Chapter 1: The Supporting Character
Three years following her husband Edward's disappearance, presumed dead, Luna finds herself navigating a world that has moved on without him. By the regulations for declaring a missing person deceased, she filed for divorce, thus dissolving their six-year marriage.
A few days later, Luna received a check for two hundred thousand yuan and encountered a profound dream. In this dream, she was originally a pampered heiress, later exposed as a false heiress. At the age of twenty, the true heiress returned, shattering her fragile existence.
To others, Luna was the epitome of unattainable beauty—a delicate vine dependent on the support of others for survival. Beyond her stunning visage, she possessed no notable talents. The genuine heiress, in contrast, boasted a brilliant intellect, striking beauty, a charismatic personality, and formidable abilities.
Once the truth emerged, Luna was cast out of her home. Her mother, already unstable and teetering on the edge of mental illness, could not accept the return of her beloved daughter to a world of privilege. Ultimately, her mother succumbed to madness.
Luna, having left college before completion, dedicated herself to work to cover her mother's medical expenses in a psychiatric facility. The opulent memories of high society faded like the mist they had become.
At the age of twenty-six, whilst working as a waitress in a five-star hotel, she crossed paths with Edward. Although he was not a wealthy scion but a diligent employee, he radiated warmth and kindness, treating her with utmost tenderness. In the end, Luna accepted his marriage proposal.
By twenty-eight, she gave birth to their daughter, Kiki. Their small family had its share of joyful moments, yet tragedy struck three years ago when Edward vanished while on a foreign business trip, never to return.
Desperate, Luna reported his disappearance and exhausted every avenue in search of him, but to no avail.
Later, his belongings were discovered along the shoreline, suggesting he may have drowned.
Now, three years later, Luna resolves to embrace a new beginning. Yet, that dream unveiled a different reality. She was merely a control group; anything the heroine possessed, she lacked.
In her dream, Edward was alive, having merely lost his memory, and had become a fervent admirer of the heroine abroad. He fell deeply in love with her. Eventually, the heroine assisted him in locating his wealthy father, which elevated him into the ranks of high society. As for his wife and child back home, they faded from his memory altogether.
The check she received served as a buyout of their shared past, originally two million but reduced to a mere two hundred thousand. In the grim narrative, Luna’s fate and Kiki's were tragic. Unable to provide for her daughter, Luna fell into decay and became the mistress of a balding, overweight man, while Kiki, having been raised with love, rebelled, ultimately eloping.
In despair and disappointment, Luna succumbed to the bottle, plunging from a high building, rendering her a mere shell of her former self. The old man maintained his care for a while but soon abandoned her, thus concluding her life.
Compared to the well-bred child born of the heroine, Luna and Kiki represented a stark contrast, a tragic extremity. Luna struggled to accept this reality, yet scenes from the story mirrored her own life experiences.
Awakening to the fact that she was the cruel supporting character was absurd—yet somehow fitting.
…………………………
Upon waking, Luna covered her mouth as tears streamed from her eyes.
“Mommy, Mommy!”
Kiki, only four years old, sensed her mother’s sorrow. Stirring awake, she nestled close to Luna, hoping to offer comfort with her tiny warmth.
Luna embraced her child tightly.
Her little treasure already knew how to return love to her mother. How could Kiki ever rebel against her? How could she ever run away to a distant place? For a mother, fierce endurance was necessary.
A glimmer of resolve flickered in Luna’s eyes; she would not allow their fate to be so harrowing!
“Mommy, it’s almost time! We need to get to kindergarten!” Kiki was enrolled in a private institution.
With Edward unable to establish his identity in S City before his disappearance, Luna had devoted herself entirely to raising their daughter, unable to work. Lacking access to public kindergarten, and unwilling to let Kiki stray too far due to safety concerns, she opted for a nearby option.
Kiki's tuition soared to forty thousand a year. Thankfully, they had no mortgage or car loan. The home they inhabited was fully paid for, registered in Luna's name, a purchase made before their marriage— a symbol of stability that Edward had provided.
Yet, not even a short while had passed before everything changed drastically.
“Alright, I’m coming, dear,” Luna replied, wiping her hands before grabbing Kiki’s small backpack, guiding her towards the kindergarten.
Throughout their walk, neighbours greeted her warmly. Although she wouldn’t admit it, everyone knew she had become a widow. What else could she be if her husband was dead?
Whispers circulated frequently among the community regarding widows.
Luna, especially, became the topic of many conversations.
Her beauty was striking. Despite having given birth, her genes had restored her appearance to its former glory. Kiki, inheriting both her and Edward's genes, was exceedingly adorable, her large, bright eyes reminiscent of glistening grapes.
After bidding Kiki farewell, Luna watched as her daughter entered the kindergarten. Just as she prepared to leave, a familiar voice called out to her.
“Luna.”
At the sound of that voice, a tremor ran through her. She turned to face a tall, handsome man; it took her a moment to muster a faint smile.
“It’s been a long time, Sam.”
It had probably been over a decade since they last met. Leaving that world behind at twenty, she now found herself at thirty-two, unexpectedly encountering an old acquaintance.
Sam belonged to the elite circle and was among the suitors vying for the heroine's affection. During her dream, she had reached the story's c****x, where multiple potential male leads had been suggested, yet the heroine’s choice remained uncertain.
Now, how serendipitous it was to meet Sam today.
Years had passed, yet Sam retained his handsome features, with sharply defined facial contours and eyes reminiscent of icy pools that sent a chill down her spine.
With no shared experiences for over a decade… Luna inhaled deeply, managing to smile at Sam. “Are you here to drop off a child?”
Sam's gaze pierced through her, recognizing her discomfort. Slowly, he responded, “And you?”
Luna flinched; she wasn’t adept at lying. Sam had just seen Kiki— she was merely delivering a friend’s child by chance. Surely, they wouldn’t intersect again.
“I’m here to drop off my daughter,” she replied, offering a forced smile.
Sam finally dared to look at her fully. “Are you married?”
