Chapter 3: The Complications

1553 Words
Ginny was rooted to the spot. She had just stood up for no known reason, and her friends were looking at her strangely. Leela waved a small wave at Ginny and then sat down, her bright red hair flowing down the front of her suit as she turned to talk to her Beta. Ginny excused herself and walked to the table for a drink. The ceremony was just about to start and there was nothing she could do about it. It was forbidden to interrupt an Alpha ceremony. Bri was howling with pleasure in her head, but Ginny was confused. Sure, she had heard of same s*x mates before, but weren't the people who ended up in them typically gay their whole lives? Ginny had never really thought about anyone but Maxim her whole life. Just then she remembered Maxim and sighed in frustration. how on earth was she going to tell him he wasn't her mate? Ginny finished getting her drink and slunk back to the table of friends. Maxim raised his eyebrows and gave her a look, but the ceremony started right after she sat down, so he didn't have time to ask any questions, much to Ginny's relief. Everyone's eyes were on the stage, so Ginny didn't feel bad for staring at Leela. She couldn't seem to get enough of looking at her. She wasn't just beautiful. she looked like a goddess. Her skin was golden with a slight tan and her eyes were bright blue like the sky. She had such strong looking hands. Ginny couldn't get enough of her hands. The ceremony started with Christophe giving his big speech about passing on the pack. Ginny had already heard it a million times this past week. she had helped him practice it and he was speaking it word for word. Leela looked bored, but no matter how much Ginny was looking at her, she didn't return her gaze. Ginny began to convince herself that Leela waving at her must have been a mistake. Why wasn't she looking this way? Had she felt the mating bond too? Ginny's head began to spin. She had wanted the wait for her mate to be over, but now that it was she didn't feel any reassurance. What if Leela didn't want her? After all, she was an abandoned pup with no background to speak of. Sure, Alpha Christophe had adopted her, but that didn't magically give her alpha blood. For all she knew she was an omega nobody. Alpha Christophe's speech went on a bit longer and then he stood back from the podium a bit to let Griffin come up beside him. They took a ceremonial knife and each cut their own palm. An elder came up between them and held their hands together as they all said a chant for passing on the Alpha title. Christophe and the elder stepped back and bowed to Alpha Griffin as he stood there beaming. Ginny remembered when he had first started his alpha training. She was only eight at the time, and he was ten. They had spent all of their time together since they were pups. Griffin was suddenly gone every morning, receiving special training. Ginny was at school waiting to be picked up, one day, when some other wolves had begun teasing her for not having a mother. She was so small at the time and there were too many other kids ganging up on her. She knew she didn't stand a chance so she started to cry, which only fueled the bullies more. Suddenly they stopped laughing and one of the bullies went flying. When Ginny looked up, Griffin was standing infront of her with Maxim. They were both baring their teeth at the group of bullies and yelling. The bullies ran off and Griffin helped his sister to her feet. "No one gets bullied in my pack." Griffin had said. Even at ten he had been such a great guy. Defender of the weak. Ginny smiled with Alpha Griffin as he stood at the podium, proud to be the alpha of such a great pack. Everyone clapped and cheered. Even Leela had a smile on her face, Ginny noted. After the applause, Alpha Griffin gave a short but sweet speech about taking on the dreams and wishes of The Night Flox Pack. He wrapped up the speech by hoping that everyone would enjoy the food without further delay. Everyone laughed and dug in. Now that all eyes were not on the stage, it was harder to sneak glances at Leela. Ginny didn't need anyone finding out until she knew what to do about her dilemma. She might be the mate to the most powerful Alpha around, but she was a nobody. She was almost certain to be rejected. If that were the case, she didn't want it to happen in front of everyone here. You are assuming the absolute worst here, Ginny. Bri complained. Have you considered that she might just be waiting for the right moment herself? Ginny ignored Bri. She was getting gloomier by the moment. There was no way someone as amazing as Leela would think twice about rejecting a nobody like her. Ginny's friends tried to keep up conversation, but Ginny was too distracted. Maxim noticed, but try as he might he couldn't seem to lift her spirits. He caught her looking over at the head table here and there, but he couldn't tell what or who was distracting her so. The meal finally ended and the people on the stage came down to greet some of the guests. Ginny ran up to Griffin and gave him a big hug. "I'm so proud of you, big brother!" She exclaimed. She really was happy for him, despite her own issues. Griffin ruffled her hair, lovingly. "You did a fantastic job putting this all together, sis. I couldn't have done it without you." He said, full of cheer. Christophe and Brenda came and gave the siblings a hug as well. Christophe was relieved to be able to watch and guide from the sidelines from now on. Griffin had waited until he was almost 24 to take over. Christophe had held the pack together for long enough. "Now we just need to find our mates, eh frog?" Griffin laughed, messing up Ginny's hair further. He had called her that since she was little because of her green eyes and how she always jumped all over him as a kid. "Yeah, about that...." Ginny started. She wanted to look over at Leela, but wasn't sure where to begin with explaining. Maxim came in from behind hauled Ginny to him by her waist. "You'll only have to wait another week for at least one of you to find their mate." He teased, holding Ginny close to him. It didn't make Ginny blush this time. It was kind of annoying and possessive. Funny what an hour can change. Ginny tried to gently pry herself out of Maxim's arms, but he just held on firmer. She glanced over to the side and saw Leela had already been surrounded by Alphas and fans. Leela was tall enough, though, she could still see Griffin and Ginny's group. When Ginny looked over she caught Leela looking over at her. Leela made a face like she had just smelled something that bothered her, and then she looked away. She's disgusted, Ginny thought, horror struck. Wouldn't you be? Her mate is in someone else's arms. Bri growled, equally disgusted. Ginny grew angry. I'm not trying to be in his arms. I am trying to get out, as a matter of fact. Ginny growled back. She didn't like Bri's sudden attitude. Try harder, Bri countered. Ginny suddenly broke out of Maxim's arms and stepped away. "I'm sorry. If you will excuse me, I have to make sure the preparations for tomorrow are all taken care of." Ginny said as she walked away from her friends and family. Rachel called after her, but Ginny kept marching. Ginny didn't have anything to check on, so she went up to her room. She angrily unzipped her dress and threw it on the floor on her way to the bathroom. She started the shower and took off her matching black lacey bra and panty set. She had kind of hoped to bring Maxim back to her room after the ceremony and had dressed accordingly. She had really thought he was her mate. She had genuinely been attracted to him. To him!? How could things turn around so quickly. Ginny stepped into the shower and let the water rinse away her stress. She ran her hands through her hair absently as she thought about what had happened. No matter what, the Moon Goddess had blessed her with a mate, and what a mate! She was beautiful and handsome all rolled into one. Ginny started to feel hot just thinking about her. She caught her train of thought and stopped. Was she seriously thinking about a woman like that?! But she couldn't help herself. She wished Leela had come back with her. Ginny finished in the shower and towelled off in a hurry. She threw on a loose football jersey and a pair of comfy boy shorts. Tomorrow was going to be a long day.
