Chapter One
Eva’s POV
I make my way to my father’s office with breakfast and coffee. Not something I usually do, but Mom asked me to keep an eye on him. People are talking and she is getting worried.
I lift my hand to knock on the door as it opens.
“Good morning Beta Miles.” I smile.
“Morning Eva.” He huffs with a tired and defeated look.
I walk over to my father’s desk and place his breakfast down along with the steaming coffee. I made his favorite homemade pancakes with warm spiced apples in between each layer topped with whipped cream and drizzled with caramel syrup. It’s a breakfast he could never resist. Until now that is.
He looks up from the mountain of papers consuming his giant desk. He gives me a forced smile that doesn’t quite reach his tired crystal blue eyes. I noticed his once medium brown hair is now peppered. His once broad and strong shoulders look weak as he is slouching in his oversized chair. Gravity is not being nice to the dark bags under his eyes. I feel as though he has aged years overnight.
“Thank you Dear. I am glad you are hear.” He softly says to me. “I was wondering if you had a moment to discuss some things with me?” He questions politely. Too politely. I nod afraid of what’s to come.
“Beta Miles, while I discuss important matters with Eva, I will need you to take care of the patrol schedule for this week. Double up on security. I don’t want the greedy Alpha’s of neighboring packs getting any ideas.” My father’s orders make me feel even more uneasy. I can feel the anxiety radiating off of him while we sit in silence as Beta Miles closes the door on his way out.
“Mom is worried about you. What’s going on Dad?” I question in a low voice.
He looks at me for a moment and puts his head down. “I am not getting any younger my girl. You know this. It is time we consider who may take my place as Alpha of Dark Moon.”
I feel my father’s large office closing in on me. I knew this day would come but I did not expect it so soon.
His father was Alpha before him and taught him to be a strong and fierce Alpha and warrior. I know, because of how close my dad was with his father, it was disappointing to only have daughters. Being the oldest of 4 sisters has had its challenges, but I was always a daddy girl. He taught me everything about our pack from the ground up, trained me to be the best warrior in our nine-hundred member pack, and allowed me to take over Luna duties after seeing mother had no interest in the job.
My mother came from a close knit family. My grandfather was the well respected head warrior of our pack and always protected his only daughter. He showered her with all the materialistic things he could while giving her a good life away from the pack. My uncles were never so lucky. He never wanted my mother to experience the dangers of being a warrior and the stress of the pack after losing his oldest son in a war over territory. She was happy with her human like life. My father’s Alpha ceremony was one of the few times she had ever been to the pack house. That evening, they mated. My mother was not excited about her new Luna position. She wanted an average worry free life full of luxurious things. The pressure of being Luna was too much for her. She buckled. At that time, I was only fifteen. Despite my young age, I took over all Luna duties and learned how to work with and accommodate our pack.
“Eva, we need to start thinking to the future. We need to find someone who will carry the Alpha title with pride and lead us boldly into the future. I would like a list of prospects to look over this evening.” He explains.
“Of course Father.” I say in a low tone. He nods in dismissal and I walk over to the door in desperate need of fresh air.
Alpha Kane’s POV
Eva stands from her chair in response to my nod of dismissal. I watch as her normally lively emerald green eyes go dark. Her deep olive skin looks pale. Her warm burgundy hair glistens in the natural light that is beaming through the large floor the ceiling windows behind me. I can see hints of purple showing through as she is walking to the door. I am flooded with the memory of the first time she shifted.
Eva was only 15. She was afraid of the pain that would come along with her bones breaking to contort into her wolf for the first time. She was so prideful and strong even from a young age. I knew she didn’t want anyone see her appear weak. Seeing how scared she was, I took deep into the woods to a small clearing I disappeared to often to clear my head. Eva stepped behind the a large tree to remove her clothes and attempt to shift. I heard a gut wrenching cry followed by a scream that sent chills down my spine. Just then, I see an enormous solid gray wolf walk out and towards me. As Alpha, I was always the largest wolf in the pack but her wolf is looking down at me even as I am in my wolf form. Her wolf had the most mysterious emerald purple eyes. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. So many emotions hit me all at once. I was so proud yet so fearful of her future. As she became comfortable with her wolf in a few short minutes, her strong aurora and commanding eyes forced me to lower my head. In that moment, my fears had been confirmed. I knew what she was destined for.
I began weakening slowly since then and I am finally at my end. Ten slow years of strength and power withering away could have killed me. I only powered through because she needed me as a father and teacher. She needed to learn everything she possibly could and build mental and physical strength before everyone realized who she truly is.
