Arthur's POV
I'm surprised when I'm summoned by my aunt to her office.
I presume she is finally going to sit me down and look me straight in the eyes before interrogating me to know if I had something to do with her son's assassination.
Everybody thinks I had something to do with it anyway so I guess it's about time she asked to satisfy her curiosities.
I find myself totally wrong now that I'm sitting in front of her, staring at the founder's egg on her desk.
"It's time for the egg to be hidden by the winners of the last founder's night. I heard Claire is on her way to see me, when she arrives you two can figure it out together." My gaze remains on the egg, not reaching my aunt's eyes.
A lot has been going on that I even forgot about this.
I was embarrassed at the last council meeting because my source wasn't accurate and current and now people are thinking I'm behind yet again one of Ethan's assassination attempt. Except this one nearly killed him.
I'm starting to think I need a break from all this royal drama. But at the thought of getting to spend some time with Claire puts my mind at ease a bit.
We hear a knock and aunt Katherine tells her to come in
The door opens and I realize something different about her even though I don't turn to look at her.
She doesn't walk in so I assume she's stuck at the entrance probably wondering why I'm here or if she's interrupting something.
"Come sit down." Aunt Katherine says and I hear her footsteps click on the floor before she takes her seat by me.
I see her stare at me through the corner of my eyes before looking at the queen.
"I hope I'm not interrupting something?" She asks Aunt Katherine who shakes her head.
"What's with the brown envelope." Aunt Katherine ask referring to the envelope on her lap.
"Well I was hoping to show you the progress of the project you gave me." She says with so much seriousness in her voice.
I sit in a way facing both her and my aunt whilst l try to figure out what's different about her today, besides the nice outfit she has on.
"Well you can leave it here with me, I'll check it later. Right now I need the both of you to finish what you started." Claire looks at her confused.
Suddenly she spots the egg on the table and she goes
"Oh."
Then she immediately goes.
"Oh." Again with a sad and disappointed tone to it.
I think she just realized she's going to have to spend some time with me again.
I try not to chuckle because for the first time in my life I'm excited about something, and it doesn't have to do with the throne or gaining power.
*
We walk out of my aunt's office and I stare at the egg in it's small fragile glass case in her hands.
"So where do we hid it." She asks also staring at the glass case.
I think about it for a while but nothing comes to mind.
"How about....we hide it previously where it was hidden then write a different complex poem." She suggests and I look down into her eyes.
I never knew brown is such an interesting color.
"Do you want to get rid of me already or want to set a record of our egg being found the quickest?" I ask with a cocky smile and the famous eye roll follows.
That was a smart suggestion but really not worthy of my thinking. If I'm going to hide this egg then I'll make sure it can't be found for a couple of decades.
"Then what do you suggest?" She asks flatly and I realize what I said might have hurt her.
"That was a nice suggestion, but I think after a while of searching it's previous hiding place will be so obvious. Besides it's not the first time something like that happened." I speak calmly and sincerely to her then walk away leaving her perplexed by my words and action.
We move downstairs together and I check the time. It's almost time for lunch.
I stare at the egg in her hands again when an insane suggestion pops up. A suggestion that will have them searching for decades.
"I have an idea." I smile at her.
I mind link the chamberlain to bring us a bag pack for the egg whilst a car and some security detail are being prepared.
The bag arrives and he bows at us before I retrieve it from the maid he brought along. They walk away and I hand the bag to Claire but she looks at it then looks up at me.
"What is it for?" She tilts her head a bit.
"It's for the egg." She creases her forehead more and takes the bag.
I watch her put the egg in the small bag pack cautiously before I nod.
"Let's go." I gesture towards the entrance and she looks at me.
"Arthur what are you up to? You haven't even told me your idea." She looks at me annoyed.
I really like the sound of my name on her lips.
"You'll see, when we get there." I walk away with a smile on my face and she follows.
We walk out to the two cars in front, one with security detail and the other which I'll be driving.
The keys are handed to me and the doors opened for us.
Claire just stands there staring at the cars. For the first time I roll my eyes, then walk over to her.
I grab her hand but she instantly pulls away at my touch.
I look down at my hand trying to savor what her skin felt like.
"Where are we going?" She asks in a serious tone and I suddenly realize why she is so hesitant.
I haven't told her where we are going? And for a minute there I forgot she doesn't really like or trust me after what happened with her mate
"We are going to the grave of Gwendolyn." I move back a bit to study her reaction.
"You want to hide the egg there?" I nod at her.
"Is that allowed?"
"This isn't the first time the egg wasn't hidden in the castle, it's totally normal." I answer and she nods.
"But why are we driving there? The royals are buried near this castle. There's a special building for their graves."
I see she's improving.
"Not Gwendolyn. She's one of the founders of Artea, her grave belongs to the public, along with some heroic figures." She nods at me.
"Okay." She says then moves to the car. She sits by the driver's seat and I follow.
I put in the keys then start the car as she makes a call.
The person doesn't pick so she calls again but then gives up on the third try.
I figured she wants to tell Ethan she's going out. Let's just hope she doesn't add that she's going out with me.
