Lucy POV
Indigo had not stopped wagging her tail in my head since I decided to give Sawyer a chance. She was all ready to mate with him and mark him, claiming him as officially ours, but I needed to get to know him first. I needed to be sure that he was not just after power and that he was not secretly planning to try to take the Alpha title away from me. He seemed like a good person, but he could always be acting.
After Lexa and I had come into my dad’s office and Sawyer and I cleared the air, my father declared that he wanted to have an official dinner to celebrate after the meeting with the other Alphas that had yet to arrive. I didn’t think it was a good idea to go broadcasting that I had found my mate because I did not want the Elder Council to know until I was sure about Sawyer, but dad had already mindlinked my mother and got her all excited. Being the event-planning Luna that she was, she had already started organizing everything, so there was no going back now.
Since there were still a few hours before the other Alphas from the nearby packs would arrive, my father suggested that Sawyer and I take some time to get to know each other better. Lexa backed him up on it, saying what a good idea it was, the traitor. I knew it was just because she wanted to gossip about it to my dad. I couldn’t help but feel excited to get to know more about Sawyer though, and I must admit, the pure joy on his face at the mention of spending time with me made my heartbeat about ten times faster than normal.
Even though I didn’t train, I was still in ratty clothes and probably smelled bad from all the running and lying on the ground that I did. I requested a few minutes to shower and change. Lexa wanted to come with me, but I knew she would want to plaster me in make-up and perfume, both of which I hated to wear. Plus, I wanted her to vibe up with Sawyer a little bit, so I instead suggested that she give him a tour. Lexa jumped all over that idea because she insisted that, as my best friend and future Beta, she needed to be tight with my mate. It would provide a chance for them to bond without the pressure of me being present. I swear that girl could rationalize anything.
Currently, I was standing in my closet wearing nothing but a towel trying to decide what to wear. After trying on about ten different outfits, I went with a simple a-line dress that was covered in flowers and had a sweetheart neckline.
You look good girl! Indi exclaimed in my head. Mate will love the dress!
I shook my head and chastised her, I am not dressing cute for Sawyer. I am dressing nicely because I will be attending my father’s meeting with the other Alphas and I need to look presentable as the future Alpha. I have a reputation to uphold. I had just met the guy, I couldn’t start sacrificing all my values and standards for him.
You just keep telling yourself that. She responded with lots of sass.
I knew responding would just encourage her more, so I remained quiet and headed back downstairs to hunt down Lexa and Sawyer. I should have realized that it was very easy to find my mate, all I had to do was think about him and focus on finding his scent. Once I had a whiff of it, following it was easy peasy.
Sawyer and Lexa were right outside the packhouse, sitting on one of the porch swings just talking. Sawyer was laughing at something Lexa had said, and I couldn’t stop the slight growl of jealousy and possessiveness that slipped from my mouth. Luckily, I was far away enough that they did not hear it. I took advantage of this and checked out my mate. He was very attractive, I had to admit. He was also very strong, which made him a good partner for an Alpha. I just hoped his brains matched his brawns.
“Luc-there you are!” Lexa exclaimed, revealing my presence. Sawyer turned slightly so that he was fully facing me and his eyes brightened as he took in my appearance. Before I knew what was happening, he was rushing toward me. He lifted me in his arms and spun me around. I couldn’t help the girlish giggle that escaped from my lips.
“If I haven’t told you yet, you are absolutely beautiful. If I have told you, I would like to reiterate my previous statement.” Sawyer said with adoration as he sat me back on the ground and took my hand in his. My face immediately turned beet red, as I had never thought of myself as beautiful before and did not know how to respond to the compliment. Indi was purring contently in my head.
“I thought maybe we could take a walk and I could show you whatever Lexa didn’t show you during the tour. Plus, there is a favorite spot of mine that I know for a fact she did not show you because she knew I would want to. We still have about two hours to kill before the other Alphas start arriving and the meeting begins. Sound good?” I asked him, giving him a smile as I spoke.
“Sounds perfect baby. Anything you want to show me or do, I’m down. I just want to spend time with you.” Sawyer replied, squeezing my hand.
I blushed again at the nickname and said, “Let’s go!”.
As we started walking off back toward the packhouse, Lexa called out “Have fun! Don’t have too much fun though-don’t want you missing the important meeting!” I rolled my eyes at her comment, deciding to believe she was joking and not losing faith in my ability to be Alpha just because I had found my mate…
________
Lexa POV
I watched as Lucy and Sawyer strolled farther into the distance, hand-in-hand. As I watched them, I couldn’t help but feel a little sad and jealous because I hadn’t found my mate either yet. Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally happy for my girl and Sawyer is a great match for her, but I couldn’t help longing for my own mate.
I sighed and sat down on the nearest bench, I hope I hadn’t offended Luc. I was just joking, I knew they weren’t about to go into the woods to have s*x or anything, they probably wouldn’t even kiss. She was so stressed about looking like the perfect Alpha because the sexist pigs on the council were convinced that, because she was a woman, she was unfit to lead our pack. Lucy was an excellent leader, and she had only been training for this since she was born.
Sighing once more, I headed towards Fred’s office. Neither Lucy nor I knew why all the other Alphas of surrounding packs from the nearby area were coming. While Lucy was busy with Sawyer, I figured I’d talk to Fred and get the scoop so I could fill her in before the meeting. After all, a Beta should support her Alpha…
