chapter 1
Esme’s POV
I heard a painfully sorrowful whimper and woke up startled, I looked around me, letting my eyes adjust to night vision, and I heard it again and realized it was coming from my husband sleeping next to me.
“Ben…Ben, wake up! What’s wrong! Wake up. It’s just a bad dream! BEN!”
And then big sweat drops started appearing on his forehead but at the same time his all body started trembling as if he was burning up with a fever and freezing cold at the same time. I try over and over to get him to wake up, but it’s useless. He’s in great pain. I can see it. I’m worried out of my mind I don’t know what to do… and then I hear it, it’s no more than a whisper, her name. I haven’t heard that name in almost two decades. “Bloom,” he repeats it, again and again, he keeps tossing and turning stuck in his nightmare, and her name keeps repeating on his lips, I’m at a loss, I mind link our Alpha, my big brother ~ Axel, please, come now. It’s Ben. He’s stuck in a Nightmare, and he keeps repeating her name~ ~I’m on my way~ but before Axel can get to us Ben’s eyes open and he shoots up, holding his chest with both hands over his heart I gasp and jump back a little, “she’s gone!” he whispered softly. He closes his eyes and I see a tear trickling down.
He didn’t need to explain any further, I understood, his mate had just died. I felt helpless. They weren’t together because of me; they had missed a lifetime of happiness, because of me. What had happened? Had she been attacked? She was much too young for her to have died of natural causes. Had she suffers? I felt guilt grip at my heart. Had they been together, he would have protected her. I whimper too. All I can do right now is hold him to me.
Moon Goddess, after all these years, their link still so strong. They could still feel each other!
I’d always felt extremely grateful to Ben for not leaving me after having found his mate. We had married young. He was about to become the new Beta. I had just been r***d and was with child and my father, his Alpha had begged him to marry me so that I wouldn’t have to come back to our pack disgraced.
Years later, he had met her. And just as fast, he had lost her. His first instinct had been to go look for her. But she was a Witch. Mixed marriages were frowned upon at the time, still are in most places, but people are slowly starting to become more tolerant. My brother is trying to make his pack more open-minded. Anyways, after their first night together, their only night together, she left forever, and Ben stayed with us.
Axel arrives, and shoots through our apartment aiming for our bedroom, opens the door and finds us sitting on the bed, Ben still grasping at his chest, me kneeling in front of him, with my arms around Ben rocking us. “She’s gone” I say and my brother sinks on the bed deflated, he too has lost a mate. He too knows how painful it is.
“Benjamin, you should go find her, see her one last time!” my brother suggests “No use, she’s gone” “Please, Ben, You must. Trust me. I beg you, don’t make me order it as your Alpha. But trust me as your brother, you need to see her one last time. It’ll help with the healing” Ben looked up at me, eyes glazed over and I simply nodded.
