MYSTERY CALL
Several days later, Matthew was in the firefighter’s gym as he pondered their recent call-out. He had recently returned with other firefighters from a rescue of a victim in a cardiac arrest. They had managed the unconscious and non-breathing victim to provide life-saving emergency care until the ambulance arrived. Luckily, they had started the man’s heart again and kept him stable until the ambulance officers walked inside the door. It was a close call, but necessary, as waiting even a few seconds was the difference between life and death. Early CPR was crucial if they were the closest in the vicinity and the first to respond on a call-out.
