A CHILDHOOD NIGHTMARE
Liz greeted the policeman who was parked by the kerb in front of her apartment the next afternoon, keeping watch as she stepped into her building. Surveillance had been on for a while, then off, and now it was back on, as per Marco’s instructions.
Not long after she entered her home, a policeman rang her mobile phone, asking about a visitor. It was Gabriella, so she explained that it was fine to let her into the apartment and met her outside.
Gabriella wore dark glasses and a scarf around her neck, in spite of the warm air. “Hi Liz. Sorry to bother you at home, but I have to speak to you about something.”
“Is everything okay? And why are you wearing glasses? I can’t see your eyes.”
She hesitated. “I’ll explain everything once we get inside.”
