Claire's POV
The next day I find myself free and unoccupied so I decided to visit the queen to see if I can help her with something.
I'm mostly going to visit so I can help reduce her workload. I still remember that incident in her office and I'm determined not to leave until she agrees to accept my help.
I knock on her office door and silence follows. I knock again before I hear some moving noises then the queen's voice.
She permits me to enter and I cautiously do so.
I walk over to Katherine at her desk who looks busy with some papers in front of her.
I wonder why it took her so long to call me in though.
"Good morning Katherine." I say and she looks up to me with a smile.
"Good morning dear. I see you are finally getting a hang on the formalities."
I smile at her statement before she gestures me to sit down.
"So to what do I owe this visit from you?" I nod then proceed to tell her why I'm here.
"I was hoping we can get back to our mentoring session." She creases her forehead at me.
"Ethan is recovering now and I want to get back to learning and helping you." She stares into vacuum totally not expecting this from me.
"I see what you mean. But there's more important stuff I still have to take care of on my own." I try not to crease my forehead.
What could she possibly be referring to?
"Can't I still help?" She stares at my determined face.
"Please don't take this in a wrong way but lately I can see how stressed you are, especially after Ethan's accident. I just want to help, after all it's my future responsibilities." She doesn't take it the wrong way and rather chuckles.
"Thank you Claire for being concerned. To clear the fog. I'm fine, I'm not stressed out at all." She speaks smiling and I would believe her if not for the sudden glimpse of a picture I spot on her table.
"Yes it's your future--" I zone out at this point to have a closer look at the picture but not making it too obvious.
"I'll be fine." She moves her hands onto the table and I quickly make eye contact.
She didn't catch me staring, thankfully.
"So what do I do in the meantime then?" I ask with a fake smile on my face.
Katherine holds her chin in deep thoughts and I try not to look at the picture again.
"How about the treasury." She speaks and my eyes widen a bit.
"You said you and Ethan planned on making the treasury more secure. So how about you handle that." I look at her surprised.
Wow she really doesn't want me around.
"You can take it as your first project as a queen." She smiles.
"Okay, that sounds great." I smile back at her.
"This will also give you more time at home with your mate." She adds with a mischievous smile and I titter.
"Thanks for hearing me out. I'll do my very best on this project." She nods at me before I excuse myself.
I walk out of the office totally uneasy.
She was staring at those bloody photos on her board again. It seems like she's doing something she doesn't want anyone to know.
I walk back into the room to find Ethan on the bed. This accident has really taken a toll on him, because the Ethan I know doesn't enjoy naps in the afternoon.
But who am I to object, sleep is just the best medicine. No doctor will ever tell you that.
I sit down on the bed and take off my shoes so I can join my mate without waking him up.
I slowly nestle myself beside him on the bed and sigh relieved that I didn't wake him.
I lie on my side and before I can blink Ethan has his arm around my waist and is cuddling me from behind.
"How did it go?" He whispers with his hot breath against my ear. I try not to shiver at the feeling.
"Good." I whisper back with my back facing him.
"She gave me a project." I add.
"Really?" His sleepy husky voice vibrates in my ear and I smile.
"Yeah, it's the treasury, she wants me to make it more secure, with the help of my company of course." At that I hear some movements from behind before Ethan redraws his hand on my waist and moves back.
I lie with my back down on the bed to see one elbow supporting his head and his intense gaze on me.
"What?" I look into his green mesmerizing eyes and he smiles.
"It's just that, maa doesn't really like it when big changes are made to the castle. It surprises me that she agreed to this project. Though it's the right thing to do." He says with a quizzical look on his face.
He's right though, I remember the first time I mentioned the lift and treasury modification to her. She didn't like the idea at first until she realized it's rather beneficial.
"Yeah, I realized." I reply thinking more of it.
"So when are you going to start. I would like to help." I look up at him smiling.
"Tomorrow, I'm going to make some phone calls, you can add yours." He smiles back at me.
I watch his gaze travel from my lips suddenly to my neck.
I look at him quizzicallly for a while before he suddenly comes to his senses and smiles again.
To my uttermost surprise he climbs out of bed and I sit up curious to know why.
"Let's go out for some fresh air." He smiles down at me.
"Now? I thought you were feeling sleepy?" I look at him surprised.
"Yeah, I'm more awake now, let's go for a walk." He says before rushing into the closet.
I look around perplexed.
"But we just returned from outside like an hour ago." I whisper to myself before climbing out of bed.
What is up with him too lately? I hope it's not a vampire thing he shares with his mother.
