Sal could feel the tension as the Dark Shadow dropped out of jump space, not just around the bridge of her ship but also through the fleet as a whole. Every member of the fleet knew something unknown, something dangerous, awaited them.
Most of the fleet had no real idea where that feeling came from. They thought of the Gift as something which bound them all together, gave them common purpose, but they had no idea that it was so much more.
Unity kept them ignorant of its existence precisely because it cared for them so much. It couldn’t possibly communicate with each and every one of the Gifted, and knowing Unity existed but being unable to fully join with its presence could cause disharmony and disruption.
