Chapter 60
Jess reopened the video connection to Clay, Zeek, and Captain North. No one spoke for some time. Finally Captain North broke the silence, his voice even gruffer than normal.
“She died bravely. I don’t think anyone can be said to die well when they are so young, but she died bravely. While we were losing our heads she stayed cool, identified the danger to the Wanderer and took it out. If we succeed, if Jess and the Wanderer succeed, then we must make sure her sacrifice is not forgotten.”
Jess nodded, not trusting himself to speak. He was struggling with the thought Nova’s death was his fault, both because she had done it to save the Wanderer and because he’d created the circumstances which led to the destroyer getting the drop on him.
