TWENTY TWO

They hopped in the car; Logan hit the gas as they peeled out of the driveway. Gravel flung projectiles all over the road as they speeded away. The boys could be heard cheering as they slid across the road as they made a sharp turn. They blared music and consumed as much junk food as they could. They laughed and made jokes like they were 16 again. The first 3 hours of the trip were amazing. Her brother felt better than he’d felt in years. He had missed his best friend so much and he’d had his sister back. He felt complete. After a while, Gabriel fell quiet. “Wolf trouble? He asked. “No, my wolf's fine. Excited actually” he said quietly. “Come on bro, tell me what’s going on? You’re acting like when you had a crush on Vicky Lamont in grade school” he joked but Gabriel was quiet. “Bro, talk to me” he yelled. “I’m the worst best friend in the world,” he said sadly. “Dude the wolf thing is not your fault,” he said as he hit him in the arm. Gabriel took a deep breath, “I think I’m falling in love with your sister” he blurted out. Her brother's knuckles went white around the steering wheel and his face was bright red. Gabriel waited for him to beat the crap out of him. He deserved it. Then all he heard was laughter. A deep belly laughs. “Dude, I’m not joking man,” he said with his eyes on the ground. “Really dude?” He said but all he could do was nod. He was waiting for his best friend to blow a gasket, but he just laughed. Finally, Gabriel looked at him. “Dude, I kinda knew something was up when you didn’t eat her the second, she went in with you,” he said as Gabriel shrugs in agreement. “I knew when your wolf was snuggling with her sweatshirt”. He said matter of factly. “On a scale of one to ten how mad are you? Because I didn’t mean this to happen,” Gabriel said. His friend chuckles, “obviously, my sister barged into your cell” he laughed, and Gabriel shrugged in agreement. “You tried to push her out of the cell, but she went nuts. So, this isn’t your fault”. Gabriel agreed. “Your sister is more stubborn than you, man!” And he agreed. “Scale 1-10?” He said playfully putting his hands in the air. “0” he admitted. “You’ve matured my friend” he joked. They both bust out laughing. “Seriously, you get her better than I do. At least it’s you and not Taylor” they both laugh and cringe. “What’s in that journal?” Her brother asks. Gabriel’s quiet for a few minutes, looking out the window. He recalls some of the awful things she went through. “Bad s**t, bad s**t dude,” he says and grows quietly. “Like?” Trying to get more information. “Leave it be dude. She’ll tell you what she wants when she ready...if she’s ever ready,” he says sadly. He looks back out the window watching the scenery pass him by. The trip is quiet and awkward for a long while. Gabriel clears his throat, opens his mouth but nothing comes out. Her brother waits and waits, growing impatient waiting. Finally, “you need to be careful around her. I know an act first think later guy but you need to check yourself around her. She’s been through a lot, you’ve gotta keep your temper in check,” Gabriel says. “I’m not gonna hurt my sister,” he says annoyed. “That’s not what I meant dude; her stepfather was awful will say for now. Awful to her. She needs you at your best”. Gabriel mentions. “That dude beat her with a cane right in front of me breaking her arm. If she wasn’t a wolf...”. He trailed off about to cry. “I love you man and I’m not gonna tell you the things I read but that was a good day for her,” he said with tears in his eyes. “A good day, seriously, it was one of the worst days of my life” he whined. “Shut up dude” Gabriel growled. “Gabriel... what the f**k happened to my sister”. He slams the breaks of the car. “You need to tell me now” he yells. Gabriel groans. “Her stepfather did things to her that no one, I mean no one should have to go through especially not your sister” he yelled. “That’s all I’m saying dude, that’s it” he growled. “Did she have good days?” he asked. “Don’t ask questions you don’t want answers to” Gabriel remarked. “I’ll take that as a no” as he rips the windshield wiper control out of the steering column. “My mom, what happened to her?” asked her brother. “Not much, she lost her wolf, but she didn’t care. She let it all happen,” Gabriel said with anger in his eyes. “What?” Screamed her brother. “I love you as my brother but if I ever see your mother, I’m going to f*****g kill her. I’m sorry but she is an awful human being once she met the stepfather” roared Gabriel. “She let him hurt my sister,” asked her brother. “Let, she helped, and she let him do things...” Gabriel stopped. “What?” He begged. “We gotta stop, my wolf about to bust out and go on a killing spree”. At this moment, he knew the conversation was over. Gabriel was finally back, and he didn’t want to lose him. He knew he couldn’t change the past, but he could be there for her now. “Your sure she’s not in heat?” Asking a bit discouraged. “My wolf is sure. It’s fine dude, I won’t touch her even if she is”. Gabriel said. “What if she begs?” Jokingly Logan said. Gabriel forgot got a moment it was his best friend's