Arthur's POV
I drive off into the day and I've finally figured out what's different about her today. I only figured it out now since she's so close and there's no air circulation except for the AC installed in the car.
She smells different, her scent is still there but there's another and I can't help but think of who it belongs to.
This shouldn't bother me. It's none of my business but I can't help but feel a bit jealous.
I don't know whether it's of my cousin having a mate or it's because of her in particular.
I grip on the steering wheel tightly for a little restrain.
She takes out her phone again and tries to call Ethan but he doesn't pick. Seriously where is that stupid cousin of mine and why isn't he answering?
If she were mine I would make sure to have my phone by me 24/7 waiting for her calls so I never miss a single one.
But then again she's not mine.
She sighs by me and I watch her type a message before her phone's battery dies.
"What did you text him?" I ask sparing a quick glance at her.
"Why should I tell you?" She creases her forehead at me.
"Because I'm hoping you didn't already give off the location of the egg for the next founder's night." I raise an eyebrow at her.
"I'm not stupid Arthur. I just texted that I'm with you."
"Well that's not good." I chuckle a bit and she looks at me confused.
"I know I wouldn't be happy with the idea of my mate with my dreadful cousin who is probably responsible for my latest assassination attempt." She raises an eyebrow at me but her expression doesn't read fear like I thought it would.
I guess she sensed that I was messing around.
"I'm just saying." I shrug and she looks away.
"I added that he may ask the queen for any additional info." She adds staring outside and I nod.
The rest of the drive is silent and soon we arrive at Gwendolyn's memorial site which is also her grave site.
The place is crowded like expected but we're not here to watch statues like the rest.
I park the car and we both alight.
Claire puts on the bag then stares at the famous statue of Gwendolyn. My little brat sister got her name from her. I don't know about her attitude though.
I stare at Claire and I see amazement dancing in her eyes.
"You haven't been here before? I thought you would have received a tour of Wolf city by now."
She shakes her head at me.
"It was a quick drive through, and this place is actually amazing." She turns to look around at the fountain and other statues with amazement.
She really strikes me as the kind of woman who finds pleasure in little things. It's a nice change to see in a woman, for me. I see why Ethan likes her so much.
The wind blows and she suddenly holds down her hair to cover her neck, something she has been doing since morning.
People start looking in our direction and I sense it's time to get going.
"We should head inside." I suggest and she nods before we walk into the grand building.
The guards form a perimeter around as as we walk through the building with artifacts, historical figures and others.
Claire looks around like an excited teenager and I can't help but chuckle.
"What's funny?" She stops looking around to stare at me.
"You." We both stop walking.
"I'm just remembering how scared you were to go out with me, now look at you." She blushes a bit and I can't help but stare.
Red is a good color on you. I think to myself and she looks up into my eyes.
I stare into them for a while before I shake my head and clear my throat.
"Let's get going."
"You didn't tell me we were coming here? How's that my fault?" She asks and I try not to chuckle.
"Well it's not my fault you don't trust me. I'm responsible for Ethan's assassination after all." I say much too serious and it looks like she believes me because she immediately stops smiling.
Her smile turns into hate.
I shouldn't have said it like that.
"Let's just keep going." I try not to show how disappointed I am.
We continue to walk in silence before the head of the memorial site approaches us.
"Your highness." She bows at us and I nod.
"I heard you're here to visit the late Queen Gwendolyn's grave." I nod at her.
"Yes, there's something I would like to do there, so please if you can have the place cleared." She nods at me.
"Of course your highness, please follow me." The old woman says and we follow her.
She leads us to a huge comfortable room with chairs and priceless ancient artifacts.
Claire walks off to explore the room and I stare at her.
Why do I feel disappointed that she thinks that way of me.
Everyone thinks I had something to do with Ethan's assassination attempt, but their opinions don't bother me.
All she had to do was frown and stay silent and I would be hurt and disappointed that she thinks that way of me.
"Gwendolyn's grave is being cleared, after that we'll hide the egg and be on our way." She nods not reaching my eyes.
I check the time to see it's lunch time before taking a seat. I throw my head back on the chair and close my eyes for a bit. I open them and sit straight to find her looking at me.
"Why are you staring at me?" I ask with a raised eyebrow.
"I'm trying to see if you look like a killer." She retorts taking me by surprised.
"And what's a killer supposed to look like?" I lean forward resting my elbows on my knees.
"Did you do it?" I raise an eyebrow at her then sit straight again.
"Do what?"
"Were you behind Ethan's assassination attempt?" Her eyes dance with curiosity.
"What do you think?" I decide to play around.
She moves closer and takes the seat in front of me.
"I don't know what to think. I want to hear it from you." I chuckle.
"What if you don't like the answer." She exhales hard.
"I guess a killer wouldn't tell anyone he's a killer." Her words make my blood boil so I stand up.
"I'm not a killer. I might hate Ethan for a lot of good reasons but I would never hurt family." I look her straight in the eyes and speak sincerely.
I can't believe I let that out.
I take in a deep breaths to calm my nerves.
"Why do you hate him?" She also stands and I tilt my head at her.
"Are you seriously asking me that question?" She nods and I chuckle.
"Because I don't think you really hate him." I look at her perplexed.
"Stephanie told me you guys were friends. Is it just hate that ruined your friendship?" I look at her closely, her words reminding me of what my father said.
"You can't be friends with him. He's your enemy. He'll take your throne and power, you should stop seeing him."
"I'm obsessed with making you king Arthur! That throne and power should not belong to that abomination!"
Obsessed with making me king. That's what he yelled at me when I lost the throne fair and square to Ethan.
To think of it, he gave me this obsession over the throne and it's power. I never wanted any of this, maybe just a small part but not all.
We hear a knock on the door before the old woman walks in.
"The grave has been cleared." I nod at her before turning to Claire.
"Let's go." I wall out first before she grabs the egg then follows.
My phone rings and I look at the caller with a raised eyebrow.
Why the hell is Ethan calling me? He has never called me before. I look at Claire who is looking somewhere else before it finally clicks.
I put my phone on vibration before putting it back into my pocket.
