The raft turned around toward the open lake. Keesha followed the young woman’s example and helped change the course with her kicking. Arrow stopped rowing until we knew where we were going, and I didn’t bother picking up my oar. I caught a glimpse of something in the mist out there and squinted. Keesha squealed. Arrow slapped me on the shoulder. “It’s an island,” Keesha said, peeking up over the side of the raft. Even though Arrow hadn’t dropped his oar or ducked when the birds swooped, he shouldn’t have laughed at me. They were scary. He still grinned, not funny.
