CHAPTER 33 OFFER OF HELP Liz winced at the ache in her wrist as she rose from the hospital bed, taking a deep breath. She thought about her client Anne, who had stabbed herself in the bathroom, and had asked a nurse earlier about Anne’s ward number. She made her way over there and ignored her aches and pains. She was only a few minutes away from her room, and once she entered her ward, the poor woman stared up at a television screen, her arm bandaged and her eyes blood-shot. The look of sheer despair flashed across Anne’s face. She jolted in her bed when spotting Liz. “I’m sorry, Anne. I didn’t mean to scare you. I wanted to check in. I guess you remember me from the centre. I’m Liz.” Marie hugged the blankets tight against her chest, nodding. “Can I sit?” Anne shrugged. “Free country.