sister they were talking about. “She already did dude, but I refused,” he said feeling proud till he said that about his best friend's sister. “It wasn’t like that man, she was scared. I wasn’t like that. She didn’t want...” Gabriel stopped talking. He’d already put his foot in his mouth. “She didn’t want?” Logan kept repeating. He wasn’t gonna stop till he answered. “She didn’t want some random stranger to have his way with her. They were all at the cell trying to get to her. I wasn’t gonna let them touch her, but she was scared”. Gabriel said reassuringly. “So, Bret wasn’t kidding about the unmated wolves at your cell,” he asked. “No, it was insane. They were like zombies dude”. He tried to make light of it. “And you didn’t do what she -begged?” He asked angered. “No dude absolutely not! I was picking off lust zombies and I wouldn’t of anyway. Not like that, even my wolf wasn’t interested. He was focused on killing the horny assholes. Um, dude, Brett was there though. He was in gunning for your sister hard” Gabriel said. “Brett? Who else?” He asked sternly “literally every unmated male wolf even f*****g Taylor was like a list zombie,” he said cringing. “Taylor, touching my sister. I’m going to vomit” he cringed harder. They were silent for a few minutes “you know 20 unmated wolves rushed to the dungeon. We killed them all, but they were hell-bent on getting in” he said. “I heard dude, but I was busy” Gabriel Said and her brother shrugged in agreement. “She was supposed to have 3 weeks before it hit. She had been tracking it in her journal. It wasn’t her fault, she tried to leave but it was too late” Gabriel said. “3 weeks early, you probably did it” he joked. “Me? I was locked in a cell” he joked. “She liked you” her brother admitted. “She never been cuddly or warm, but she melts when she’s near you. And her smile when she looks at you. Even when you're a beast, it’s no different” her brother said. “I swear I didn’t do anything except not eat her” throwing his hands up in surrender “it’s ok dude, I want her to be happy. You make her happy,” he said sincerely. “Do you think her heat will stay on track now?” He asked. “I have no idea, I hope so. I can’t handle the zombies” he joked. Her brother took a deep breath and exhaled for a long time “if it happens again and she wants you to and you want to, I want you to do it” he said in one breath as fast as he could. “Did you just give me permission to sleep with your sister dude?” Gabriel asked shocked. Neither one of them could believe what he said. “Jesus Christ, I just did. I just permitted you to bed, my sister. My life is f*****g insane right now” he laughed like he was losing it. “Relax dude, it’s all gonna work out”. Gabriel tried to comfort him. her brother started the car again and started driving. “So, what little she-wolf is making you run in circles right now?” Gabriel said lightening the mood. “Sabrina Michael’s,” he said as he lifted an eyebrow. “Seriously? She was the dumbest box of rocks” Gabriel joked. “Her boobs are massive, and they bounce so nicely when I tuck her” he laughed. Gabriel busted out laughing. “Your awful” he laughed. “You better not ever say that about my sister” he growled. Gabriel’s laugh was gone, “I don’t kiss and tell,” he said playfully. Her brother rolls his eyes, “this is so weird”. He admits. “Yea doesn’t be joking around about s*x with your sister. don’t talk about s*x at all”. Gabriel admits. “Is she a—- virgin?” He asked. “Dude, stop” Gabriel was annoyed. “I’m just asking if my sister has been deflowered so I can kill the guy,” he said jokingly. He was only playing around, let kidding but Gabriel was losing it. “It wasn’t by her choice, stop now” he growled rocking the car. “Wait. She was r***d?” Almost in tears. “Please let it go, dude, it’s all bad. I can’t. I’m gonna lose it. I’ll never hurt your sister.” He said as he broke into tears. Her brother desperately wanted to push him, but he knew he couldn’t. Whatever it was it was so bad that Gabriel couldn't handle thinking about it. If he couldn’t, I couldn’t. I was filled with guilt. Can we fix her?” He asked sincerely. “My wolf and I have an idea but she’s not gonna like it,” he said wiping the tears from his eyes. “What won’t she like?” He asked. “First I got to get those tortures bracelets off,” he said annoyed. “She is not going to go for it. Plus is that such a great idea? She-“Gabriel rudely interrupted. “I know what she does!” He growled. “She’s never gonna get better with those bracelets on,” he said. Her brother agreed. “How are you going to get those bracelets off her? When she sleeps?” He questioned. “I was gonna ask her to trust me and take them off,” he said proudly. “That’s very mature. If she doesn’t agree?” He asked. Gabriel laughed “when she’s asleep, I’m gonna rip them off” they both bust out in laughter. “Maybe not that mature” he chuckled. It was dark outside; they rode on a gravel road for a while. “End of the line, we gotta walk” he said. They hoped up and started walking up the path “I don’t even know how she found this place” her brother said. “Fear, she found it out of fear” Gabriel said dead serious.
