Chapter 27The doorbell chiming perked Oscar’s ear. He hadn’t heard it in a while, not since Radhi. Oscar wondered how he was doing, hopefully, good. A muffled voice somehow made its way through the bedroom door. A woman, but it didn’t sound like the nurse. He got up from the bed, where he’d lately spent too much time, and went to the door for a listen. He put his ear against it. “How is he?” the woman asked. He didn’t recognize her, though she sounded strangely familiar. “He seems fine,” the nurse said. “Do you want to see him?” “That’s why I came, but I’m not sure.” “You’d better do it now if you’re going to. We’re leaving for Belize tomorrow—unless you want to come with us.” “No, I have to stay. Will he be comfortable there, where you’re taking him? This house is his home.” “That
