outside."
She pointed at a handsome and demure man standing on the road with a black, long, shiny, and luxurious car standing still behind him. He is wearing a formal and clean suit with his jet-black hair in a pretty nice cut. I assume he is in his twenties already. We made eye contact for a moment. He smiled, but I immediately diverted my eyes away.
His eyes are dark and shaped like almonds. When he smiled, he showed his white teeth and deep dimples. He also has a great body, as his suit shows the outlines of his muscles. Many girls are probably gawking over this man. I didn't know royal chaperones would look this good. All my life, I only thought Cyrus was the only good-looking man in the whole of Devas, but now, maybe that thought has changed.
Madame Butterfly walked towards me and moved her face closer to my left ear. "You aren't allowed to fall for that chaperone, hm? Don't you even dare," she warned.
I nodded my head.
After that, I looked at Mom, Dad, Everlee, and Candice. I can't believe I won't see them every day anymore.
"I'll get going. I promise, if I get a break and if they allow me to go outside, I will visit them at home. For now, I'll work hard and get you a better place to live in," I said in a brittle voice. I don't want to be melodramatic right now.
Mom walked towards me and cupped my face. Her eyes are teary. "You don't have to worry about us too much, Aquilla. I want you to have a better life. Enjoy it, hmkay?"
We embraced. Dad and Everlee joined us. Candice just looked at us and turned her back soon after because she was also about to cry.
Everlee pulled a silver floral bracelet from the pocket of her skirt and placed it on my left wrist. "Don't lose that," she mumbled. "That is to remind you that no matter what, I'll still be your older sister who loves you more than anything else."
I smiled as I stared at the bracelet on my wrist. It perfectly suited me. I love it.
For the last time, I hugged Everlee. I could hear her soft sniffles.
"Goodbye, everyone."
As I turned my back on them, tears started to storm off my face. I immediately wiped those tears away and took a deep breath.
This is it. My life is finally starting. I'm finally going to live as an independent adult.
The chauffeur opened the door of the car while looking at me with a smirk. I awkwardly roamed my eyes away as I saw him looking at me. What's with his smirk and why is he looking at me like that?
Madame Butterfly pushed me to the side for her to enter the car first. This woman is really getting on my nerves. I can clearly sense that she isn't a werewolf but a human. Doesn't she know that I can rip her skin right now if I want to?
But of course, I wouldn't do that. Devas strictly prohibit violence, especially against humans residing here. The Alpha King believes that violence will only lead to no good. Just in case violence is needed, it only happens when an intruder attacks Devas.
"Pleasure to meet you, Miss Guerilla," the chauffer's deep and sweet voice traveled to both my ears, making me halt for a moment. His voice made the tiny sparse hair on my nape stand up.
"Thanks. My name is Aquilla, not Guerilla, by the way," I corrected him.
"Okay. I guess I'm going to see you often soon. I am Kieran Edevane—"
"DOUBLE TIME, PEOPLE! The Alpha King is waiting!" Madame Butterfly's voice screeched.
I immediately went inside the car as the voice of the chauffeur still remained in my head. What on earth was that? Why did it feel like he was trying to flirt with me?
Or am I just assuming things?
Of course, I am. He wouldn't possibly do that.
But despite his handsomeness and gentleness, he gives me an uncanny vibe. I can't sense him. I couldn't sense what kind of creature he is.
