"Are we sure that this is a good idea?" I asked. We were standing on the outskirts of the ancient vampire camp.
Although, looking at it, I wasn't sure why it was called a camp. It looked more like an ancient town, with buildings made out of old stone.
There was a large fountain in the middle of a clearing, it seemed to have a woman sculpture in it.
She stood with her head slightly bowed down to the water, her hands slightly outstretched on either side of her.
It was very pretty, almost magical looking.
"What is that?" I asked, unable to take my eyes off of the smoky blue marble like figure.
Jake leaned in, "Their Queen. Our Queen it's believed that she will return to rule the underworld in the future."
"She's beautiful. How will she return?" I asked, finding myself curious about it.
Even Riven seemed to pay more attention to what Jake was saying.
"She will be born from a powerful leader." He responded.
"That's amazing. I hope we will be around to see it happen." I said. I would have loved to be part of such a huge monument in vampire history.
Riven nudged me, "You will be. Immortal, remember?"
I chuckled and nodded. After years, I still found myself somehow forgetting that we were immortal. But that didn't mean I couldn't die. I thought back to the Shaman predicting my death, and suddenly my mood become sullen. I wasn't going to be around for much of any future events.
Sensing my train of thought, Jake put an arm around my shoulders and gave me an encouraging smile, "Let's go talk to the ancients."
I nodded with a tense smile. I highly doubted that speaking to an ancient vampire would save my life, but it may have helped stop Minnaloushe, and that was enough for me.
With Jake and Riven on either side of me, each clutching one of my hands, we made our way into the grounds.
The ground was dirt, and teamed with the stone buildings, it seemed more like an ancient town than anything else.
There even seemed to be an old well further behind the statue.
Now that I was closer, I could appreciate the beauty of the Queen more. She had luscious, long hair falling to her waist in slight waves, her lips were plump and her eyes... there was something about them that I couldn't put my figure on.
Whoever had sculpted her had done an amazing job capturing both her power and her beauty.
I was in awe as I stood before her, taking it all in.
"She's lovely, isn't she?" A male voice asked behind us. Of course, all three of us had heard him approaching. One of the perks of being a supernatural creature was the great hearing.
He walked around so we could see him, he had extremely long reddish hair tied and wrapped upon his head, and his bone structure was strong, with a good jaw line. His eyes were dark.
"Dimitar, it's good to see you." Jake spoke before bowing slightly, "I have brought my mate, Harley to meet with the clan."
Dimitar looked at me with curiosity, before turning his attention to Riven, "A wolf on clan grounds. That must be a first. Why are you here?"
Riven raised a brow, "I'm here to support my wife."
Dimitar turned to me with amusement, "You couldn't choose, so you decided to love them both?"
"Something like that."
"Why are you here, Harley?"
I squirmed, "Well, there's this witch I've been trying to kill. And I have the gift of sight, which I got from the Spirit Wolf when I became the Spirit Wolf. And I was told to see, well, someone, and Jake thinks it's you."
Dimitar didn't seem phased by my rambling, "A witch, you say?" His eyes dropped to the markings along my arms and a knowing look made it's way into his eyes, "She has infected you?"
I nodded, "Yes. And she's dangerous. We have to kill her."
"You should see Elisaveta, she is our Seer."
I frowned, "And she will be able to help me?"
"Perhaps. But we cannot help you without her insight." He explained.
"Then I'll see her." I could already feel a ball of worry forming in my stomach. I was worried she would forsee what the Shaman had. I couldn't risk Riven finding out that I was busy dying.
It would crush him.
Jake turned to Riven, "Elisaveta will not allow us in. You want a tour?"
I was relieved at Jake's words, and thankful for what he was doing.
Riven shrugged, "Sure. If it's safe for her to go alone."
Dimitar held out his arm for me and I hooked mine with his as we walked away.
"I know." He said.
"I don't understand." I kept my voice low, knowing that Riven had great hearing too.
"There is something you do not want the wolf to know. Something the King knows."
My steps faltered at his words, "Why would you think that?"
"Harley, please. I am over two thousand years old. Give me some credit."
We continued walking, and I was silent for some time, "Look, it's complicated, okay?"
"You're dying and you don't know how to deal with it." He said.
I stopped walking and pulled myself away from him, "How the hell could you possibly know that?"
"As I have said? I'm one of the ancients. I know many things," his eyes dropped to my arms, "It is not the first time that I am seeing such marks. I know the magic."
"So you must know how to stop it then?"
"Some things are not meant to be stopped, Harley. As unfortunate as it is, I have learned that in some instances, we cannot stop things, however cruel they may be."
"Are you telling me that I need to die?"
He looked away, "I know that it may seem unfair, but perhaps that is your destiny. But let's wait to hear what Elisaveta has to say."
That didn't seem very comforting at all.
